Tapia Syndrome and Severe Pain Induced by Occipital Bone Metastasis of Prostate Cancer.

Tapia syndrome is characterized by unilateral tongue paralysis, hoarseness, and dysphagia. It is often associated with issues in the lower cranial nerves and is rarely caused by malignant tumors. A 71-year-old Japanese male with prostate cancer and bone metastases experienced severe headaches, oral discomfort, dysphagia, and hoarseness for a month. Neurological examination revealed left-sided tongue atrophy and left vocal cord paralysis, suggesting problems with cranial nerves IX and XII. CT scans showed bone metastasis in the left occipital bone. Brain MRI showed no brain or meningeal metasta

Monostotic fibrous dysplasia involving occipital bone: a case report and review of literature.

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a progressive systemic bone tumour of young and it can be seen on cranial bones. FD is divided into three types according to radiological features. The second most common subtype is polyostotic subtype. With this article, we aimed to review and present clinical features, radiological examination, differential diagnosis and treatment management of a case of solitary monostotic fibrous dysplasia of occipital bone. 15 years old female patient admitted to our hospital for a bump and in the back of his head that she noticed 1 month ago. Her physical and neurological examin

[Fibrous dysplasia involving sphenoid and occipital bone: one case report and literature review].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinical manifestation, radiograph features, pathology, diagnosis and treatment of fibrous dysplasia in cranial bone. METHOD: A case of fibrous dysplasia involving sphenoid and occipital is reported and literature were reviewed. RESULT: The most common complaint were headache, proptosis, diplopia, or visual changes. Distinguishing features of fibrous dysplasia on CT include "ground-glass" appearance, bone fiber anisotrophy, aneurysmal bone cyst formation and thickness of the cranial cortices. Fibrous dysplasia could be exactly diagnosed by pathology. Computed tomograp

Congenital cholesteatoma of occipital bone or intradiploic epidermoid cyst? One and the same disease.

OBJECTIVE: We report an extremely rare case of congenital cholesteatoma affecting the occipital bone. METHODS: We present a case report, plus a review of the world literature on similar lesions. RESULTS: This case report describes the presentation and treatment of a congenital cholesteatoma arising in an apparently unique location within the occipital bone, with no effect on middle-ear structure or function. The different imaging characteristics of this lesion are described and illustrated. The discussion centres on the differentiation of this lesion from intradiploic epidermoid cysts, more

A huge occipital osteoblastoma accompanied with aneurysmal bone cyst in the posterior cranial fossa.

Osteoblastoma is an infrequent benign tumor and skull involvement is extremely rare. The occipital bone is much less frequently involved. We report an unusual case of a huge occipital osteoblastoma with aneurysmal bone cyst in the posterior cranial fossa of a 20-year-old young man. MRI scan and CT three-dimensional reconstruction revealed that the tumor (approximately 8.5 cm x 6 cm x 5 cm) occupied nearly half volume of the posterior cranial fossa. The cerebellum, the forth ventricle and brain stem were compressed remarkably and hydrocephalus was noted. The tumor mass was multiloculated cystic

Pedicled, vascularized occipital bone graft to supplement atlantoaxial arthrodesis for the treatment of pseudoarthrosis.

Atlantoaxial pseudoarthrosis is a challenging postoperative complication. The use of a local, vascularized bone graft, without free tissue transfer, to support a revision atlantoaxial fusion has not been previously described. We report the first surgical patient who received a semispinalis capitis muscle pedicled, occipital bone graft for supplementation of a revision atlantoaxial arthrodesis. A 72-year-old female had a failed atlantoaxial fusion and developed neck pain from continued instability and fractured hardware. The fixation and fusion were revised and supplemented with a novel, pedicl

The mendosal suture of the occipital bone: occurrence in Indian population, embryology and clinical significance.

The occipital bone is ontogenetically and functionally unique when compared to the other bones of the skull in humans and other mammalian cousins. The occipital bone develops from six ossification centers; any defect in the ossification process will give rise to mendosal suture (accessory suture) and conditions like posterior plagiocephaly. There is a paucity of literature regarding the mendosal suture and further more, its report in Indian population is not known. The present study was conducted to find out the occurrence of mendosal suture in the Indian dry skulls. Fifteen specimens (3%) wer

Intraosseous Arteriovenous Fistula Around the Anterior Condylar Confluence as an Occipital Bone Fracture Sequela.

BACKGROUND: Although traumatic dural arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a rare condition, dural injury associated with skull fracture is one of the major factors for the formation of dural AVF at the skull fracture area. We report a case of de novo intraosseous AVF around the anterior condylar confluence after head injury associated with skull base fracture. CASE DESCRIPTION: A woman in her 70s presented with pulsatile tinnitus 3 months after cerebellar infarction and occipital bone fracture. The appearance of de novo intraosseous AVF was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic reson

Concurrent occipital bone malformation and atlantoaxial subluxation in a neonatal harbor seal (Phoca vitulina).

A stranded male harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) neonate with progressive clinical signs of ataxia, tremors, and deteriorating consciousness was evaluated using magnetic resonance imaging for suspected cerebellar brain disease prior to euthanasia because of grave prognosis. Magnetic resonance imaging identified occipital bone dysplasia with cerebellar herniation and concurrent atlantoaxial subluxation with spinal cord compression. These imaging findings elucidated the cause of histopathology changes including gliosis of the cerebellum and axonal degeneration and dilation of myelin sheaths of the d

Inheritance of occipital bone hypoplasia (Chiari type I malformation) in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

Occipital bone hypoplasia with foramen magnum obstruction and secondary syringomyelia (SM) is a common condition in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKCS) that is similar to human Chiari type I malformation. A worldwide family tree of more than 5,500 CKCSs spanning a maximum of 24 generations was established by obtaining pedigree information from 120 dogs diagnosed with SM secondary to occipital bone hypoplasia. The ongoing study showed 6 of 8 great grandparents of all affected dogs could be traced back to 2 female ancestors so that all 8 were descended from one or the other or both. The dis

Complete resection of a giant epidermoid cyst of the occipital bone: case report and systematic review.

Epidermoid cysts are uncommon accounting for less than 1% of all intracranial tumors. Among them, giant intradiploic epidermoid cysts of the posterior fossa i.e. those exceeding 5 cm are an even rarer entity. Here we report on the complete resection of a 7 cm posterior fossa epidermoid cyst involving the occipital bone in a 32-year-old female presenting with an acute on chronic exacerbation of headaches and vertigo. Complete resection including the cyst wall is crucial in preventing recurrence and malignant transformation. We add to limited existing data by reporting on the first systematic re

Occipital bone and tumor-induced osteomalacia: a rare tumor site for an uncommon paraneoplastic syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is an uncommon paraneoplastic syndrome due to the overproduction of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). It is predominantly caused by mesenchymal tumors and cured upon their complete removal. Non-surgical treatment is an alternative option but limited to specific clinical conditions. METHODS: We report a challenging case of TIO caused by a tumor involving the occipital bone. We also performed a literature review of TIO caused by tumors localized at this site, focusing on clinical findings, treatment, and outcomes. RESULTS: The patient, a 62-yea

Three-dimensional reconstruction of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy involving the occipital bone and dura.

A rare case of melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy involving the right occipital bone in an 11-month-old infant is described. The bone tumor and its dural extension were surgically removed. Three-dimensional reconstruction of the tumor and brain from neuroimaging data added worthwhile information for preoperative planning. Microscopic examination revealed melanotic and neuroblastic tissue in a fibrillary matrix involving the expanded bone and superficial dura. A focal osteoblastic cranial mass in an infant should alert the clinician to consider this tumor.

Intracranial birth trauma in vaginal breech delivery: the continued importance of injury to the occipital bone.

Between 1966 and 1976, postmortem examinations revealed significant intracranial birth trauma in 17 infants delivered breech first and in ten infants delivered head first; separation of the squamous and lateral parts of the occipital bone (occipital osteodiastasis) was found in five of the infants who died after breech delivery. The finding of the lesions in these infants is attributed to the adoption, since 1971, of a postmortem technique involving dissection of the suboccipital region before opening the skull. Review of earlier necropsy reports suggests that the lesion was sometimes missed.

Giant Intradiploic Epidermoid Cyst of the Occipital Bone with Posterior Fossa Compression: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Intradiploic epidermoid cysts are rare lesions that account for a small fraction of intracranial tumors with occasional malignant transformation. Occipital involvement is particularly uncommon, and lesions may reach giant dimensions with a risk fossa compression. CASE PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old woman presented with a 12-month history of progressive headache and vertigo. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a large, diffusion-restricting extra-axial mass arising from the occipital bone and extending into the posterior fossa. She underwent a posterior fossa craniotomy with gro

Meningoencephalocele and supernumerary ectopic limb arising from the occipital bone in a Jacob sheep lamb.

This report describes the clinical, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging findings for a Jacob sheep lamb diagnosed with meningoencephalocele and supernumerary ectopic limb. Key clinical message: This case demonstrates the utility of tomographic imaging in diagnosing congenital malformations in sheep and can be used to assess the extent of the lesion. This may help to determine any viable treatment, or, as in the case presented here, determine that the extent of the lesion precludes surgical intervention.

Occipitocervical fixation using occipital bone hooks and cervical lateral mass screws: analysis of 16 cases.

AIM: We present a series of 16 patients who underwent occipitocervical fixation with occipital bone hooks used as a substitute for occipital screws for the treatment of occipitocervical instability. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this technique; instrumentation was started following the decompression with insertion of screws into lateral masses. At the occipital level, two symmetrical burr holes were drilled and two occipital bone hooks were inserted into each burr hole with an inverted position with respect to each other. Afterwards, rod-plates were placed and locked on the hooks and screw heads.

A case of falx cerebelli dural arteriovenous fistula with perimedullary venous reflux after occipital bone fracture.

Intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (dAVFs) with perimedullary venous reflux are uncommon but can lead to progressive myelopathy. Although most dAVFs are idiopathic or associated with dural sinus thrombosis, a falx cerebelli dAVF developing after an occipital bone fracture is exceedingly rare and clinically important. We report a 77-year-old patient who presented with 1 month of progressive bilateral lower-extremity weakness, urinary retention, and hiccups, 1 year after an occipital bone fracture. Magnetic resonance imaging showed longitudinal T2-weighted imaging hyperintensity from the
