Finite element analysis of occlusal splint therapy in patients with bruxism.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism is among the habits considered generally as contributory factors for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and its etiology is still controversial. METHODS: Three-dimensional models of maxilla and mandible and teeth of 37 patients and 36 control subjects were created using in-vivo image data. The maximum values of stress and deformation were calculated in 21 patients six months after using a splint and compared with those in the initial conditions. RESULTS: The maximum stresses in the jaw bone and head of mandible were respectively 4.4 and 4.1 times higher in patients t

A Simplified Way for the Stabilization of Pediatric Mandibular Fracture With an Occlusal Splint.

The management of pediatric mandibular fractures is challenging for maxillofacial surgeons due to ongoing mandibular growth involving tooth buds. The treatment of such fractures has been a topic of much research. Generally accepted methods for the treatment of mandibular parasymphyseal or symphyseal fractures in children are conservative approaches involving the use of acrylic splints, lateral compression with an open-cap splint stabilized by circummandibular wiring, and maxillomandibular fixation with an arch bar and eyelet wiring. The aim of this technical note was to describe a straightforw

A modified occlusal splint to avoid tracheotomy for total midface osteotomies.

A modified occlusal splint is described which may be used to avoid tracheostomy when a total midface osteotomy is required. We demonstrate the accuracy of the modified splint by using the technique in a control subject who underwent alginate impressions, dental casts, and a face-bow transfer. A modified splint was constructed on the articulated dental models and was found to be accurate within the range of rotational movement of the temporomandibular joint. The technique is demonstrated in a patient with Crouzon's syndrome undergoing cranial vault reshaping and a monobloc (midface) advancement

The use of PEEK as an occlusal splint in a patient with histaminosis: A case report.

Poly-(etheretherketone) (PEEK) began to be used in the field of odontology more than 10 years ago, especially in relation to the creation of removable partial dentures. Here we report the case of a 62 years old woman diagnosed with histamine intolerance (or histaminosis), who presented a very particular set of oral symptoms. She described a certain tingling, burning, and swelling of the mucous membranes. These symptoms seem to be linked with the wearing of a resin occlusal splint which was initially prescribed to compensate for the absence of a meniscus in the left temporomandibular joint of t

[Present situation and future of occlusal splint in treatment of oral diseases].

Occlusal splint is a removable device for the treatment of oral and maxillary diseases with reversible occlusal treatment property. When patients wear the occlusal splint, the occlusal contact state can be changed and the position of the lower jaw may be adjusted, with the improvement of functions of temporomandibular joints and masticatory muscles. There are various types of occlusal splints, among which stabilization splint, soft occlusal splint and repositioning splint are widely used in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders and night bruxism. For the patients requiring occlusal reco

GABA and glutamate levels in occlusal splint-wearing males with possible bruxism.

OBJECTIVE: The inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) plays an important role in the pathophysiology of anxiety behavioural disorders such as panic disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder and is also implicated in the manifestation of tooth-grinding and clenching behaviours generally known as bruxism. In order to test whether the stress-related behaviours of tooth-grinding and clenching share similar underlying mechanisms involving GABA and other metabolites as do anxiety-related behavioural disorders, we performed a Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) study for accurate,

Behavioral Dentistry in the Digital Age: A Review of Biofeedback Occlusal Splint Therapy.

Occlusal splints have long been employed as conservative therapeutic devices in the management of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), bruxism, and occlusal dysfunctions. Traditionally fabricated from hard acrylic, these splints function primarily through passive mechanical protection and require consistent patient compliance for effectiveness. This review outlines the evolution of occlusal splint therapy, with an emphasis on recent advancements in digital fabrication and biofeedback integration, and evaluates their clinical relevance in improving treatment outcomes. It begins by summarizing co
