Prevalence of Rift Valley fever immunoglobulin G antibody in various occupational groups before the 2007 outbreak in Tanzania.

A cross-sectional sero survey of 199 apparently healthy persons from various occupations was carried out in Tanga, Tanzania in November 2004 to investigate exposure to Rift Valley fever (RVF) virus. Sera were tested for the presence of antibodies to RVF virus by the inhibition enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detecting immunoglobulin G (IgG). All reactive sera were further tested by the capture ELISA test and specific RVF immunoglobulin M (IgM) assay. Eight (4.0%) tested positive for IgG and none of the samples tested positive for IgM. Among the occupational groups examined, the s

Sexual risk taking, sexually transmitted infections and HIV prevalence among four "high-risk" occupational groups of Indonesian men.

OBJECTIVES: This article reports new surveillance data on the prevalence of sexual risk taking, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI) among four occupational groups of Indonesian men thought to be at elevated risk of infection. METHODS: Behavioural survey data were collected from 3008 men in 11 cities, among whom 2158 men were tested for HIV and syphilis and 1950 for gonorrhoea and chlamydia. Risk factors for STI were assessed using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: Thirty-six per cent of men had sex with a female sex worker (FSW) in the previous year and 20% with non

Risk of pancreatic cancer and occupational exposures in Spain. PANKRAS II Study Group.

The objective of the study was to analyse the relationship between occupational exposures and risk of pancreatic cancer. Incident cases of pancreatic cancer and hospital controls were prospectively identified and interviewed during the hospital stay. Occupational history was obtained by direct interview with the patient, and was available for 164 (89%) of 185 pancreatic cancer cases, and 238 (90%) of 264 controls. Two industrial hygienists evaluated exposures to 22 suspected carcinogens previously associated with pancreatic cancer. Occupational exposures were also assessed using the Finnish jo

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: The burden of illness and economic losses due to upper-limb work-related musculoskeletal disorders (UL-WMSDs) is high; thus, they have become a major global public health problem. At present, the epidemiological characteristics of UL-WMSDs in China's occupational population are still unknown. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: The incidence of UL-WMSDs among key occupational groups in China is 22.5%, with distinct occupational characteristics. WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTICE?: This study has primarily determined the occurrence and pot

Longitudinal Mental Health Effects of the 2016 Terrorist Attack in Berlin on Various Occupational Groups of Emergency Service Personnel.

Emergency service personnel who respond to terrorist attacks may experience persistent stress following the event. This occupational stress must be examined in order to develop occupation-specific response preparation and follow-up measures. An explorative pilot study examined the occupational stress-related effects of the 2016 terrorist attack on Breitscheidplatz in Berlin on emergency service personnel. The present study examines whether the results of the pilot study can be replicated and whether the effects changed after 2 years. The participants were 60 emergency personnel (including 11 p

Subjects indicated on a blank body manikin any low back, shoulder, wrist or forearm or both, or knee pain which had occurred during the past month and had lasted more than 1 day. Mortality risks in Australian men by occupational groups, 1968-1978: variations associated with differences in drinking and smoking habits.

Analysis of patterns of male mortality in Australia during 1968-1978 shows elevated death rates from liver cirrhosis, alcoholism and alcoholic psychosis in various rural, service, and "blue-collar" occupations. The risks of mortality from lung cancer and cancers of the upper alimentary tract and larynx--sites influenced by alcohol and tobacco consumption--are raised in the latter two groups. In contrast, the risks of mortality from cancer of the colon, thought to be influenced by dietary "affluence", are consistently higher for professional and "white-collar" groups. As reported in other popul

[Skin diseases and working disability in the Netherlands. II. Catamnestic study in 3 groups of patients with occupational contact eczema].

A follow-up study was performed of the medical and social condition of 164 patients with an occupational allergic contact dermatitis. A change of work did not always lead to an improvement of the dermatitis. A number of patients improved without changing their job. It is suggested that a change of occupation can only be advised to these patients if the causal allergen can be avoided completely by doing so and only by doing so; at the same time one must reckon with other aetiologic factors and the social situation after change of work. Moreover it is pointed out that patients who changed their

Epidemiologic features of Schistosoma japonicum among fishermen and other occupational groups in the Dongting Lake region (Hunan Province) of China.

In this study we examined 1,909 individuals (53% males and 47% females) to determine the current status of Schistosoma japonicum among the people in five fishing villages situated on two islands (large, Qingshan island; small, Niangashan island) in the Dongting Lake region in Hunan Province, the People's Republic of China. The results of this study indicate that the overall prevalence for schistosomiasis on the two islands is 16%. Two distinct peaks in prevalence (29%) were observed at 25-35 years of age and again at 45-55 years of age for both the large and small islands. On the small island

Comparison of group and individual therapy in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: This review aimed to determine the effects of (digital) group therapies in comparison to individual therapies within physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. METHODS: Embase, PubMed and Web of Science were searched until May 2025. RoB 2 and GRADE were used to rate the risk of bias and the certainty of the evidence. Mean differences were used to analyze differences between group and individual therapy. RESULTS: Eleven studies were included in this review (eight of physiotherapy, two of speech therapy, and one of occupational therapy). The studies cover various di

Occupation-Related Injuries Among Healthcare Workers: Incidence, Risk Groups, and the Effect of Training.

Background and objective Occupation-related injuries (ORIs) are undesirable and harmful situations among healthcare workers (HCWs) and may have serious consequences. In this study, we aimed to identify and analyze ORI incidences, risk groups, and the outcomes of a training program to prevent them. Materials and methods Between January 2011 and December 2019, HCWs who applied for infection prevention and control (IPC) due to ORIs (percutaneous needlestick and sharp-object injury or contact with blood or body fluids) were included in the study. Their characteristic features, vaccine histories, i

Smoking cessation among transit workers: beliefs and perceptions among an at-risk occupational group.

BACKGROUND: Transit workers, in comparison to the general population, have higher rates of smoking. Although smoking cessation programs are often available through workers' HMOs, these programs are frequently underutilized. Quitting practices, including participation in cessation programs, are often associated with beliefs about smoking behaviors and the ability to quit. We analyzed how transit workers' beliefs about cessation might function as barriers to or facilitators of participating in cessation activities. FINDINGS: We conducted 11 focus group discussions with 71 workers (45% female; 8
