Baseline Characteristics of Participants in the Alberta Cancer Exercise Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation Study: A Wake-Up Call for Action.

Background: Alberta Cancer Exercise (ACE) is a hybrid effectiveness-implementation study evaluating a cancer-specific community-based exercise program across urban sites in Alberta, Canada. The purpose of this paper is to describe the baseline characteristics of participants. Methods: Adults with any type and stage of cancer, who were undergoing cancer treatment or up to three years post treatment completion, were eligible. ACE was delivered in person at 18 sites across 7 cities in Alberta, with video conferencing introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants took part in 60 min of mil

Baseline Characteristics of Individuals with Metastatic Cancer Enrolled in the Alberta Cancer Exercise Study and 12-Week Findings for Symptom-Related and Physical Fitness Measures.

Exercise has been found to be safe and beneficial for people with advanced cancers, but more research is needed to understand how best to design and implement exercise programming. The Alberta Cancer Exercise (ACE) study examines the effectiveness and implementation of a 12-week community-based exercise program in Alberta, Canada, for people diagnosed with cancer. Here, we describe the characteristics of individuals with metastatic cancer enrolled in the ACE program and report 12-week changes in self-reported and objective outcomes. Of 306 participants, 274 (89.5%) completed the 12-week study.

The use of extended amino acid motifs for focussing on toxic peptides in coeliac disease.

Cereal prolamins of wheat, rye and barley are the major proteins that have been implicated in toxicity in patients with coeliac disease. The gliadins of wheat are the best characterised with the identification of toxic peptides from rye and barley not as well advanced. This study has employed extended motifs, based on the known toxic motifs are derived from the sequence of A-gliadin, to search protein databases for matches with coeliac-toxic cereals. The results obtained have provided pointers to specific regions in rye and barley prolamins, which have received little attention in in vitro and

A comparative study on the effect of phenobarbitol and beta-methylcholanthrene on glutathione S-transferases of rat testis.

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs; EC, 2.5.1.18) ubiquitously distributed in all life forms, are a family of multigene and multifunctional dimeric proteins, which play a main role in drug detoxication. On purification and on electrophoresis, rat testicular glutathione S-transferases showed that it comprises of four subunits, Yc of alpha class, Yb and Ybeta of mu class and Ydelta of pi class. On chromatofocusing they were resolved into six anionic and four cationic isozymes. The substrate specificity studies and immunoblot analysis of testis proteins revealed that Ydelta of pi class GST was indu

Extraction of cereal prolamins and their toxicity in coeliac disease.

Simple extraction of prolamins from cereal flour using 70% aqueous ethanol leads to co-extraction of lipids and other secondary products. Treatment of the crude extract with an excess of pure ethanol resulted in the removal of the majority of these compounds. Prolamin extracts obtained following ethanol precipitation showed little difference to products of more complex, multi stage, selective extractions, when compared using MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Toxicity tests on enzymic digests of ethanol-precipitated prolamins from coeliac-toxic cereals, coeliac-non-toxic cereals and oats were carrie

Sulfo-SADP (sulfosuccinimidyl[4-azidophenyldithio]propionate) an active site directed reagent inhibiting the NADPH dependent O2- generation of leukocyte cytochrome b(558).

Functional reagents known to bring about the formation of a distinct membrane molecular complex of the subunits of cytochrome b(558) (gp 91(phox) and p22(phox)) were investigated for their influence on the O2- generating capability of liposome incorporated cytochrome b(558) preparations. One, ethyleneglycolbis[sulfo-succinimidylsuccinate], (sulfo-EGS) was found to inhibit O2- generation at concentrations which are known to result in cross-linking the two subunits of cytochrome b(558). Sulfosuccinimidyl [4-azidophenyldithio] propionate, (sulfo-SADP) on the other hand, was found to be a powerful

Fractionation of scorpion (Mesobuthus tamulus) venom and the impact of specific fractions on glutamate metabolism.

The fractionation of the venom of Indian red scorpion (Mesobuthus tamulus) was performed using CM-52 (carboxy methyl cellulose) ion-exchange chromatography. The toxic potential of these fractions were tested on lepidoptera larvae and mice. The CM-52 fractions, which showed toxicity were further used to study their impact on glutamate metabolism. The glutamate content increased and glutamine synthetase and glutamate decarboxylase activity levels were elevated in envenomated animals. The present results reveal that glutamine is rapidly metabolized to glutamate and gamma-aminiobutyric acid indica

Lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status in cervical cancer patients.

The present study examined the relationship between lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status in plasma, erythrocyte and erythrocyte membrane of cervical cancer patients and an equal number of age and sex matched normal subjects as well as patients with cervicitis. Lipid peroxidation was significantly increased with concomitant decrease in antioxidant levels in cervical cancer patients as compared to normal subjects and patients with cervicitis. The elevated lipid peroxidation and disturbed antioxidant status was also noticed in cervicitis patients as compared to normal subjects. This increase

Global burden of 292 causes of death in 204 countries and territories and 660 subnational locations, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Timely and comprehensive analyses of causes of death stratified by age, sex, and location are essential for shaping effective health policies aimed at reducing global mortality. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 provides cause-specific mortality estimates measured in counts, rates, and years of life lost (YLLs). GBD 2023 aimed to enhance our understanding of the relationship between age and cause of death by quantifying the probability of dying before age 70 years (70q0) and the mean age at death by cause and sex. This study enables comparis
