Catheter-related Bloodstream Infections: A Root Cause Analysis in a Series of Simultaneous Ochrobactrum anthropi Infections.

OBJECTIVE: Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs) pathogenesis is complex and multifactorial mostly due to cutaneous microorganisms migration through the catheter insertion site and catheter tip colonization. Ochrobactrum anthropi is a gram-negative bacterium belonging to the Brucellaceae and related infections are especially observed in immunocompromised patients. METHODS: Therefore, O. anthropi infection prevention and surveillance are relevant issues for healthcare system and risk management, in order to improve healthcare quality and patient safety. Four cases of anthropi-relate

Ochrobactrum anthropi-Caused Osteomyelitis in the Foot Mimicking a Bone Tumor: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Osteomyelitis due to Ochrobactrum anthropi, a new genus Ochrobacterum widely distributed in the environment and occasionally associated with human infection, has been described in only a few case reports. We present a report of an unusual case of osteomyelitis caused by O. anthropi that was identified 9 years after a nail puncture to the lateral cuneiform bone. The patient was an 18-year-old male with a painful foot lesion that had originally been misdiagnosed as an osteolytic tumor. He underwent surgery and 2 firm pieces of rubber measuring 7 and 10 mm were removed from the lower portion of t

The differential interaction of Brucella and ochrobactrum with innate immunity reveals traits related to the evolution of stealthy pathogens.

BACKGROUND: During evolution, innate immunity has been tuned to recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns. However, some alpha-Proteobacteria are stealthy intracellular pathogens not readily detected by this system. Brucella members follow this strategy and are highly virulent, but other Brucellaceae like Ochrobactrum are rhizosphere inhabitants and only opportunistic pathogens. To gain insight into the emergence of the stealthy strategy, we compared these two phylogenetically close but biologically divergent bacteria. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In contrast to Brucella abortus, Oc

Ochrobactrum anthropi used to control ammonium for nitrate removal by starch-stabilized nanoscale zero valent iron.

In this study, the hydrogenotrophic denitrifying bacterium Ochrobactrum anthropi was added in to the process of nitrate removal by starch-stabilized nanoscale zero valent iron (nZVI) to minimize undesirable ammonium. The ammonium control performance and cooperative mechanism of this combined process were investigated, and batch experiments were conducted to discuss the effects of starch-stabilized nZVI dose, biomass, and pH on nitrate reduction and ammonium control of this system. The combined system achieved satisfactory performance because the anaerobic iron corrosion process generates H2, w

Lethal septic shock after dental scaling in a healthy dog due to Ochrobactrum anthropi-contaminated propofol.

A 10-year-old, 6-kg male Yorkshire terrier dog was scheduled for routine dental cleaning. No significant problem was observed either during anaesthesia, which was induced with propofol, or during recovery. However, 2 hours after discharge, the dog's owner returned to the clinic, complaining that the animal was lethargic and had had bloody diarrhoea. On physical examination the dog was depressed, dyspnoeic, tachycardic and hypoglycaemic. Despite supportive treatment, the dog deteriorated and died within a few hours.A presumed diagnosis of sepsis was confirmed by laboratory testing. Bacteriologi

Ochrobactrum anthropi as a Rare Cause of Catheter-Related Bloodstream Infection: A Case Report From Morocco.

Ochrobactrum anthropi is a ubiquitous non-fermenting bacillus, rarely implicated in human infections. Reported infections are mostly catheter-related bacteremias, particularly in immunocompromised patients. We present what appears to be the first Moroccan case of catheter-related bloodstream infection associated with O. anthropi in a hemodialysis patient with underlying multiple myeloma. The diagnosis was confirmed by identification of the same organism from paired blood cultures, with a differential time to positivity indicating catheter involvement. Treatment included targeted antimicrobial

Niches, population structure and genome reduction in Ochrobactrum intermedium: clues to technology-driven emergence of pathogens.

Ochrobactrum intermedium is considered as an emerging human environmental opportunistic pathogen with mild virulence. The distribution of isolates and sequences described in literature and databases showed frequent association with human beings and polluted environments. As population structures are related to bacterial lifestyles, we investigated by multi-locus approach the genetic structure of a population of 65 isolates representative of the known natural distribution of O. intermedium. The population was further surveyed for genome dynamics using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and genomi

Towards a standardized format for the description of a novel species (of an established genus): Ochrobactrum gallinifaecis sp. nov.

A format for the description of single novel species is proposed, which should facilitate the reviewing process by assisting the provision of data in a standardized form. The abstract must be short and concise, highlighting phylogenetic position, morphology and chemotaxonomy for genus affiliation, the genotypic and phenotypic basis for species differentiation, and the name and deposition numbers from two public culture collections in different countries for the type strain: A Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterium (Iso 196(T)) was isolated from chicken faeces. Peeping into genomic architecture by re-sequencing of Ochrobactrum intermedium M86 strain during laboratory adapted conditions.

Advances in de novo sequencing technologies allow us to track deeper insights into microbial genomes for restructuring events during the course of their evolution inside and outside the host. Bacterial species belonging to Ochrobactrum genus are being reported as emerging, and opportunistic pathogens in this technology driven era probably due to insertion and deletion of genes. The Ochrobactrum intermedium M86 was isolated in 2005 from a case of non-ulcer dyspeptic human stomach followed by its first draft genome sequence in 2009. Here we report re-sequencing of O. intermedium M86 laboratory a

Isolation and characterization of a Cr(VI)-reduction Ochrobactrum sp. strain CSCr-3 from chromium landfill.

A strain CSCr-3 with high Cr(VI)-reducing ability under alkaline conditions was isolated from a chromium landfill and identified as Ochrobactrum sp. on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. The cells were rod shaped, Gram-negative and motile. The physiological characteristics and Cr(VI)-reduction of the strain were also studied. The results showed that the Ochrobactrum sp. strain CSCr-3 was tolerant to very high concentration of Cr(VI) (800 mg/L) and capable of reducing different forms of Cr(VI) (chromate and dichromate), under a wide range of temperatures (25-40 degrees C) and pH (7-1

Genotyping of Ochrobactrum anthropi by recA-based comparative sequence, PCR-RFLP, and 16S rRNA gene analysis.

A recA-PCR restriction fragment length polymorphism assay was developed to study intraspecies variation among Ochrobactrum anthropi. Primers deduced from the known recA gene sequence of the genetically closely related genus Brucella allowed the specific amplification of a 1065 bp recA fragment from each of the 38 O. anthropi and the eight Brucella strains investigated. RecA was also amplified from the type strains of O. intermedium, O. tritici, and O. lupini but could not be generated from O. grignonense and O. gallinifaecis. A new OCH β-lactamase from a Brucella pseudintermedia (Ochrobactrum pseudintermedium) strain isolated from Zophobas morio larvae.

OBJECTIVES: OCH class C β-lactamases have been reported in several species belonging to the Brucella genus that were formerly known as Ochrobactrum. Moreover, only one complete genome of Brucella pseudintermedia has been published. In this work, we describe the genome of a B. pseudintermedia strain possessing a new blaOCH gene that was isolated from Zophobas morio larvae. METHODS: Hybrid whole-genome sequencing analysis (Illumina and Nanopore) was used to identify and characterise the strain (Ops-OCH-23). Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence and a core-genome alignment we

Genome of Ochrobactrum anthropi ATCC 49188 T, a versatile opportunistic pathogen and symbiont of several eukaryotic hosts.

Ochrobactrum anthropi is a common soil alphaproteobacterium that colonizes a wide spectrum of organisms and is being increasingly recognized as an opportunistic human pathogen. Potentially life-threatening infections, such as endocarditis, are included in the list of reported O. anthropi infections. These reports, together with the scant number of studies and the organism's phylogenetic proximity to the highly pathogenic brucellae, make O. anthropi an attractive model of bacterial pathogenicity. Here we report the genome sequence of the type strain O. anthropi ATCC 49188, which revealed the pr

Brucella abortus and its closest phylogenetic relative, Ochrobactrum spp., differ in outer membrane permeability and cationic peptide resistance.

The outer membrane (OM) of the intracellular parasite Brucella abortus is permeable to hydrophobic probes and resistant to destabilization by polycationic peptides and EDTA. The significance of these unusual properties was investigated in a comparative study with the opportunistic pathogens of the genus Ochrobactrum, the closest known Brucella relative. Ochrobactrum spp. OMs were impermeable to hydrophobic probes and sensitive to polymyxin B but resistant to EDTA. These properties were traced to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) because (i) insertion of B. abortus LPS, but not of Escherichia coli LPS,

Therapeutic and antioxidant potential of bionanofactory Ochrobactrum sp.-mediated magnetite and zerovalent iron nanoparticles against acute experimental toxoplasmosis.

The control of toxoplasmosis, a rampant one health disease, has been focussed on conventional antitoxoplasmic agents with their adverse outcomes, including serious side effects, treatment failure and emergence of drug resistant strains. Nanobiotechnology may provide a strong impetus for versatile alternative therapies against toxoplasmosis. Bionanofactory Ochrobactrum sp. strain CNE2 was recruited for the biosynthesis of functionalized magnetite iron nanoparticles (MNPs) and nanozerovalent iron (nZVI) under aerobic and anaerobic conditions and their therapeutic efficacy was evaluated against a

Enhancement of L-ribulose Production from L-ribose Through Modification of Ochrobactrum sp. CSL1 Ribose-5-phosphate Isomerase A.

L-ribulose, a kind of high-value rare sugar, could be utilized to manufacture L-form sugars and antiviral drugs, generally produced from L-arabinose as a substrate. However, the production of L-ribulose from L-arabinose is limited by the equilibrium ratio of the catalytic reaction, hence, it is necessary to explore a new biological enzymatic method to produce L-ribulose. Ribose-5-phosphate isomerase (Rpi) is an enzyme that can catalyze the reversible isomerization between L-ribose and L-ribulose, which is of great significance for the preparation of L-ribulose. In order to obtain highly active

The effect of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of iron-oxidizing bacteria (Ochrobactrum EEELCW01) on mineral transformation and arsenic (As) fate.

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) are an important medium for communication and material exchange between iron-oxidizing bacteria and the external environment and could induce the iron (oxyhydr) oxides production which reduced arsenic (As) availability. The main component of EPS secreted by iron-oxidizing bacteria (Ochrobactrum EEELCW01) was composed of polysaccharides (150.76-165.33 mg/g DW) followed by considerably smaller amounts of proteins (12.98-16.12 mg/g DW). Low concentrations of As (100 or 500 µmol/L) promoted the amount of EPS secretion. FTIR results showed that EPS was compo
