Larval ascaridoid nematodes in horned and musky octopus (Eledone cirrhosa and E. moschata) and longfin inshore squid (Doryteuthis pealeii): Safety and quality implications for cephalopod products sold as fresh on the Italian market.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence, infection level and distribution of ascaridoid larvae in cephalopod products sold in Italy. Data on the species most commonly commercialized as whole and fresh on the Italian market were collected. After comparing commercial and literature data, Eledone spp., comprising E. cirrhosa and E. moschata (horned octopus and musky octopus, respectively) and Doryteuthis pealeii (longfin inshore squid) were selected, as they had been rarely investigated. Overall, 75 Eledone spp. caught in the Mediterranean Sea (FAO area 37) and 70 D. pealeii from the

Opioid inhibition of dopamine release from nervous tissue of Mytilus edulis and Octopus bimaculatus.

Morphine and D-Ala2-Met-enkephalin as well as other opioids suppress potassium-stimulated release of 3H-labeled dopamine from neurons tissue of two marine invertebrates, Mytilus edulis and Octopus bimaculatus. Naloxone reverses the inhibitory effects in both species. Potassium-stimulated release of 3H-labeled serotonin is not altered by opioids. It is postulated that opiate receptors and their endogenous effectors play a prominent role in regulation of transmitter release in invertebrates.

Cestode parasite accumulation in Octopus maya: Insights from an opportunistic sampling during the 2022 red tide event.

The infection dynamics of Prochristianella sp., a metacestode parasitizing the Yucatán Peninsula-endemic octopus, Octopus maya, were examined to explore the relationship between host size and parasitic infection parameters. During a red tide event, forty-nine octopuses were sampled from a single locality in the Yucatán Peninsula, México, and classified into three size classes. Infection metrics were assessed, including prevalence, mean intensity, abundance, and total parasite count. The results revealed a significant positive association (r = 0.85) between host size and the number of Prochrist

[Surveillance of cadmium level in octopus, squid, clam, short-necked clam and chocolate].

In order to investigate cadmium contents in foods sold in Japan, cadmium levels in 40 seafood samples and 30 chocolate samples were measured by means of atomic absorption spectrometry and ICP-OES. We first confirmed the validity of the method according to the guidelines of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Among 40 seafood samples investigated, cadmium was detected in 31 samples, in which the concentration exceeded half the LOQ (0.025 mg/kg), and the level was ranged from 0.03 to 0.38 mg/kg. We could not find any sample containing cadmium in excess of 2 mg/kg, which the Codex Aliment

[Cutaneous ulceration after an octopus bite: infection due to Vibrio alginolyticus, an emerging pathogen].

BACKGROUND: Vibrio alginolyticus is an anaerobic Gram-negative bacillus found in normal marine flora and is considered as non pathogenic for humans. Infections due to Vibrio alginolyticus are seldom reported and can be seen after exposure to seawater or to marine animals. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 51-year-old man was bitten on the back of the hand by an octopus that had just been caught in the Mediterranean Sea. A painful inflammatory cutaneous ulceration developed and did not heal despite treatment with bacitracin-neomycin ointment. The bacteriological smear revealed the presence of Vibrio alg

Design and simulation analysis of an octopus-inspired programmable magnetic soft robot.

Bioinspired soft robots leverage the efficient deformation mechanisms of living organisms to navigate complex environments. Magnetic actuation is a particularly promising modality for these designs due to its wireless control, rapid response, and biocompatibility. However, achieving sophisticated and controllable deformation remains a significant challenge. Inspired by the versatile deformation and stiffness-tuning capabilities of octopus tentacles, this study proposes a programmable magnetic soft robot (PMSR). The PMSR incorporates a truncated cone profile and an axisymmetric V-shaped notch s

The effect of temperature and challenge route on in vitro hemocyte phagocytosis activation after experimental challenge of common octopus, Octopus vulgaris (Cuvier, 1797) with either Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae or Vibrio anguillarum O1.

Infectious diseases in aquaculture could be associated with high mortalities and morbidity rates, resulting in negative impacts to fish farming industry, consumers, and the environment. Octopods are reared near marine fish farming areas, and this may represent a major risk since fish pathogens may cause pathologies to octopods. Up to date cephalopods immune defense and pathologies, are incompletely understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of water temperature and challenge route on hemocyte phagocytosis in vitro after experimental challenge of common octopus wit

Nerve degeneration and regeneration in the cephalopod mollusc Octopus vulgaris: the case of the pallial nerve.

Regeneration is a process that restores structure and function of tissues damaged by injury or disease. In mammals complete regeneration is often unsuccessful, while most of the low phyla animals can re-grow many parts of their body after amputation. Cephalopod molluscs, and in particular Octopus vulgaris, are well known for their capacity to regenerate their arms and other body parts, including central and peripheral nervous system. To better understand the mechanism of recovery following nerve injury in this species we investigated the process of axon regrowth and nerve regeneration after co

O-Crystallin, arginine kinase and ferritin from the octopus lens.

Three proteins have been identified in the eye lens of the octopus, Octopus dofleini. A 22 kDa protein comprising 3-5% of the soluble protein of the lens is 35-43% identical to a family of phosphatidylethanolamine-binding proteins of vertebrates. Other members of this family include the immunodominant antigen of the filarial parasite, Onchocerca volvulus, putative odorant-binding proteins of Drosophila and a protein with unknown function of Caenorhabditis elegans. We have called this protein O-crystallin on the basis of its abundance in the transparent lens. O-Crystallin mRNA was detected only

Laboratory maintenance, breeding, rearing, and biomedical research potential of the Yucatan octopus (Octopus maya).

Eggs of the Yucatan octopus, Octopus maya, were collected at Campeche, Mexico, transported to Hawaii, and incubated in glass funnels. Benthic juveniles hatched from the large (17-mm) eggs and were reared on a variety of live and frozen foods. As many as 200 animals were reared for the first month in a 20-liter aquarium. No disease or parasite problems were encountered and nearly all well-fed juveniles survived to sexual maturity. The species was reared through four generations in the laboratory. Animals weighed 0.1 g at hatching and within 8.5 months attained an average weight of 3231 g. Matin

High concentrations of dimethylamine and methylamine in squid and octopus and their implications in tumour aetiology.

The levels of the common secondary amines in various squid, in octopus and in 17 other seafoods were determined by HPLC. Ammonia and dimethylamine were found in all of the seafoods tested and some of them also contained methylamine and/or ethylamine. Particularly high levels of dimethylamine (946-2043 ppm) and methylamine (38-255 ppm) were detected in various species of squid and in the octopus. Reaction of nitrite in acidic medium with aqueous extract of squid yielded appreciable amounts of N-nitrosodimethylamine. The optimum pH for this reaction was around 2.4. Dimethylamine in dried squid t

An Octopus-Derived Peptide with Antidiuretic Activity in Rats.

Discovering new drug candidates with high efficacy and few side effects is a major challenge in new drug development. The two evolutionarily related peptides oxytocin (OXT) and arginine vasopressin (AVP) are known to be associated with a variety of physiological and psychological processes via the association of OXT with three types of AVP receptors. Over decades, many synthetic analogs of these peptides have been designed and tested for therapeutic applications; however, only a few studies of their natural analogs have been performed. In this study, we investigated the bioactivity and usefuln

Molecular Characterization and Signaling Mechanisms of a Corazonin-Type System in Octopus minor.

The gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) superfamily also includes corazonin-type (CRZ-type) signaling systems, yet their molecular features and transduction mechanisms remain poorly defined in cephalopods. Here, we cloned the full-length cDNAs of the CRZ-type peptide precursor OmCRZP and its cognate receptor OmCRZR from Octopus minor. OmCRZP encodes an 89-residue precursor containing a conserved dodecapeptide (pQNYHFSNGWHPG-NH₂), and OmCRZR encodes a 407-residue seven-transmembrane G protein-coupled receptor. Phylogenetic analyses placed OmCRZP within the cephalopod CRZ clade and OmCRZR with

Gonadal Transcriptome Sequencing Analysis Reveals the Candidate Sex-Related Genes and Signaling Pathways in the East Asian Common Octopus, Octopus sinensis.

The East Asian common octopus (Octopus sinensis) is an economically important species among cephalopods. This species exhibits a strict dioecious and allogamous reproductive strategy, along with a phenotypic sexual dimorphism, where the third right arm differentiates into hectocotylus in males. However, our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underlie sex determination and differentiation in this species remains limited. In the present study, we surveyed gene-expression profiles in the immature male and female gonads of O. sinensis based on the RNA-seq, and a total of 47.83 Gb of hi

Macrocyclic lactones from seafood Amphioctopus neglectus: Newly described natural leads to attenuate angiotensin-II induced cardiac hypertrophy.

Amphioctopus neglectus (Family: Octopodidae) is recognised as culinary delicacy in many cultures and a common sea food item on the Mediterranean and Asian coasts. Bioassay-directed fractionation of ethyl acetate/methanol extract of A. neglectus ensued in the characterisation of four previously undescribed macrocyclic lactones (1-4). These compounds exhibited potential radical-scavenging capacities (IC50 0.95-1.73 mM) along with anti-hypertensive activities (IC50 1.12-2.34 mM) against angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Structural basis of sensory receptor evolution in octopus.

Chemotactile receptors (CRs) are a cephalopod-specific innovation that allow octopuses to explore the seafloor via 'taste by touch'1. CRs diverged from nicotinic acetylcholine receptors to mediate contact-dependent chemosensation of insoluble molecules that do not readily diffuse in marine environments. Here we exploit octopus CRs to probe the structural basis of sensory receptor evolution. We present the cryo-electron microscopy structure of an octopus CR and compare it with nicotinic receptors to determine features that enable environmental sensation versus neurotransmission. A photoproduct with 13-cis retinal generated by irradiation with violet light in the octopus retina.

The photoconversion between rhodopsin (R) and metarhodopsin (MR) was investigated in the retina of Octopus ocellatus by measurements of the fast photovoltage (FPV) in conjunction with high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Following conversion of most of R to MR by short-term exposure to an intense violet light, a large vitreous negative FPV due to photon absorption by MR was observed with an orange test flash. By continuing the exposure to the same violet light, however, the negative FPV became very small, though long-term irradiation with blue-green light produced a recovery. With the v

Observations on the olfactory organ of adult and juvenile Octopus joubini.

The olfactory organ has an epithelium containing many sense cells and a large subepithelial mass of receptor cells. The epithelium includes cells with cup-shaped, ciliated endings, and hollow, flask-shaped sense cells with ciliated cavities that open to the surface, through a small pore. Below the epithelium are large hollow cells with ciliated cavities and distal processes that either form patent connections between the ciliated cavity and the surface or have a ciliated ending at the surface. There are many synapses between processes in the olfactory nerve. The possible chemosensory function
