Odontoma: a clinicopathologic study of 81 cases.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Odontoma is the most common odontogenic tumor. It includes 2 types, the compound and complex odontomas. There has not been a series study of the clinical and histologic features of odontomas from Taiwan. This study evaluated the clinicopathologic features of odontoma in Taiwanese. METHODS: Cases of odontoma treated from 1998 to 2002 identified from medical records were included. The microscopic features, radiographic features, and clinical history of the patients were reviewed and analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 81 odontomas in 81 patients (36 males and 45 females) were

Odontomas as a cause of tooth eruption disorders.

BACKGROUND: Odontomas are odontogenic tumors located in the jawbone, referred to by the World Health Organization (WHO) as hamartomatous (Greek hamartion - a bodily defect) developmental malformations. The term was first used by Brock in 1866 to refer to every odontogenic tumor. Today an odontoma is believed to be a congenital malformation of dental hard tissues. Odontomas can contribute to the development of dental abnormalities and bite disorders. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to present tooth eruption disorders caused by the occurrence of odontomas in 20 patients treated at the Dental Surger

Management of a Compound Odontoma in the Primary Dentition.

Odontomas are the most common benign odontogenic tumors of the oral cavity; however, their occurrence in the primary dentition is an extremely rare condition. When associated with primary teeth, odontomas may lead to disturbances in tooth eruption, which often requires a multidisciplinary treatment approach. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature on odontomas of the primary dentition and discuss the management of a compound odontoma in a pediatric patient.

Multiple compound odontomas in mandible: A rarity.

Odontomas are benign odontogenic tumors composed of enamel, dentine, and cementum and pulp tissue. They are usually clinically asymptomatic, but often associated with tooth eruption disturbances. The present study reports an unusual case of eleven odontomas in the left lateral incisor-canine region of lower jaw. A 26 years old female presented to the department of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics in H.P. Govt. Dental College and Hospital Shimla for the treatment of misaligned teeth. Clinical examination revealed that the lower left lateral incisor was missing. Patient was advised for r

Complex Odontoma Initially Suspected to be Eruption Sequestrum.

Various pieces of information, including the age of the patient, the site involved, symptoms, intraoral findings, and X-ray findings are necessary in making a clinical diagnosis. This report describes a case in which the initial diagnosis was eruption sequestrum based on clinical information but which was later found to be a complex odontoma based on histopathological findings. The patient was an 8-year-old girl who presented at our hospital with the chief complaint of pain in the right mandibular molar region. The distal aspect of the right mandibular first molar, which had partially erupted,

[Dens invaginatus or dilated odontoma, a definition controversy].

The invaginate tooth (IT) is an alteration in the development of the dental organ, which occurs as a consequence of invagination of the internal epithelium of the enamel organ. IT is also known as "dens in dente", among other denominations, and presents a series of clinical, histological and imaging characteristics. The most extreme variant of IT has a very complex configuration, and the magnitude of the intussusception has led to it also being called dilated odontoma, being a term that generates confusion in some professionals. While the term odontoma has been reported as a synonym for both IT

Ameloblastic Fibro-Odontoma Misidentified as an Enamel Pearl.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare, benign, and mixed odontogenic tumor that consists of both ectodermal and mesenchymal elements. AFO is more prevalent in young children and adolescents than in adults and is usually found in the molar area associated with a failure of tooth eruption. The purpose of this report is to discuss the differential diagnosis and treatment of a three-year-old girl diagnosed with an AFO around a primary canine. The manifestations of the lesion resembled localized periodontal disease caused by an enamel pearl. Excision and curettage were done and the separated

Compound Odontoma in Anterior Mandible-A Case Report.

Odontomas are the most common odontogenic hamartomas worldwide. Depending on the level of organisation of the tissues inside, these can be differentiated into compound type or complex type. As these are asymptomatic and do not cause any changes in the bone, they are often diagnosed during the routine dental examination. Complex odontomas are commonly found to occur in posterior mandible while compound odontomas are found in the anterior maxilla. A nine-year-old female child reported for a routine dental check-up, when a missing left permanent mandibular lateral incisor [32] was noticed. Furthe

Erupted complex odontoma delayed eruption of permanent molar.

Odontomas, benign tumors that develop in the jaw, rarely erupt into the oral cavity. We report an erupted odontoma which delayed eruption of the first molar. The patient was a 10-year-old Japanese girl who came to our hospital due to delayed eruption of the right maxillary first molar. All the deciduous teeth had been shed. The second premolar on the right side had erupted, but not the first molar. Slight inflammation of the alveolar mucosa around the first molar had exposed a tooth-like, hard tissue. Panoramic radiography revealed a radiopaque mass indicating a lesion approximately 1 cm in di

Two-stage surgical removal of large complex odontoma.

PURPOSE: The surgical treatment of a large complex odontoma in the mandibular angle is reported. Four possible surgical approaches to remove a benign tumor in the mandibular angle are discussed. PATIENT: A two-stage surgical treatment was chosen; first, removing most part of the lesion and preserving the second molar, decreasing the risk of a pathological mandibular fracture. A maxillo-mandibular fixation for a period of 4 weeks was used. The patient was oriented to maintain a soft diet. The second surgical stage occurred 3 months after the first one due to the significant bone consolidation

Large complex odontoma associated with a primary tooth.

Odontomas are developmental malformations of dental tissues, and they may interfere with the eruption of the associated tooth. Odontomas have limited growth potential, and their occurrence in the primary dentition is uncommon. This article describes a case of a large complex odontoma in a 5.2-year-old boy that prevented eruption of the mandibular left lateral incisor. The odontoma was surgically removed, routine follow-up was done for more than a year, and no recurrence was seen.

Compound composite odontoma associated with an impacted cuspid.

This case report involved the removal of a compound composite odontoma from a fourteen year-old male patient at an urban dental school. The pathology report did indeed reveal the tissue mass was that of a compound composite odontoma. These lesions usually occur in the second decade of life, in the anterior maxilla or mandible, with no gender or race predilection. Three types of odontomas are identified, including are: compound composite odontoma, complex composite odontoma, and ameloblastic fibro-odontoma. The etiology of these lesions is unknown, although environmental (trauma, infection) and

[Diagnosis of compound odontoma. Apropos of 2 cases].

We have a bibliografical study of the composite odontomas from the diagnostical point of view. We will present two clinical cases. Once the medical revision is done, and the tumor is localized, we analyze lesions associated with the tumor and compare the diagnostic from the clinical point of view as well as the radiografical point of view.

Ameloblastic Fibro-odontoma with a Predominant Radiopaque Component.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare odontogenic tumor. Initially believed to be a lesion similar to ameloblastic fibroma (AF), it is now considered as a separate entity in the WHO odontogenic tumor classification. Commonly associated with a painless swelling and an associated absence of eruption of a tooth, AFO presents as a mixed radiopaque and radiolucent lesion in the younger population with a predilection for the posterior region. Histologically, it shows the characteristics of an immature complex odontoma with irregularly arranged enamel, dentinoid, cementoid-like structures, and

Management of large erupting complex odontoma in maxilla.

We present the unusual case of a large complex odontoma erupting in the maxilla. Odontomas are benign developmental tumours of odontogenic origin. They are characterized by slow growth and nonaggressive behaviour. Complex odontomas, which erupt, are rare. They are usually asymptomatic and are identified on routine radiograph but may present with erosion into the oral cavity with subsequent cellulitis and facial asymmetry. This present paper describes the presentation and management of an erupting complex odontoma, occupying the maxillary sinus with extension to the infraorbital rim. We also di
