Pediatric off-highway vehicle (OHV) injuries-including those from all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), utility terrain vehicles (UTVs), dirt bikes, golf carts, and snowmobiles-are a preventable public health issue. Between 2018 and 2020, children younger than 16 years of age accounted for 27% of the 500 000 OHV-related injuries reported by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. In this review, ATVs were the most frequently involved, with head and neck injuries (56%) and fractures (21%) being the most cited. UTV crashes resulted in severe fractures (45%) and amputations (4%), whereas snowmobiles ca

BACKGROUND: Over decades, governments have enacted policies and legislation mandating strategies to reduce the incidence and severity of all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries. We performed a systematic review to determine the efficacy of laws and policies in reducing these injuries.
METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, 20 articles from the peer-reviewed literature were systematically selected. Associations between legislation/policy and changes or differences in injury numbers, rates or severity were queried.
RESULTS: Data wer

Major bronchial injury during blunt trauma is a life-threatening occurrence in children. We describe a 3-year-old female who presented with a near circumferential tear at the takeoff of the right upper lobe bronchus after an all-terrain vehicle accident. This is an unusual blunt traumatic injury in the pediatric population and highlights the need for evaluation when a large, persistent air leak occurs after chest tube placement.

OBJECTIVES: All-terrain vehicle (ATV) legislation in Québec is among the most restrictive in Canada. The purpose of our study was to characterize the pediatric ATV traumas in our center and determine the impact of legislation.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of all patients seen in the emergency department after an ATV injury was done from 2005 to 2011.
RESULTS: Seventy-tree patients (50 boys and 23 girls) with a mean age of 11 years (range, 3-17 years) were identified. Forty-nine percent were drivers, 40% were passengers, and 11% unknown. Forty-five percent did not reach the legal age o

Vehicle use during military training activities results in soil disturbance and vegetation loss. The capacity of lands to sustain training is a function of the sensitivity of lands to vehicle use and the pattern of land use. The sensitivity of land to vehicle use has been extensively studied. Less well understood are the spatial patterns of vehicle disturbance. Since disturbance from off-road vehicular traffic moving through complex landscapes varies spatially, a spatially explicit nonlinear regression model (disturbance model) was used to predict the pattern of vehicle disturbance across a tr

BACKGROUND: All-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related injuries have increased. The purpose of this study was to determine if the increase in injuries correlates with the expiration of government mandates.
METHODS: ATV-injured patients admitted to a level I trauma center were reviewed over the years 1985-1999 and 2000-2005. Several demographic variables and injuries sustained were analyzed.
RESULTS: There were a total of 433 injuries, which increased from 164 between 1985 and 1999, to 269 between 2000 and 2005. By comparing the time periods we observed a decrease in closed-head injury (53.6% vs 27.5%

Motorcycle crashes are a substantial public health problem for children and teens. During 2003, among persons aged </=19 years, at least 245 died and an estimated 56,870 were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments (EDs) for injuries sustained while riding a motorcycle. National surveillance has focused primarily on monitoring and characterizing fatal and nonfatal injuries from motorcycle crashes occurring on public roads. However, during 2003, at least 13 motorcycle riders aged </=19 years died in nontraffic incidents in places other than on public roads. This report focuses on injurie

During the 14-year period from 1990-2003, West Virginia experienced 220 deaths related to All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs). Death rates in West Virginia however, were significantly higher than the national rate or those of any of the its five surrounding states. About 25% of the West Virginia deaths occurred in children less than 18 years of age. Ninety-five percent of the victims were not wearing helmets and 15% were passengers. Nearly one-third of the ATV crashes occurred on public roads, streets, and highways--surfaces on which ATVs are not designed nor recommended to be used. The cost of ATV-re

Background: The hazardous nature of the agricultural environment, reflected in the numerous injuries and deaths to children who live, work and play on farms, coupled with the lack of a comprehensive national surveillance system in the United States, highlights the need for making the best use of publicly available youth agricultural injury data. Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe a 3-year collection of youth agricultural injuries using the publicly available injury and fatality data from AgInjuryNews.org and present recommendations for future injury prevention strategies. OBJECTIVES: The purpose was to evaluate the characteristics of off-highway vehicle (OHV) crashes correlated with neurological injury and accident severity in the pediatric population in El Paso, Texas.
METHODS: A retrospective review of 213 patients who were victims of an OHV crash attended at a regional Level I trauma center from 2012 to 2020 was performed. OHVs were defined as vehicles designated for use outside public roads. Neurological outcomes included any traumatic brain injury (TBI) or a brain hemorrhage/hematoma. Severe injury was defined as a Glasgow Coma Scale less than 8, a length

BACKGROUND: Remarkably little research has been published on chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) of the forearm. This study investigated forearm flexor compartment pressure pre- and post-exercise in elite motorbike racers clinically diagnosed with CECS and assessed their grip strength before and after arm pump exercise.
METHODS: Elite motorbike riders with a clinical diagnosis of CECS of the right forearm when racing were recruited during the opening rounds of a British Superbike season. Their grip strength and forearm flexor compartment pressures were measured before and after a s

It is futile to attempt resuscitation in a blunt injury patient with no vital signs upon arriving at the emergency department. Therefore, it is recommended that resuscitation be withheld in any blunt trauma patient without vital signs while emergency medical technicians arrive at the scene of the accident. This report presents a case of a blunt torso trauma patient who lost vital signs at the scene and still received cardiopulmonary resuscitation until recovery of spontaneous circulation at the emergency department. The patient was later diagnosed with commotio cordis, and survived to be disch

This study examined social capital development in three all-terrain vehicles (ATV) clubs in Maine using an adapted version of Lin's (2001) social capital theory model. The structural components of social capital identified included collective assets and individual assets in the form of normative behavior and trust relationships. Also identified were counter-norms for individual ATV riders identified as having divergent norms from club members. The second component of social capital is access to and mobilization of network contacts and resources. Access networks in the context of the ATV clubs

Many farmers with disabilities choose to modify their work environments to accommodate their personal abilities; however, modified tractors may present greater risk to the operator as they are often one-of-a-kind designs that have not been subjected to rigorous safety testing. The objective of this research was to evaluate mechanical tractor pedal , extensions from a safety perspective. This objective was achieved by identifying potential hazards associated with the introduction of a pedal extension into the cab environment so that both existing and novel designs could be compared using a comm

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) have increased in popularity and sales since 1971. This rise in popularity led to an increase in injuries resulting in voluntary industry rider safety regulations in 1988, which expired without renewal in 1998. Our purpose was twofold, to determine the incidence and severity of ATV injuries in our patient population and what, if any impact the safety regulations had. To further characterize the risk of ATV use, we compared them to a vehicle generally recognized as dangerous, the motorcycle (MC). Our trauma registry was reviewed from January 1998 through August 2004

All-terrain vehicles (ATV) are designed for off-the-road occupational or recreational use. As their popularity has been increasing steadily, information has been accumulating on the morbidity and mortality associated with their use. The attributes of the ATV that make it attractive for recreation and sport are the reasons for much of its danger. Thus, horsepower, speed and ability to travel on rough and uncertain terrain are causal factors for accidents. The poor judgment and risk-taking of many of the young and immature drivers contribute to the great danger. 61 admissions due to ATV accident

Fracture of the occipital condyle is a rare injury. We report a patient with an occipital condyle fracture who presented with negative plain films and a cranial nerve palsy. Diagnosis was established with high-resolution computed tomography. This fracture should be considered in a trauma patient with neck pain, negative plain cervical spine radiographs, and a cranial nerve palsy.

BACKGROUND: The use of off-road vehicles such as all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and recreational off-highway vehicles has increased in recent years. A higher percentage of patients hospitalised following ATV crashes suffered severe injuries, compared with those hospitalised following other MVCs.
OBJECTIVE: To identify incidence of ATV-related injury and characterise groups with higher prevalence.
METHODS: A retrospective study of the Israel National Trauma Registry data between years 2008 and 2016. ATV crash victims were compared with other types of MVC casualties according to demographics, inj

Motocross racing is a demanding motorcycling discipline with significant physiological and psychological demands. Upper extremity injuries are frequently encountered. Interestingly, motocross riders present with a significantly stronger left arm, even if the left hand is not dominant. This difference is attributed to the use of the clutch lever with the left hand, which is more frequent in motocross than in Enduro or desert rally. The wrist has been reported to be involved especially among motocross racers in contrast to road racing. Besides wrist fractures, scaphoid fractures have been previo
