Phytoremediation of metals in oil sands process affected water by native wetland species.

Process affected water and other industrial wastewaters are a major environmental concern. During oil sands mining, large amounts of oil sands process affected water (OSPW) are generated and stored in ponds until reclaimed and ready for surface water discharge. While much research has focused on organics in process waters, trace metals at high concentrations may also pose environmental risks. Phytoremediation is a cost effective and sustainable approach that employs plants to extract and reduce contaminants in water. The research was undertaken in mesocosm scale constructed wetlands with plant

A new nanocomposite forward osmosis membrane custom-designed for treating shale gas wastewater.

Managing the wastewater discharged from oil and shale gas fields is a big challenge, because this kind of wastewater is normally polluted by high contents of both oils and salts. Conventional pressure-driven membranes experience little success for treating this wastewater because of either severe membrane fouling or incapability of desalination. In this study, we designed a new nanocomposite forward osmosis (FO) membrane for accomplishing simultaneous oil/water separation and desalination. This nanocomposite FO membrane is composed of an oil-repelling and salt-rejecting hydrogel selective laye

Advances in micro-nano scale seepage in unconventional reservoirs: Experiments, simulations, and modeling perspectives.

The global energy landscape is undergoing a strategic shift toward unconventional oil and gas resources, which are predominantly hosted in complex multiscale pore systems dominated by micro- and nanoscale pores. A major bottleneck to their cost-effective development lies in the limited understanding of hydrocarbon transport mechanisms at these scales. This review begins with a systematic assessment of pore network structures in unconventional reservoirs, categorizing current pore characterization techniques according to their strengths in qualitative identification and quantitative analysis. Evaluating the impacts of drilling and extraction activities on the marine carbonate system in the natural gas fields of Beibu Gulf, Northern South China Sea.

Natural gas fields are typically located in shallow gulfs. Previous studies have predominantly focused on gas leakage and its subsequent toxic effects on marine organisms; however, the impacts of accidental CO2 leaks on carbonate dynamics during drilling and extraction remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigate carbonate parameters in two gas fields to elucidate the influences of extraction activities and natural processes on carbonate dynamics in Beibu Gulf, situated in the northern South China Sea (nSCS). Our findings indicate that Beibu Gulf acts as a CO2 source during the late

A systematic review of maternal residential proximity to unconventional oil and Natural gas sites and congenital heart defects in newborns: Recommendations for future research.

Various studies indicated that pregnant women living near UONG sites may be more likely to give birth to infants with CHDs due to exposure to air, water, and soil pollution generated by these sites. We systematically searched three English-language databases-PubMed, Scopus, and the Web of Science Core Collection-from their inception until September 21, 2024 to include all types of epidemiological studies that explored the associations between maternal residential proximity to UONG sites and CHDs in the US. We screened a total of 282 unique studies and included six cohort and case-control studi

Composition and Origin of Surface Casing Fluids in a Major US Oil- and Gas-Producing Region.

Fluids leaked from oil and gas wells often originate from their surface casing─a steel pipe installed beneath the deepest underlying source of potable groundwater that serves as the final barrier around the well system. In this study, we analyze a regulatory dataset of surface casing geochemical samples collected from 2573 wells in northeastern Colorado─the only known publicly available dataset of its kind. Thermogenic gas was present in the surface casings of 96.2% of wells with gas samples. Regulatory records indicate that 73.3% of these wells were constructed to isolate the formation from w

Effect of CO2 on the SRB-induced corrosion behavior of X65 steel in oilfield-produced water.

X65 steel is widely used in oil and gas pipelines. However, in complex oilfield environments, X65 steel is highly susceptible to CO2 corrosion and microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC). The corrosion behavior of X65 steel was systematically investigated in the absence and presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) under CO2 conditions, using weight loss measurements, electrochemical techniques, and surface characterization. Corrosion products were analyzed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. Results showed that CO2 initially accelerated abiotic corrosion by forming carbonic acid, a

Aqueous- and solid-phase molybdenum geochemistry of oil sands fluid petroleum coke deposits, Alberta, Canada.

Fluid petroleum coke generated at oil sands operations in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region of northern Alberta, Canada, contains elevated concentrations of molybdenum (Mo) and other metals including nickel (Ni) and vanadium (V). Solid-phase Mo concentrations in fluid petroleum coke are typically 10 to 100 times lower than V and Ni, yet dissolved Mo concentrations in associated pore waters are often comparable with these metals. We collected pore water and solids from fluid petroleum coke deposits in the AOSR to examine geochemical controls on Mo mobility. Dissolved Mo concentrations increased wi

Novel strategy for treating high salinity oilfield produced water: Pyrite-activated peroxymonosulfate coupled with heterotrophic ammonia assimilation.

Existing conventional biological treatment techniques face numerous limitations in effectively removing total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and ammonia (NH4+-N) from oilfield-produced water (OPW), highlighting the pressing need for innovative pre-oxidation and biological treatment processes. In this study, a pyrite-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-coupled heterotrophic ammonia assimilation (HAA) system was established to achieve satisfactory system performance for OPW treatment. Pyrite sustained-release Fe2+-activated PMS was used to produce SO4•- and •OH, and 71.0 % of TPHs were effectively

A review on anaerobic microorganisms isolated from oil reservoirs.

The Role of microorganisms in the petroleum industry is wide-ranging. To understand the role of microorganisms in hydrocarbon transformation, identification of such microorganisms is vital, especially the ones capable of in situ degradation. Microorganisms play a pivotal role in the degradation of hydrocarbons and remediation of heavy metals. Anaerobic microorganisms such as Sulphate Reducing Bacteria (SRB), responsible for the production of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) within the reservoir, reduces the oil quality by causing reservoir souring and reduction in oil viscosity. This paper reviews the

Transformation of bitumen-derived naphthenic acid fraction compounds across surface waters of wetlands in the Athabasca Oil Sands region.

Bitumen is extracted from oil sands in the Athabasca Oil Sands region (AOSR) of Alberta, Canada. Much of the bitumen-derived toxicity in mine waste is attributable to naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs). Mines in the AOSR are required to be returned to a natural state after closure; thus, cost-effective strategies are needed to reduce toxicity from NAFCs. Previous studies have demonstrated the capability of constructed wetlands to attenuate NAFCs. However, the capacity of wetlands in the natural environment to degrade and transform NAFCs to less toxic components is poorly understood. To

Thermophilic biohydrogen production from reservoir residual hydrocarbons using palm oil mill effluent-derived microbial consortia.

Residual crude oil remaining in depleted reservoirs represents a largely untapped carbon source for biological hydrogen generation. Previous studies have relied on indigenous bacteria present in oil reservoirs but reported low hydrogen yields, as not all reservoir microorganisms are hydrogen-producing. Therefore, in this study, external mixed culture bacterial consortia obtained from palm oil mill effluent (POME) were used to degrade crude oil for hydrogen production. Morphological changes in microbial communities were assessed using field emission scanning electron microscopy. Metagenomic pro

Total Mercury and Methylmercury in Lake Water of Canada's Oil Sands Region.

Increased delivery of mercury to ecosystems is a common consequence of industrialization, including in the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) of Canada. Atmospheric mercury deposition has been studied previously in the AOSR; however, less is known about the impact of regional industry on toxic methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in lake ecosystems. We measured total mercury (THg) and MeHg concentrations for five years from 50 lakes throughout the AOSR. Mean lake water concentrations of THg (0.4-5.3 ng L-1) and MeHg (0.01-0.34 ng L-1) were similar to those of other boreal lakes and <5% of all sa

Sensitivity of the copepods temora longicornis and tisbe battagliai to produced water from offshore oil fields.

Produced Water (PW), the main by-product of oil and gas extraction, poses potentially important ecological risks due to its chemical composition (including hydrocarbon residues, production chemicals, metals) and its direct discharge to the sea. This study examines PW toxicity from four offshore North Sea oil fields, using acute tests with the copepods Tisbe battagliai and Temora longicornis. It primarily addresses residual and persistent toxicity affected by storage conditions. A wide range of PW concentrations was used to determine median lethal concentrations (LC50). Temporal and spatial var

Methanogenic biodegradation of cyclohexane by microbial consortia from oil sands tailings.

Cyclohexane, a significant component of light oils and some refined fuels, can be introduced into the environment through petroleum production and fuel spills; it is also present in tailings from certain surface-mined oil sands ores. The environmental fate of cyclohexane is cryptic in oxygen-depleted methanogenic environments. Indigenous microorganisms in primary oil sands tailings cultures and cyclohexane-adapted-d12 enrichments were used to test methanogenic biodegradation of 1 mM cyclohexane alone or with the potential co-substrate n-heptane in a 70:30 mixture. We assessed substrate depleti

Accumulating Mercury and Methylmercury Burdens in Watersheds Impacted by Oil Sands Pollution.

Bitumen mining and upgrading in northeastern Alberta, Canada, releases toxic pollutants into the atmosphere, including mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg). This Hg and MeHg is then deposited to the surrounding landscape; however, the fate of these contaminants remains unknown. Here, we compare snowpack chemistry to high-frequency measurements of river water quality across six watersheds (five impacted by oil sands development and one unimpacted). Catchment scale snowpack Hg and MeHg loads normalized to watershed area were highest near oil sands operations. River water Hg concentrations and l

Respiratory health, pulmonary function and local engagement in urban communities near oil development.

BACKGROUND: Modern oil development frequently occurs in close proximity to human populations. Los Angeles, California is home to the largest urban oil field in the country with thousands of active oil and gas wells in very close proximity to homes, schools and parks, yet few studies have investigated potential health impacts. The neighborhoods along the Las Cienagas oil fields are situated in South LA, densely populated by predominantly low-income Black and Latinx families, many of whom are primarily Spanish-speakers. METHODS: A cross-sectional community-based study was conducted between Janu
