An ointment prepared from fat (sheabutter) obtainable from an indigenous (African) fruit released medicaments faster than either of the two ointment bases recommended by the British Pharmacopoeia. Reduction in particle size of crystalline medicaments incorporated in ointments increased surface area and transfer from the ointment to the substrate, possibly due to greater dissolution in the base, and, therefore, increased the availability of medicament at the ointment-substrate interface.

Benzoic acid and salicyclic acid in ointments were analyzed quantitatively by reversed-phase high-pressure liquid chromatography. Both benzoic and salicyclic acids can be assayed in combinations directily without interference from each other or the ointment bases. The method is accurate, simple, and rapid. Excellent results were obtained with three commercial bases.

This is a report of two patients suspected of having allergic dermato-conjunctivitis due to corticosteroids. Both were tested with the constituents of the ointments they were using, that is, corticosteroids, antibacterial agents, preservatives, and other active ingredients of the ointment bases. BACKGROUND: Application of various technological procedures for the manufacture of officinal preparation ointment against chilblains (Unguentum contra perniones) produce essential variations in the quality and stability of the final product. Changing the sequence of admixing active substances into the ointment base indicated the presence of incompatibility between the active substances, as well as between the active substances and the ointment base components.
