Epidemiology and clinical characteristics of tularemia in Oklahoma, 1979 to 1985.

We studied the clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of tularemia in 165 Oklahomans from 1979 to 1985. The ulceroglandular form of the disease was most common (60%), followed by typhoidal (18%), glandular (15%), oropharyngeal (7%), and oculoglandular (1%) forms. The male-female ratio was 3.7:1, and the highest rates of disease were found in the age groups 5 to 14, 35 to 44, and 55 to 74. Ticks were most frequently implicated as the source of infection (84/154 [55%]), followed by rabbits, (58/154 [38%]). Seventy percent of the patients were hospitalized, and four (2.5%) died. The annual nu

Epidemiology and mortality of dermatomyositis and polymyositis in Oklahoma 2010-2023.

OBJECTIVES: Dermatomyositis (DM) and polymyositis (PM) are autoimmune diseases characterised by muscle inflammation, presenting significant challenges in clinical management. Both diseases share common features, such as muscle involvement, but differ in clinical manifestations. This study aims to compare the epidemiologic characteristics and mortality rates of DM and PM among a population of Oklahoma patients. METHODS: Utilising data from the Clinical Research Data Warehouse (CRDW) at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC), a retrospective cohort study was conducted to exam

College Students' Knowledge of Ticks in Oklahoma: Assessment and Insights.

Ticks (Arachnida: Acari) are common in Oklahoma and may transmit tick-borne diseases (TBDs) to people. Due to the difficulty in reducing tick populations, awareness of tick bite prevention, proper tick removal, and knowledge of when to seek medical treatment are critical. However, outreach and extension programs are hampered by a lack of knowledge of what community members know about ticks. To address this limitation, we surveyed college students enrolled in three non-major Entomology courses at Oklahoma State University in 2018. Of the 483 students invited to take a survey, 224 (46.4%) studen

An overview of women seeking substance abuse treatment in Oklahoma.

Current studies of neurocognitive function in alcoholics are generally restricted to a relatively small subsample of persons seeking treatment. Subjects are typically excluded from study if reporting signs or symptoms of possibly confounding disorders such as comorbid psychiatric disorders, medical, or neurologic disorders. Thus, the question arises as to whether those individuals who actually participate in these reported studies are representative of the larger population of unselected persons. Studies of women are particularly subject to this concern due to higher rates of comorbid medical

OKlahoma Nitrone-007: novel treatment for diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is the most common brainstem cancer in childhood. This rapidly progressing brainstem glioma holds a very dismal prognosis with median survival of less than 1 year. Despite extensive research, no significant therapeutic advancements have been made to improve overall survival in DIPG patients. METHODS: Here, we used an orthotopic xenograft pediatric DIPG (HSJD-DIPG-007) mouse model to monitor the effects of anti-cancer agent, OKlahoma Nitrone-007 (OKN-007), as an inhibitor of tumor growth after 28 days of treatment. Rheumatic disease among Oklahoma tribal populations: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Rheumatic diseases cause significant morbidity within American Indian populations. Clinical disease presentations, as well as historically associated autoantibodies, are not always useful in making a rapid diagnosis or assessing prognosis. The purpose of our study was to identify autoantibody associations among Oklahoma tribal populations with rheumatic disease. METHODS: Oklahoma tribal members (110 patients with rheumatic disease and 110 controls) were enrolled at tribal-based clinics. Patients with rheumatic disease (suspected or confirmed diagnosis) were assessed by a rheumatolo

All-terrain vehicle-related central nervous system injuries in Oklahoma.

OBJECTIVE: Determine the statewide, population-based incidence and epidemiology of all-terrain vehicle (ATV)-related severe central nervous system (CNS) injuries in Oklahoma. METHODS: Hospitalized and fatal traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries are reportable conditions in Oklahoma. Professionally trained staff reviewed all medical examiner and hospital medical records. RESULTS: From 1992 through 2002 there were 391 persons hospitalized (n=353) or died (n=38) from an ATV-related neurologic injury (average annual rate 1.1/100,000 population), including 369 traumatic brain injuries

Association between benzene and congenital anomalies in Oklahoma, 1997-2009.

OBJECTIVES: Although the most common cause of death in infants, little is known about the aetiology of congenital anomalies. Recent studies have increasingly focused on environmental exposures, including benzene. While benzene is known to affect the central nervous system, the effects on the developing fetus are unclear. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study to evaluate the association between ambient benzene exposure and the prevalence of congenital anomalies among 628 121 singleton births in Oklahoma from 1997 to 2009. We obtained benzene from the Environmental Protection Agenc

Factors associated with injury severity in Oklahoma City bombing survivors.

BACKGROUND: Terrorist bombings are an increasing source of violent death and injury worldwide. Injuries in building bombings have been previously reported in descriptive studies, but no comparative analyses have quantitatively assessed factors influencing the severity of nonfatal bombing injuries. The objective of this study was to identify personal and environmental risk factors for injury severity in the Oklahoma City bombing, on April 19, 1995. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective comparative analysis of 509 nonfatally injured occupants of four buildings surrounding the detonation site. T

Incidence of Legionella pneumophila infections among Oklahoma pulmonary disease patients.

Prior studies by the authors suggested high levels of Legionella pneumophila in the recreational and water supply reservoirs in central Oklahoma. This high exposure potential was supported by a relatively high prevalence of seropositive, asymptomatic infections among healthy blood donors in the area. In contrast, the present 9-month laboratory-based study confirmed only one clinical Legionella infection among 117 unidentified pulmonary disease patients admitted to the Oklahoma City Veterans Administration Medical Center. Comparison with the reports of others and with reported legionellosis in

Lissamphibian origins: possible protolissamphibian from the lower permian of oklahoma.

A new genus and family of rhachitomous labyrinthodont amphibian, related to the Upper Paleozoic Dissorophidae and Trematopsidae, may be ancestral to some or all of the modern Amphibia. Doleserpeton occurs in Lower Permian fissure fill deposits in southwestern Oklahoma. It is unique among nonlissamphibian tetrapods in that it possesses pedicellate, bicuspid teeth together with nearly monospondylous vertebrae in which the main central element is a pleurocentrum. Doleserpeton may have been utilizing the food resources of the upland, terrestrial environment in a novel fashion for rhachitomes.

Medical Marijuana Legalization in Oklahoma: Effects on Neonatal Exposure to Opiates.

OBJECTIVE: The U.S. opioid epidemic has been characterized by increases in opioid misuse, overdose deaths, and neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome. Research suggests that marijuana legalization has contributed to decreased use of opiates, although many studies had methodological weaknesses and failed to address the pregnant population. Implementation of medical cannabis laws has the potential to reduce maternal opioid use and, therefore, neonatal exposure to the drugs. This study aimed to examine the association between Oklahoma's implementation of state medical marijuana laws and the neonatal

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease in a Native American population in Oklahoma.

PURPOSE: To describe the presentation, features, and outcomes of patients with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease (VKH) seen by uveitis specialists in Oklahoma. METHODS: Clinical data were collected for 26 patients (52 eyes) diagnosed with VKH and seen between 1992 and 2018. Main outcome measures included rates of visual loss, ocular complications, and remission. RESULTS: There were 11 Native American (NA) patients (11/26, 42.3%) and 15 non-Natives (n-NA). NA VKH patients were significantly more likely to present at a younger age (18.6 years) than n-NA VKH patients (30.1 years) (p = 0.023). NA pat

The Oklahoma City bombing: the roles of the dental teams ... and the lessons learned.

The Oklahoma City bombing is considered by most historians the worst act of domestic terrorism ever to have occurred in the United States. The response to the disaster, however, is considered by most experts in the field as being the best; creating what is known as the "Oklahoma Standard". The roles of the dental teams in the resolution were pivotal and until now, the recognition of these roles have not been described, due to this being considered a case of mass murder. The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the preparations, the initial responses, the roles of the dental teams in

Relationship of cliff swallows, ectoparasites, and an Alphavirus in west-central Oklahoma.

Approximately 250 isolates of a newly recognized virus, related to western equine encephalitis virus (family Togaviridae, genus Alphavirus), were obtained from cimicid bugs, Oeciacus vicarius; Cliff Swallows, Hirundo pyrrhonata; and House Sparrows, Passer domesticus in a study area in west-central Oklahoma at Buggy Creek and Caddo Canyons. Antigenicity of the virus strains varied slightly from isolate to isolate. This paper summarizes the ecology of the area by describing in general the flora and fauna there.

Characteristics of fatal gunshot wounds in the home in Oklahoma: 1982-1983.

Children are a unique group at risk of injury from firearms because of their immaturity, curiosity, and imitative behavior. All unintentional firearm deaths in persons younger than age 20 years that occurred in Oklahoma in 1982 and 1983 were reviewed. There were 32 unintentional deaths from firearms in children from birth to age 19 years. The death rate in rural counties was four times that of urban counties. Twenty-seven deaths (85%) occurred at home, with an adult present in only two cases. The home death rate for males was 5.2 times that of females, with 15- to 19-year-old males most at ris

Is passive surveillance always insensitive? An evaluation of shigellosis surveillance in Oklahoma.

The authors studied the reporting of shigellosis in Oklahoma to evaluate the sensitivity of the state-based passive surveillance system for shigellosis. They found that passive surveillance for shigellosis can be more sensitive than has been previously observed. Laboratory-based reporting was found to be far superior to reporting by physicians.
