Anti-influenza virus activity of the elenolic acid rich olive leaf (Olea europaea L.) extract Isenolic®.

Seasonal flu is caused by influenza infection, a virus that spreads easily in human population with periodical epidemic outbreaks. The high mutational rate of influenza viruses leads to the emergence of strains resistant to the current treatments. Due to that, scientific research is focusing on the development of new anti-influenza agents as alternative or complementary treatments. Olive tree (Olea europaea L.) has been a source of ancestral remedies due to its antimicrobial activity. Thus, the aim of this study was to test the anti-influenza activity of a standardized olive leaf extract rich

Identification and functional characterization of UDP-glycosyltransferases catalyzing the glycosylation of oleoside 11-methyl ester in Olea europaea.

MAIN CONCLUSION: Two UDP-glycosyltransferases from Olea europaea were identified and characterized. Both catalyze the glycosylation of oleoside 11-methyl ester to form 7-β-1-D-glucopyranosyl 11-methyl oleoside, a putative intermediate in the oleuropein biosynthetic pathway. INTRODUCTION: Oleuropein, a secoiridoid glycoside abundant in Oleaceae plants, is extensively utilized in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmetic industries due to its diverse pharmacological activities. The biosynthetic pathway from oleoside 11-methyl ester (OME) to oleuropein remains incompletely elucidated. In t

Physiological and Metabolite Reconfiguration of Olea europaea to Cope and Recover from a Heat or High UV-B Shock.

To understand how olives reconfigure their metabolism to face stress shock episodes, plants from the economically relevant olive (Olea europaea cv. Cobrançosa) were exposed to high UV-B radiation (UV-B, 12 kJ m-2 d-1) or heat shock (HS, 40 °C) for two consecutive days. The physiological responses and some important lipophilic compounds were evaluated immediately (day 0) and 30 days after UV-B or HS episodes. Both treatments induced a reduction of the olive physiological performance, particularly increasing cell membrane damages and proline pool and at the same time reducing chlorophyll levels,

Influence of Atmospheric Pollutants on Allergic Sensitization to Cupressaceae, Olea, and Platanus Pollen in the Community of Madrid (2017-2021).

Tree pollen is the most abundant in the Community of Madrid (CAM), and specifically, pollen types from Olea, Cupressaceae, and Platanus are the most allergenic, after Gramineae, in this Spanish region. Air pollutants are one of the most significant stress factors for wind-pollinated vegetation, especially in urban areas, and can cause alterations in the immune system and the consequent triggering of type I hypersensitivity reactions mediated by immunoglobulin E (IgE). This study analyses the allergic sensitization caused by the interrelation of O3, NO2, and PM10 pollutants with the tree pollen

Evaluation of Olea europaea L. and Tamarix aphylla leaves extracts in the management of pain, pyrexia and allergy in mice and rats.

A huge amount of information, related to herbals is based exclusively on historical beliefs. Therefore, we aim to provide scientific validation for some of the traditional uses attributed to Olea europaea (OE) and Tamarix aphylla (TA). To achieve this, we conducted experiments to ensure the safety of the aqueous extract of OE and the methanolic extract of TA. Subsequently, we investigated the peripheral and central antinociceptive activity, antipyretic properties, and anti-allergic activities using albino mice and Wistar rats. Both plant extracts at the doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg produced po
