Four beef cows grazing in a mountainous grassland area had acute onset of drooling, frothy oral discharge, hyperemic mucous membranes, diarrhea, anorexia, dyspnea, and recumbency. A 10-year study showed that 45 of 692 cattle aged > 6 months had systemic mycosis and, of these, 38 had alimentary mycosis. The percentages of these 38 cattle with lesions in various sites were: rumen (73.7), omasum (71.1), abomasum (34.2), reticulum (21.1), intestine (15.8), omasoabomasal orifice (7.9) and tongue (2.6). Competitive PCR assays were developed for the enumeration of the rumen cellulolytic bacterial species: Fibrobacter succinogenes, Ruminococcus albus and Ruminococcus flavefaciens. In this study, we investigated the tissue distribution and expression of monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1) along the gastrointestinal tract of sheep. Western blot analysis suggested the presence of MCT1 as a 43-kDa protein in immunoblots of membranes from the various tissues examined. Systemic mycoses were found in 19 (4.7%) of 406 calves less than 6 months old which were autopsied during the past 10 years. Alimentary mycosis occurred in 12 (63.2%) of 19 cases. During a 6-year period, 62 out of 2,980 calves examined (2.08%) between 1-30 days of age had lesions consistent with Bovine herpesvirus 1 infection. Cutaneous and rhinofacial infections by Pythium insidiosum have previously been reported in sheep in Brazil. In the current study, a new form of pythiosis involving the alimentary tract of 2 nursing lambs from 2 different farms in the semiarid region of Brazil is described.
