First molecular evidence of Toxoplasma gondii in opossums (Didelphis virginiana) from Yucatan, Mexico.

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite recognized as a causal agent of toxoplasmosis; zoonotic disease endemic in many countries worldwide, including Mexico. Different species of animals participate in the wild cycle infection, including opossums of the species Didelphis virginiana. Thirteen D. virginiana were captured in Yucatan, Mexico. Detection of T. gondii was achieved by Polymerase Chain Reaction, which determined an infection of 76.9% (10/13) in brains. Positive amplicons were sequenced for analysis, this produced results similar to T. gondii with identity and coverage

Sphincter of Oddi cyclic motility. Effect of translocation of the papilla in opossums.

The role of myoneural continuity between the sphincter of Oddi and duodenum in coordinating sphincter cyclic motility and the duodenal migrating myoelectric complex was studied in conscious opossums. Five animals underwent implantation of the duodenal papilla into the jejunum. Myoelectric recording was obtained from the sphincter, duodenum, and jejunum in these animals and from 5 other animals as controls. The mean spike frequency of the sphincter of controls was 1.6 per min during phase I, 4.2 per min during phase II, 11.0 per min during phase III, and 3.6 per min during phase IV of the duode

Naturally Acquired Rabies in White-Eared Opossum, Brazil.

Opossums are considered resistant to rabies. Nonhematophagous bats are reservoirs of rabies in urban areas of South America. We analyzed bats and opossums tested for rabies during 2021 in a highly urbanized city in Brazil to understand spillover in an urban setting. Wildlife surveillance is necessary to prevent rabies in humans and domestic animals.

Behavioral and nutritional aspects of the Virginian opossum (Didelphis virginiana).

Virginia opossums are widely distributed throughout the United States, except in the most arid regions, and wild individuals are commonly brought to practitioners for medical attention. Opossums' popularity as pets seems to be growing, and it is likely that pet opossums will be more common in veterinary practice. Clinicians must be aware of natural opossum behaviors so that thorough physical examination and diagnostic procedures can be performed on injured patients. For animals kept captive long-term or as pets, veterinarians must understand proper nutrition and nutritional disorders, such as

Development of the eye in the North American opossum (Didelphis virginiana).

Marsupials are unique models for developmental biology-oriented research because of the immature state of their development at birth. The North American opossum (Didelphis virginiana) has several advantages over other marsupials, including large litter size, short prenatal period (12.5 d), an extended postnatal period while accessible in the pouch, and its ability to reproduce reliably in captivity. Studies of ocular development in this species have not been reported previously. The aim of the present investigation was therefore to document the major landmarks in prenatal and postnatal develop

Differential OMP expression in opossum accessory olfactory bulb.

Using immunohistochemical techniques, olfactory marker protein (OMP) was localized to the main (MOB) and accessory (AOB) olfactory bulbs of 30- and 45-day-old, and adult Brazilian opossums, Monodelphis domestica. Entire olfactory nerve and glomerular layers of the adult opossum MOB were darkly stained. In the adult AOB the rostral half of these two layers was stained more intensely than the caudal half, and both parts were less darkly stained than the MOB. This differential AOB staining was not present at 30 days of age, but was evident by postnatal day 45, although not as dramatic as in adult

Substance P stimulates the opossum sphincter of Oddi in vitro.

We have previously shown that substance P (SP) regulates sphincter of Oddi (SO) motility in vivo. However, its mechanism of action remains unclear. Our aim was to develop an in vitro model to measure spikeburst (SB) an contractile frequency (CMC) of the SO and to characterize further SP effects. In 16 opossums, SO rings were excised, mounted within a Kreb's tissue bath with bipolar electrodes and force transducers, allowed to equilibrate, and exposed to increasing SP concentrations with washout between each test solution. Spikeburst and CMC frequencies were recorded on a polygraph, quantitated

Control mechanisms of sphincter of Oddi contraction rate in the opossum.

Our aim in this study is to determine whether extrinsic autonomic nerves regulated spike-burst rate in the opossum sphincter of Oddi (SO) during fasting or after feeding. We implanted electrodes on the distal SO, proximal SO, gastric antrum, duodenum, and jejunum of 20 animals. A cut transection and reanastomosis was done at different levels of the SO to interrupt putative extrinsic or intrinsic nerves, or the SO was painted with phenol to impair extrinsic nerves. Like controls, animals with a cut and reanastomosis at the proximal SO or at the SO-duodenal junction showed a normal fasting patte

Influence of autonomic drugs on the motility of the sphincter of Oddi in the opossum.

We have evaluated the effect of various autonomic drugs on the electromyographic activity of the sphincter of Oddi and the small intestine of seven opossums. Hexamethonium bromide and atropine sulfate abolished and bethanechol increased the frequency of spike bursts in the sphincter of Oddi and duodenum. Phenylephrine and epinephrine increased the number of spike bursts in the sphincter of Oddi after a short period of stimulation. No spike potentials were seen in the duodenum after infusion of norepinephrine. Clonidine and dobutamine decreased spike burst activity in the sphincter of Oddi and

Arrangement of the myenteric plexus throughout the gastrointestinal tract of the opossum.

Silver impregnation of the myenteric plexus of the opossum gut was used to find differences among various regions. In the esophagus, the plexus was sparse and ganglia were spaced irregularly, many being parafascicular. Ganglia were sparse in the striated-muscle region, but more frequent in the smooth-muscle region. In the stomach, uniformly spaced ganglia were large and intrafascicular; ganglia were larger in the distal stomach than in the proximal stomach. The proximal stomach contained thick fascicles, called shunt fascicles, radiating from the lesser to the greater curvatures and bypassing

Effect of histamine on motor function of opossum sphincter of Oddi.

In this study, we evaluated the effect of histamine on phasic contractile activity in the opossum sphincter of Oddi (SO). SO manometry was done in 35 animals, using an infused catheter system with minimal compliance. In anesthetized animals, phasic SO contractions occurred at a frequency of 7.3 +/- 0.3 (SE) contractions/min with an amplitude of 83 +/- 4 mmHg. Intravenous histamine (5-80 micrograms/kg) invariably inhibited the frequency and amplitude of SO phasic contractions. At larger doses, the SO contractions were abolished for several minutes. The SO inhibitory effect of histamine was dupl

Three layers of the opossum stomach: responses to nerve stimulation.

The three muscle layers of the opossum stomach were compared in their responses to electrical field stimulation. Strips were cut from the muscular wall of the stomach with their longer axes in the direction of the longitudinal, circular, and oblique muscle layers and stimulated at 1-min intervals with 20-sec trains of 1-msec pulses at 10 Hz and supramaximal strength at 500 ma. Strips either contracted, relaxed, or did not respond during the stimulus trains. Responses were abolished by tetrodotoxin, 10(-6) M. Contractions, but not relaxations, were abolished by atropine, 10(-6) M. Relaxations w

Spontaneous cure after natural infection with Gnathostoma turgidum (Nematoda) in Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana).

Seasonality of the nematode Gnathostoma turgidum in Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana) in the wild has been reported; however, the mechanisms involved in deworming are unknown. We monitored the parasitologic and biologic changes in four Virginia opossums naturally infected with G. turgidum by coproparasitologic examination and abdominal ultrasonography. Eggs became detectable in the feces of opossums in May, peaked in July and August, and suddenly decreased in October. Adults of G. turgidum were expelled in the feces mainly in September. Ultrasonography of the liver showed slight damage

Sarcocystis falcatula of opossums: transmission by cockroaches with fatal pulmonary disease in psittacine birds.

Old World psittacines experienced an acute fatal illness in outdoor breeding collections in South Florida. Toxoplasma-like organisms were found histologically in pulmonary capillaries and elsewhere. Because the organisms underwent schizogony and could not be transmitted to mice, we looked for a cause other than Toxoplasma gondii. An opossum was trapped on the premises of 1 facility and was found to be shedding sporocysts similar to Sarcocystis falcatula in its feces. Cockroaches were prevalent and suspected as transport hosts. Cockroaches that had ingested opossum feces and subsequently were f

Pulmonary lesions in Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana): Characterizing fungal pneumonia associated with Purpureocillium lilacinum.

Several pulmonary lesions have been described in Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana), but fungal pneumonia in this species is largely unrecognized. We retrospectively analyzed gross and histologic pulmonary findings in 28 opossums from Louisiana. Lung sections were evaluated for fungal organisms, associated histologic changes, and other concurrent pulmonary lesions. Seventy-five percent of opossums (21/28) had pulmonary fungal organisms, and gross lesions were characteristic, consisting of patchy to generalized, indistinct, pinpoint, light-yellow parenchymal foci. These areas corresponded

Serologic Surveillance for Orthoflaviviruses and Chikungunya Virus in Bats and Opossums in Chiapas, Mexico.

We performed serologic surveillance for selected arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) in bats and opossums in the Lacandona Rainforest, Chiapas, Mexico, in 2023-2024. Sera were collected from 94 bats of at least 15 species and 43 opossums of three species. The sera were assayed by the plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) for antibodies to eight orthoflaviviruses (dengue viruses 1-4, St. Louis encephalitis virus, T'Ho virus, West Nile virus, and Zika virus) and one alphavirus (chikungunya virus; CHIKV). Twelve (12.8%) bats and 15 (34.9%) opossums contained orthoflavivirus-specific antib

A novel Babesia sp. of the "Western Babesia group", detected in opossums from Guatemala.

Babesia spp. are tick-borne protozoans that involve birds and mammals in their transmission cycles and cause babesiosis, a severe hemolytic malaria-like disease. Opossums of the genus Didelphis are recognized hosts of tick-borne pathogens. Therefore, exploring tick-borne agents in Didelphis species is important to understand the circulation of pathogens in areas where opossums occur. In this study, we targeted Anaplasmataceae, Babesia, Borrelia and Hepatozoon DNA in ticks, blood and organ samples collected from three hunted Didelphis marsupialis specimens in eastern Guatemala. While the sample
