Optical flow and driver's kinematics analysis for state of alert sensing.

Road accident statistics from different countries show that a significant number of accidents occur due to driver's fatigue and lack of awareness to traffic conditions. In particular, about 60% of the accidents in which long haul truck and bus drivers are involved are attributed to drowsiness and fatigue. It is thus fundamental to improve non-invasive systems for sensing a driver's state of alert. One of the main challenges to correctly resolve the state of alert is measuring the percentage of eyelid closure over time (PERCLOS), despite the driver's head and body movements. In this paper, we p

Reconfigurable acquisition system with integrated optics for a portable flow cytometer.

Portable and inexpensive scientific instruments that are capable of performing point of care diagnostics are needed for applications such as disease detection and diagnosis in resource-poor settings, for water quality and food supply monitoring, and for biosurveillance activities in autonomous vehicles. In this paper, we describe the development of a compact flow cytometer built from three separate, customizable, and interchangeable modules. The instrument as configured in this work is being developed specifically for the detection of selected Centers for Disease Control (CDC) category B bioth

Sensory prediction on a whiskered robot: a tactile analogy to "optical flow".

When an animal moves an array of sensors (e.g., the hand, the eye) through the environment, spatial and temporal gradients of sensory data are related by the velocity of the moving sensory array. In vision, the relationship between spatial and temporal brightness gradients is quantified in the "optical flow" equation. In the present work, we suggest an analog to optical flow for the rodent vibrissal (whisker) array, in which the perceptual intensity that "flows" over the array is bending moment. Changes in bending moment are directly related to radial object distance, defined as the distance b

Looming responses of telencephalic neurons in the pigeon are modulated by optic flow.

The movement of animals through space filled with various objects requires the interaction between neuronal mechanisms specialized for processing local object motion and those specialized for processing optic flow generated by self-motion of the animal. In the avian brain, visual nuclei in the tectofugal pathway are primarily involved in the detection of object motion. By contrast, the nucleus of the basal optic root (nBOR) and the pretectal nucleus lentiformis mesencephali (nLM) are dedicated to the analysis of optic flow. But little is known about how these two systems interact. Using single

Measurement of flow-dependent decorrelation times of scattering samples using acousto-optic light.

Acousto-optic imaging (AOI) combines light and ultrasound (US) to probe the optical properties inside a multiple scattering medium, such as biological tissue, with a resolution set by the ultrasound. However, in dynamic media like tissue, the motion of scatterers decorrelates the US-tagged optical field, broadening its spectral width and reducing the efficiency of holography-based detection schemes. Speckle decorrelation is usually considered a limitation, as it degrades the signal-to-noise ratio. Here, we show that, despite this, it can be exploited as a source of contrast. Using four-phase d

Direction-selective laterodorsal thalamic nucleus encodes optic flow and turning in spatial navigation.

Vision is crucial for efficient navigation, but how the brain transforms visual signals into navigational cues remains unclear. The laterodorsal thalamic nucleus (LD), with strong connections to visual and navigation circuits, is well positioned for this function, yet its role has been largely unexplored. In mice, we found that LD neurons exhibit strong direction selectivity, with a dominant directional preference for contralateral-to-ipsilateral visual motion, mirroring horizontal optic flow during contraversive turning. In freely moving animals, LD ensembles were preferentially activated dur

Laser speckle contrast imaging detects relative blood flow reduction in traumatic optic neuropathy.

CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old male sustaining craniofacial injuries from a collision reported vision loss in the left eye on hospital day 12. An ophthalmologic examination revealed a visual acuity of 20/20 in the right eye and no light perception (NLP) in the left eye. Dilated fundus exam showed pink, sharp margins of the optic disc in the right eye and slight temporal pallor of the optic disc in the left eye. Imaging revealed findings consistent with impingement of the optic nerve at the level of the sphenoid fracture. The patient was diagnosed with direct, posterior traumatic optic neurop

Joint representation of translational and rotational components of optic flow in parietal cortex.

Terrestrial navigation naturally involves translations within the horizontal plane and eye rotations about a vertical (yaw) axis to track and fixate targets of interest. Neurons in the macaque ventral intraparietal (VIP) area are known to represent heading (the direction of self-translation) from optic flow in a manner that is tolerant to rotational visual cues generated during pursuit eye movements. Previous studies have also reported that eye rotations modulate the response gain of heading tuning curves in VIP neurons. We tested the hypothesis that VIP neurons simultaneously represent both h

Changes in mesenteric blood flow response to feeding: conventional versus fiber-optic phototherapy.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether fiberoptic phototherapy influences the postprandial increase in mesenteric blood flow velocity similarly to conventional phototherapy in preterm infants. PATIENTS AND METHODS: With the use of Doppler color ultrasonography, blood flow velocity in the superior mesenteric artery was measured both preprandially and postprandially in 19 preterm infants during and after conventional phototherapy, and in 20 preterm infants during and after fiber-optic phototherapy. The mean arterial blood pressure/mean flow velocity ratio was calculated as an estimate of relative vascu

Postural stability and optic flow sensitivity following sight restoration from congenital bilateral cataracts.

Vision is crucial for maintaining balance and facilitating locomotion. Optic flow, for example, provides key self-motion cues for navigation. Congenital blindness typically leads to increased postural sway and impaired navigation. Here, we investigated postural stability and optic flow sensitivity in individuals surgically treated for congenital dense bilateral cataracts years after birth. Experiment 1 assessed whether cataract-treated participants rely on vision to stabilize their stance with eyes open compared with eyes closed. Cataract-treated participants decreased their sway with open eye

Temporal synchrony effects of optic flow and vestibular inputs on multisensory heading perception.

Precise heading perception requires integration of optic flow and vestibular cues, yet the two cues often carry distinct temporal dynamics that may confound cue integration benefit. Here, we varied temporal offset between the two sensory inputs while macaques discriminated headings around straight ahead. We find the best heading performance does not occur under natural condition of synchronous inputs with zero offset but rather when visual stimuli are artificially adjusted to lead vestibular by a few hundreds of milliseconds. This amount exactly matches the lag between the vestibular accelerat

Increased Optic Nerve Head Capillary Blood Flow in Early Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: Blood flow in the optic nerve head (ONH) is known to be reduced in eyes with advanced glaucoma. However, experimental results from non-human primates suggest an initial increase in ONH blood flow at the earliest stages of damage. This study assesses flow and pulsatile hemodynamics across a range of severities to test the hypothesis that this also occurs in human glaucoma. METHODS: Laser speckle flowgraphy was used to measure average mean blur rate (MBRave) within ONH tissue (a correlate of capillary blood flow) and the pulsatile waveform in 93 eyes with functional loss and 74 glaucom

Embodied memory: effective and stable perception by combining optic flow and image structure.

Visual perception studies typically focus either on optic flow structure or image structure, but not on the combination and interaction of these two sources of information. Each offers unique strengths in contrast to the other's weaknesses. Optic flow yields intrinsically powerful information about 3D structure, but is ephemeral. It ceases when motion stops. Image structure is less powerful in specifying 3D structure, but is stable. It remains when motion stops. Optic flow and image structure are intrinsically related in vision because the optic flow carries one image to the next. This relatio

Effects of optic atrophy on retinal blood flow and oxygen saturation in humans.

Retinal blood flow and oxygen saturation were evaluated in patients with unilateral inner retinal degeneration secondary to neurogenic optic atrophy. Arteriovenous O2 saturation for temporal and nasal vascular segments of the affected eyes, evaluated by retinal vessel oximetry, was 12% +/- 9% higher than in the fellow eyes (seven patients). Blood flow in the temporal retinal arteries of the affected eyes, measured by the laser Doppler technique, was 48% +/- 20% lower than in the fellow eyes (four patients). The combination of these results indicated a 40% +/- 29% reduction in O2 delivery in th

The effect of retrobulbar epinephrine injection on ocular and optic nerve blood flow.

The effect of retrobulbar epinephrine administration on ocular and optic nerve blood flow was studied in phakic and aphakic rabbit eyes using a radioactive microsphere (85Sr) technique. One hour before blood flow determination, 10 microliter of a 0.2% (base) epinephrine bitartrate solution was administered to the right eye of each experimental rabbit by the retrobulbar route. For control rabbits, 10 microliter of saline was injected retrobubarly. Blood flow measurements were determined for the iris, scrap[ed ciliary processes, choroid, retina, and optic nerve. Neither optic nerve nor ocular bl

Measuring choriocapillaris blood flow with laser Doppler optical coherence tomography.

The impact of research and the development of therapeutics for blood cancer must be measured to direct future studies. Here, we used a life-years saved (LYS) methodology to quantify that impact. We estimate 25.8 million cumulative LYS across major blood cancer types in the US since 1949. The majority of LYS (~20 million) were for Hodgkin lymphoma (HL), acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). NHL stands out due to a high incidence, while HL and ALL have accumulated LYS over the longest period. LYS were lowest for acute myeloid leukemia and intermediate for multiple m
