Optic Nerve Avulsion After Finger-Poke Injury.

We present a case of optic nerve avulsion as a result of finger-poke injury to the eye. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography demonstrated a plunging cup indicative of the avulsion, a finding not previously described. Optic nerve avulsion is a form of anterior indirect traumatic optic neuropathy evoked by a sudden severe rotation at the junction of the optic nerve and globe induced, in this case, by penetration of the finger into the nasal orbit.

Optic nerve injury in a patient with chronic allergic conjunctivitis.

Manipulation of the optic nerve can lead to irreversible vision changes. We present a patient with a past medical history of skin allergy and allergic conjunctivitis (AC) who presented with insidious unexplained unilateral vision loss. Physical exam revealed significant blepharospasm, mild lid edema, bulbar conjunctival hyperemia, afferent pupillary defect, and slight papillary hypertrophy. Slit lamp examination demonstrated superior and inferior conjunctival scarring as well as superior corneal scarring but no signs of external trauma or neurological damage were noted. Conjunctival cultures a

A new and reliable animal model for optic nerve injury.

OBJECTIVE: To create an animal (rat) model of force percussion injury (FPI) to the optic nerve for clinical and experimental research. METHODS: Seventy-one healthy female Wister rats, with no ocular disorders, were used in this study. Sixty-six rats were subjected to bilateral blunt trauma to the eyes via FPI; five rats were not subjected to trauma. According to the degree of optic nerve injury, injured eyes were divided into two groups: severe optic nerve injury group, with beat pressures of 699.14 ± 60.79 kPa and mild optic nerve injury group, with beat pressures of 243.18 ± 20.26 kPa. Optically mediated nerve stimulation: Identification of injury thresholds.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Transient optical nerve stimulation is a promising new non-contact, spatially precise, artifact-free neural excitation technique useful in research and clinical settings. This study evaluates safety of this pulsed infrared laser technique by histopathologic examination of stimulated peripheral nerves. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS: Exposed rat sciatic nerves were functionally stimulated with the pulsed Holmium:YAG laser, previously validated as an effective tool for optical stimulation. Nerves were removed immediately and up to 2 weeks after stimulation and asse

Axonal regeneration of fish optic nerve after injury.

Since Sperry's work in the 1950s, it has been known that the central nervous system (CNS) neurons of lower vertebrates such as fish and amphibians can regenerate after axotomy, whereas the CNS neurons of mammals become apoptotic after axotomy. The goldfish optic nerve (ON) is one of the most studied animal models of CNS regeneration. Morphological changes in the goldfish retina and tectum after ON transection were first researched in the 1970s-1980s. Many biochemical studies of neurite outgrowth-promoting substances were then carried out in the 1980s-1990s. Many factors have been reported to b

Reversible visual loss following optic nerve injury.

A case of shrapnel injury to the optic nerve documented by computed tomography, resulting in total, but partially reversible visual loss, is presented. In view of the visual field defect and computed tomographic findings, a transient vascular insult is incriminated. The irreversible loss in the lower field of vision is related to the shearing effect of trauma on the vulnerable pial vessels supplying the upper half of the nerve.

Optic Canal Decompression with a Lateral Approach for Optic Nerve Injury Associated with Traumatic Optic Canal Fracture.

Optic canal fracture (OCF) is a traumatic injury that requires urgent intervention because it can induce optic nerve damage and visual impairment. Despite the severity of OCF, a standard treatment method has not been established. In this article, we report a case of OCF and traumatic optic nerve injury in which visual acuity was recovered by releasing the optic canal using an unconventional lateral approach. A 43-year-old man presented with right lateral ethmoid fracture, right orbit blowout fracture, and OCF. The visual acuity was "hand motion" before surgery. Decompression was performed 10 h

Multifunctional Catechol-Functionalized Cellulose Hydrogels for the Minimally Invasive Treatment of Acute Optic Nerve Injuries.

Oxidative stress-induced retinal ganglion cell degeneration is a major pathological feature of acute optic nerve injury, yet current posterior-segment therapies are limited by poor local retention and repeated invasive administration. Here, we developed an injectable catechol-functionalized carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel, CMCDA, as a bioadhesive and antioxidative intravitreal platform. Through dopamine grafting and oxidative crosslinking, CMCDA exhibited shear-thinning injectability, self-healing behavior, wet-tissue adhesion, controlled biodegradability, and good biocompatibility. Regenerative and other responses to injury in the retinal stump of the optic nerve in adult albino rats: transection of the intracranial optic nerve.

The response to injury of the proximal (retinal) stump of the intracranially transected optic nerve in adult rats has been studied by electron microscopy. The central part of the retinal stump of the optic nerve underwent severe ischaemic damage resulting in the formation by 3 days postoperation (dpo) of a cone-shaped region of necrotic tissue which extended from a base occupying most of the cross-sectional area of the nerve at the cut end to an apex within the intraorbital part of the nerve and only 2-3 mm from the eyeball. A mixture of apparently viable and dead or dying cells and axons was

Regenerative and other responses to injury in the retinal stump of the optic nerve in adult albino rats: transection of the intraorbital optic nerve.

The proximal stump of the optic nerve was examined by electron microscopy from 1 d to 8 wk (dpo/wpo) after intraorbital transection. At 1 dpo a layer of axonal, cytoplasmic and myelin debris approximately 15 microns thick was present at the cut end. A zone approximately 25 microns thick of abnormal and partly degenerate tissue composed of many swollen axons filled with organelles of predominantly abnormal appearance lay between the zone of debris and more proximal levels of the optic nerve, which retained a normal appearance. The earliest putative axonal sprouts were seen at 1 dpo in this zone

Optic nerve injury-associated blunt cerebrovascular injury: Three case reports.

RATIONALE: Blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) is a rare complication that may occur after craniocervical trauma. The current literature is limited to extracranial carotid artery injuries; however, no reports have been published on blunt intracranial carotid injury (BICI), especially those associated with optic nerve injury. PATIENT CONCERNS: Here we report on 3 BICI cases that demonstrated optic nerve injuries after craniofacial injuries. All 3 patients showed post-trauma vision loss on the injured side. DIAGNOSES: Optical canal fractures can be found in these patients, and carotid sulcus w

Spermidine promotes retinal ganglion cell survival and optic nerve regeneration in adult mice following optic nerve injury.

Spermidine acts as an endogenous free radical scavenger and inhibits the action of reactive oxygen species. In this study, we examined the effects of spermidine on retinal ganglion cell (RGC) death in a mouse model of optic nerve injury (ONI). Daily ingestion of spermidine reduced RGC death following ONI and sequential in vivo retinal imaging revealed that spermidine effectively prevented retinal degeneration. Apoptosis signal-regulating kinase-1 (ASK1) is an evolutionarily conserved mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase and has an important role in ONI-induced RGC apoptosis. We demon

Nerve injury associated with orthognathic surgery. Part 3: lingual, infraorbital, and optic nerves.

In the final paper of this 3-part series we review the incidence of injuries to the lingual, infraorbital, and optic nerves during orthognathic operations. We know of few published studies on the incidence of injuries to the lingual or infraorbital nerves, but in most cases they are thought to result from traction and are predominantly temporary. The incidence of permanent injury to the lingual nerve was 2/100 patients (95% CI 1 to 3/100) or 0/100 nerves (95% CI 0 to 1/100). The methods used to assess injury to the infraorbital nerve differed so it was not possible to calculate the incidence.

Retinal Genomic Fabric Remodeling after Optic Nerve Injury.

Glaucoma is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disease, characterized by degeneration of the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). There has been little progress in developing efficient strategies for neuroprotection in glaucoma. We profiled the retina transcriptome of Lister Hooded rats at 2 weeks after optic nerve crush (ONC) and analyzed the data from the genomic fabric paradigm (GFP) to bring additional insights into the molecular mechanisms of the retinal remodeling after induction of RGC degeneration. GFP considers three independent characteristics for the expression of each gene: level, variab
