Acute leukaemia is the most common form of childhood cancer. The aim of this paper was to underline the importance of oral manifestations in children with acute leukaemia. The disease and its treatment can directly or indirectly affect oral health. Oral manifestations are gingival inflammation and enlargement. Leukaemic cells are capable of infiltrating the gingiva and the deeper periodontal tissues which leads to ulceration and infection of oral tissues. Gingival bleeding is a common sign in patients with leukaemia. Symptoms include local lymphadenopathy, mucous membrane Petechiae and ecchymo…

HIV-related oral conditions occur in a large proportion of patients, and frequently are misdiagnosed or inadequately treated. Dental expertise is necessary for appropriate management of oral manifestations of HIV infection or AIDS, but many patients do not receive adequate dental care. Common or notable HIV-related oral conditions include xerostomia, candidiasis, oral hairy leukoplakia, periodontal diseases such as linear gingival erythema and necrotizing ulcerative periodontitis, Kaposi's sarcoma, human papilloma virus-associated warts, and ulcerative conditions including herpes simplex virus…

Bulimia nervosa (BN) is an eating disorder frquently accompanied by changes of the hard and soft tissues of the oral cavity and of the salivary glands. Routine dental examination in a 25-year-old woman disclosed oral signs and symptoms characteristic of BN and she was referred for psychiatric evaluation. Oral evaluation of patients suspected of BN is recommended to prevent irreversible damage to the oral and perioral structures.

The oral manifestations of HIV infection are reviewed along with evidence supporting the need for training of health-care professionals in the recognition of oral lesions. The diagnosis, prevalence, pathogenesis, and management of the most common oral lesions observed in HIV infection are described. Oral candidiasis and hairy leukoplakia are two oral lesions that have been demonstrated to have important prognostic significance. The diagnosis and management of periodontal disease in seropositive patients is emphasized, and a preventive protocol for patients at risk for periodontal pathology is …

OBJECTIVE: To provide a comprehensive, literature-based guide to the diagnosis of and the management and referral of patients with oral diseases associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.
DATA SOURCES: The literature was reviewed to identify common oral manifestations of HIV infection, the physical and laboratory findings associated with them, and the therapies used to treat them. The National Library of Medicine's AIDSLINE database was searched using the term "mouth diseases." Additional references were identified from the bibliographies of these articles and related textb…

BACKGROUND: Sensitization to gold in a large group of patients suspected of clinical allergy to this metal has not been reported.
OBJECTIVE: Two hundred patients with symptoms of persistent oral mucosal or cutaneous lesions that were possibly related to allergy to constituents of gold alloys or gold jewelry were patch tested to determine the frequency of sensitization.
METHODS: Patch testing was performed with the European standard series and a series of dental materials including three different salts of gold. A persistent papular reaction to gold-(tri)chloride was considered a positive rea

Disease caused by cytomegalovirus is reported with increasing frequency. Cytomegalovirus is an important pathogen in immunocompromised and immunosuppressed patients. The most common manifestation of cytomegalovirus infection of the gastrointestinal tract including the oral mucosa is ulceration. The role of cytomegalovirus in xerostomia, Sjögren's syndrome, and Kaposi's sarcoma is continuing to be investigated. This article reviews the oral manifestations of cytomegalovirus, including recently reported oral manifestations.

Oral lesions of opportunistic infections and neoplasms are associated with immunosuppression caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). These include oral candidiasis, viral lesions such as warts, herpes simplex, herpes zoster and hairy leukoplakia, as well as Kaposi's sarcoma and an aggressive form of periodontal disease. Many of these can occur as the first clinical signs of HIV infection. Thus, careful oral examination is an important part of the clinical evaluation.

The clinical manifestations of oral reactions to the more commonly prescribed drugs have been presented. These reactions include the following conditions: stomatitis, ulceration and necrosis, opportunistic infections, hemorrhage, gingival hyperplasia, pigmentation, altered salivary function, and altered taste sensation. A patient who complains of any of these signs and symptoms should be thoroughly questioned regarding medication. If an offending drug can be identified, its alteration or elimination, in consultation with the prescribing clinician, will often result in resolution of the clinica

In a systematic study of 100 patients with Crohn's disease, 100 with ulcerative colitis, and of 100 normal subjects matched for age, sex, and denture status, nine patients with Crohn's disease, two with ulcerative colitis, and one normal control were found to have oral lesions. In Crohn's disease, the macroscopic and histological appearances resembled those encountered elsewhere in the gastrointestinal tract and their incidence was related to the activity of the disorder. The lesions in the other two groups were different macroscopically and histologically. Production of salivary IgA was found

The clinical and laboratory findings in two siblings affected with Morquio's syndrome are described. The oral findings, consisting of disturbances in the structure of the enamel in both deciduous and permanent teeth, resemble those of amelogenesis imperfecta, Type 1. Preformed crowns are recommended as the initial treatment, in order to avoid loss of vertical height. The dentist's familiarity with the oral manifestations of Morquio's disease may contribute to the early detection of this condition.
