"Choking game" awareness and participation among 8th graders--Oregon, 2008.

The "choking game" is an activity in which persons strangulate themselves to achieve euphoria through brief hypoxia. It is differentiated from autoerotic asphyxiation. The activity can cause long-term disability and death among youths. In 2008, CDC reported 82 deaths attributed to the choking game and other strangulation activities during the period 1995-2007; most victims were adolescent males aged 11-16 years. To assess the awareness and prevalence of this behavior among 8th graders in Oregon, the Oregon Public Health Division added a question to the 2008 Oregon Healthy Teens survey concerni

Dementia diagnosis in primary care: testing an educational program in Oregon.

The Dementia Diagnosis in Primary Care (DDPC) program was designed to support primary care clinicians and their teams in identifying and diagnosing Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. Here we describe the development, delivery, and evaluation of the DDPC in Oregon, a largely rural state. Primary care clinics across Oregon participated. Of the 28 clinics that enrolled in the program, 14 (50%) were in rural and frontier communities. The program consisted of two cohorts of 8-session, 1-hour webinars for clinic staff members from the enrolled clinics. There was strong attendance at ea

The resource team: A case study of a solitary confinement reform in Oregon.

The continued use of solitary confinement has sparked international public health and human rights criticisms and concerns. This carceral practice has been linked repeatedly to a range of serious psychological harms among incarcerated persons. Vulnerabilities to harm are especially dire for persons with preexisting serious mental illness ("SMI"), a group that is overrepresented in solitary confinement units. Although there have been numerous calls for the practice to be significantly reformed, curtailed, and ended altogether, few strategies exist to minimize its use for people with SMI and his

Psilocybine services in Oregon: a call for awareness among clinical toxicologists.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, Oregon enacted laws regulating the manufacture and use of psilocybine products in licensed facilities for supervised sessions with trained facilitators. COMMENTARY: This commentary summarizes the final rules for psilocybine services in Oregon, and provides perspectives from a clinical toxicologist on some of the issues that may arise. These include the scope of practice for non-clinical facilitators, prevention and management of adverse drug reactions, and toxicological uncertainties with regards to dose considerations for people with mental health and other medical condi

Understanding Oregon's Public Health and Pharmacy Formulary Advisory Committee.

Pharmacists are engaging in a broader array of clinical activities, often necessitating prescriptive authority. As a result, in 2017, Oregon passed House Bill 2397, which directed the Oregon Board of Pharmacy (OBOP) to form the Public Health and Pharmacy Formulary Advisory Committee (PHPFAC). This multidisciplinary committee is charged with making recommendations to the OBOP on a formulary of drugs and devices that a pharmacist may prescribe and dispense pursuant to a diagnosis by a qualified health care provider. The formulary compendium, implemented through statewide protocols, currently pro

Trematode parasites exceed aquatic insect biomass in Oregon stream food webs.

Although parasites are increasingly recognized for their ecosystem roles, it is often assumed that free-living organisms dominate animal biomass in most ecosystems and therefore provide the primary pathways for energy transfer. To examine the contributions of parasites to ecosystem energetics in freshwater streams, we quantified the standing biomass of trematodes and free-living organisms at nine sites in three streams in western Oregon, USA. We then compared the rates of biomass flow from snails Juga plicifera into trematode parasites relative to aquatic vertebrate predators (sculpin, cutthro

Human Adenovirus Associated with Severe Respiratory Infection, Oregon, USA, 2013-2014.

Several human adenoviruses (HAdVs) can cause respiratory infections, some severe. HAdV-B7, which can cause severe respiratory disease, has not been recently reported in the United States but is reemerging in Asia. During October 2013-July 2014, Oregon health authorities identified 198 persons with respiratory symptoms and an HAdV-positive respiratory tract specimen. Among 136 (69%) hospitalized persons, 31% were admitted to the intensive care unit and 18% required mechanical ventilation; 5 patients died. Molecular typing of 109 specimens showed that most (59%) were HAdV-B7, followed by HAdVs-C

Using registry data to characterize the incidence and causes of blindness in Oregon.

In the United States, there is no reliable data to describe the prevalence of eye diseases leading to visual impairment and little active surveillance to address this knowledge gap. Data that is readily available from many state blind registries may provide helpful information on trends and causes of blindness. We analyzed new registrations with the Oregon Commission for the Blind (OCB) and Oregon State Department of Administrative Services (DAS) from 1961 to 2016 for causes of and trends in blindness. Persons with blindness self-refer into the OCB registry and the Oregon State Department of A

Morphological and molecular characterization of Globodera populations from Oregon and Idaho.

An unusual population of cyst nematode was found in soils collected from a Powell Butte, OR field with a cropping history including potato, wheat, other crops, and significant weed presence. These nematodes could not be placed with certainty into any known species and exhibited some unique morphological features in some specimens. Compared with Globodera pallida, the cyst body length was slightly longer and the second-stage juvenile stylet length was slightly shorter. In some individuals, the J2 stylet knob height was greater and the tail annules were more prominent than in G. pallida, and the

Risk factors for traumatic infant death in Oregon, 1973 to 1982.

A retrospective study of risk factors for traumatic infant deaths in Oregon occurring from 1973 through 1982 was performed using vital records and medical examiner records. A total of 146 such deaths occurred during this period. Relative risks were calculated for various risk factors in the study group compared with all Oregon births. Factors found to be significantly associated with all traumatic deaths were low maternal age, out-of-hospital birth, unwed mother, late or no prenatal care, low birth weight, and low maternal education. Race, sex, and birth order were not associated with traumati

Dipetalonema from the eye of a man in Oregon, U.S.A. A case report.

A 21-mm filarial worm appeared suddenly in the anterior chamber of the right eye of a 32-year-old man in western Oregon. By a simultaneous irrigation-aspiration procedure, it was removed alive and only slightly damaged and was identified as a female Dipetalonema in the fourth stage of development. It was the third such case to be reported from western Oregon. In this and one other case the worms were morphologically similar to adult worms identified as Dipetalonema arbuta Highby 1943 from the body cavity of the porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) and a similar species, Dipetalonema sprenti Anderson

Inpatient utilization among Medicaid members with substance use disorder in Oregon.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, substance use disorders (SUDs) remain a critical public health concern with significant morbidity and mortality. Oregon exemplifies this crisis with high rates of illicit drug use and overdose deaths, compounded by systemic challenges like behavioral health workforce shortages. This study's objective is to characterize patterns of acute care utilization and ED visit and admission reasons among Medicaid enrollees with opioid use disorder, stimulant use disorder, and/or unintentional substance overdoses in the Portland metro area. METHODS: We conducted a cross-
