Association between Urine Specific Gravity as a Measure of Hydration Status and Risk of Type 2 Diabetes: The Kailuan Prospective Cohort Study.

Diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes (T2D), poses an unprecedented challenge to global public health. Hydration status also plays a fundamental role in human health, especially in people with T2D, which is often overlooked. This study aimed to explore the longitudinal associations between hydration status and the risk of T2D among the Chinese population. This study used data from the large community-based Kailuan cohort, which included adults who attended physical examinations from 2006 to 2007 and were followed until 2020. A total of 71,526 participants who eventually met the standards were d

Effect of extracellular hyperosmolality on sweat rate during metaboreflex activation in passively heated young men.

Metaboreflex activation augments sweating during mild-to-moderate hyperthermia in euhydrated (isosmotic isovolemic) individuals. Recent work indicates that extracellular hyperosmolality may augment metaboreflex-mediated elevations in sympathetic nervous activity. Our primary objective was, therefore, to test the hypothesis that extracellular hyperosmolality would exacerbate metaboreflex-mediated increases in sweat rate. On two separate occasions, 12 young men [means (SD): 25 (5) yr] received a 90-min intravenous infusion of either 0.9% saline (isosmotic condition, ISO) or 3.0% saline (hyperosm

Of Mice and Men-The Physiology, Psychology, and Pathology of Overhydration.

The detrimental effects of dehydration, to both mental and physical health, are well-described. The potential adverse consequences of overhydration, however, are less understood. The difficulty for most humans to routinely ingest ≥2 liters (L)-or "eight glasses"-of water per day highlights the likely presence of an inhibitory neural circuit which limits the deleterious consequences of overdrinking in mammals but can be consciously overridden in humans. This review summarizes the existing data obtained from both animal (mostly rodent) and human studies regarding the physiology, psychology, and

Egg desiccation leads to dehydration and enhanced innate immunity in python embryos.

The immune system is essential for survival and its performance can vary depending on the physiological state of the organism. Much of the current research into immune function dynamics has examined newborn to adult life stages, despite previous studies documenting physiological responses in embryos to environmental stimuli. While energy balance has been the predominant focus as the driver of changes in immune function, recent research has found a positive relationship between dehydration and innate immune performance in adult reptiles. We expanded the understanding of this relationship by exa

Oral Intake of Hydrangea serrata (Thunb.) Ser. Leaves Extract Improves Wrinkles, Hydration, Elasticity, Texture, and Roughness in Human Skin: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study.

Previously, we reported that the hot water extract of Hydrangea serrata leaves (WHS) and its active component, hydrangenol, possess in vitro and in vivo effects on skin wrinkles and moisturization. We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to clinically evaluate the effect of WHS on human skin. Participants (n = 151) were randomly assigned to receive either WHS 300 mg, WHS 600 mg, or placebo, once daily for 12 weeks. Skin wrinkle, hydration, elasticity, texture, and roughness parameters were assessed at baseline and after 4, 8, and 12 weeks. Compared to the placebo, ski

Variation in the enteric distribution of cryptosporidia in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Clinical observation suggests that the natural history of intestinal cryptosporidiosis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome varies greatly. The relation between clinical, small-bowel functional, and nutritional status and the intestinal distribution of the organism was studied in 41 patients who had acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and cryptosporidiosis and who had undergone both proximal small-bowel and colonic biopsies. Two patterns of enteric cryptosporidiosis were identified: severe clinical disease with malabsorption in patients with cryptosporidia in proximal small-bowel

Effects of carbohydrate-electrolyte solutions with and without L-menthol on hydration and performance recovery following simulated firefighting exercise.

BACKGROUND: Firefighting tasks performed in full protective equipment (PPE) impose extreme thermal and physical strain, providing a model of high-intensity exercise with substantial fluid and electrolyte loss. This study compared the effects of plain water (W), a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (CES), and a menthol-supplemented carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (MCES) on hydration and performance recovery during the first hour of post-exercise recovery. METHODS: Twenty-four male firefighters completed a standardized simulated firefighting protocol in protective clothing. Participants were r

Calf Bioimpedance Analysis: A Novel Approach for Evaluating Hydration Status in Pediatric Dialysis Patients Under High Dialysate Sodium.

INTRODUCTION: Assessment  of  hydration  status  in  pediatric hemodialysis is complicated by dynamic fluid shifts and sodium variability.  Conventional  methods  such  as  clinical  evaluation and  whole-body  bioimpedance  analysis  (BIA)  lack  precision  for individual-level monitoring. This study introduces a calf impedance ratio (ΔZ₁₅ₖₕ / ΔZ₁₅₀ₖₕ) to classify fluid responses and evaluate the impact of high dialysate sodium (143 mEq/L) on fluid dynamics and blood pressure. METHODS: A  cross-sectional  study  was  conducted  involving  14 children aged 5-12 years undergoing maintenance he

Skin Hydration Level as a Predictor for Diabetic Wound Healing: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: In the diabetic foot, the skin may crack and develop fissures, potentially increasing vulnerability to ulceration and infection. Therefore, maintaining adequate skin hydration may be crucial for diabetic wound healing. However, no clinical study has addressed this issue. This study aimed to determine and compare the effect of the skin hydration level on diabetic wound healing with that of the tissue oxygenation level, which is recognized as the most reliable parameter in predicting diabetic wound healing. METHODS: This retrospective study included 263 diabetic patients with forefo

Water limitation modifies vocal performance in California mice: implications for acoustic communication under environmental stress.

In arid environments or during prolonged drought periods, maintaining hydration becomes increasingly challenging, often requiring organisms to reduce investment in costly behaviors. Vocal performance is sensitive to hydration status because systemic dehydration can alter vocal fold mechanics and reduce vocal efficiency. In many mammals, vocalizations are produced when expiratory airflow induces self-sustained vibration of the vocal folds, making this mechanism vulnerable to systemic water imbalance. This study tested whether dehydration alters singing rate and acoustic song parameters in adult

Salt sensitivity of volume and blood pressure in a mouse with globally reduced ENaC γ-subunit expression.

The epithelial Na+ channel (ENaC) promotes the absorption of Na+ in the aldosterone-sensitive distal nephron, colon, and respiratory epithelia. Deletion of genes encoding subunits of ENaC results in early postnatal mortality. Here, we present the initial characterization of a mouse with dramatically suppressed expression of the ENaC γ-subunit. We used this hypomorphic (γmt) allele to explore the importance of this subunit in homeostasis of electrolytes and body fluid volume. At baseline, γ-subunit expression in γmt/mt mice was markedly suppressed in the kidney and lung, whereas electrolytes re

Aquaporin water channels as regulators of cell-cell adhesion proteins.

Aquaporin (AQP) water channels facilitate passive transport of water across cellular membranes following an osmotic gradient. AQPs are expressed in a multitude of epithelia, endothelia, and other cell types where they play important roles in physiology, especially in the regulation of body water homeostasis, skin hydration, and fat metabolism. AQP dysregulation is associated with many pathophysiological conditions, including nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, chronic kidney disease, and congestive heart failure. Moreover, AQPs have emerged as major players in a multitude of cancers where high exp

The efficacy of managing fluid overload in chronic peritoneal dialysis patients by a structured nurse-led intervention protocol.

BACKGROUND: Extracellular volume overload is a common problem in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and is associated with excessive mortality. We determine the effectiveness of treating PD patients with extracellular volume overload by a structured nurse-led intervention program. METHODS: The hydration status of PD patients was screened by bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS). Fluid overload was defined as overhydration volume ≥ 2 L. Patients were classified into Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Groups and were managed by a structured nurse-led intervention protocol that focused on education and motiv

Shiga Toxin-Associated Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome: A Narrative Review.

The severity of human infection by one of the many Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is determined by a number of factors: the bacterial genome, the capacity of human societies to prevent foodborne epidemics, the medical condition of infected patients (in particular their hydration status, often compromised by severe diarrhea), and by our capacity to devise new therapeutic approaches, most specifically to combat the bacterial virulence factors, as opposed to our current strategies that essentially aim to palliate organ deficiencies. The last major outbreak in 2011 in Germany, which

Pulmonary artery pressure as a method for assessing hydration status in an anuric hemodialysis patient - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Setting the dry weight and maintaining fluid balance is still a difficult challenge in dialysis patients. Overhydration is common and associated with increased cardiac morbidity and mortality. Pulmonary hypertension is associated with volume overload in end-stage renal dysfunction patients. Thus, monitoring pulmonary pressure by a CardioMEMS device could potentially be of guidance to physicians in the difficult task of assessing fluid overload in hemodialysis patients. Transient Ischemic Attack: Which Determines Diffusion-Weighted Image Positivity?

AIM OF THE STUDY: Diffusion-weighted image (DWI) of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can reveal high signal lesion in up to 50% of transient ischemic attack (TIA) patients. However, it is not well-known which factors determine developing DWI positivity. In order to answer this question, we analyzed factors relevant to DWI positivity in TIA patients. METHODS: We had 257 stroke patients at a university emergency/neurology wards. They were 140 men, 117 women, mean age 72 (45-88) years. Among them, 24 (9.3%) had TIA (14 men, 10 women, mean age 71 [58-82] years). All patients underwent a 1.5T MRI.
