Enhancing Epidemiology Capacity During the 2014-15 West Africa Ebola Outbreak: An Assessment of the Role of Applied Public Health Epidemiologists.

CONTEXT: In late 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention requested the support of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists to enhance epidemiologic capacity in the West African countries impacted or threatened by an outbreak of Ebola virus disease. In response, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists recruited 36 senior epidemiologists who, collectively, made 45 deployments to West Africa, averaging 42 days each. OBJECTIVE: To assess the self-reported experiences and contributions of the deployed epidemiologists, as well as the role of nonprofit public he

Orchestrating faster access to products of non-profit R&D: a case study of a novel regimen for drug-resistant tuberculosis.

INTRODUCTION: Non-profit product development partnerships (PDPs) have succeeded in bringing nearly 80 new drugs, vaccines and diagnostics for neglected diseases through regulatory approval, but arrangements to ensure they reach patients are unclear since the usual commercial incentives do not apply. We conducted a case study of how unusually fast access was achieved to a new treatment regimen for drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) developed by the TB Alliance (TBA). Over 100 countries procured the regimen in quantities to reach 67% of global demand by 2024, 5 years after first regulatory appr

Complexities of the charitable and philanthropic landscape within Mexico's children's hospitals.

In today's Mexico, approximately 50% of children experience multidimensional poverty, with Indigenous children particularly affected; half of them live in extreme poverty and nearly all lack access to social security. The current political landscape threatens to exacerbate these issues. Reductions in public spending and the dismantling of federal child health programmes are likely to further hinder children's development, well-being and health by limiting access to vital services like childcare, education and healthcare. Children's hospitals in Mexico may increasingly depend on philanthropy an

Rare Disease Drug Repurposing.

IMPORTANCE: Treatments are urgently needed for the more than 9500 rare diseases with no US Food and Drug Administration-approved therapies. Although repurposing can be less time- and cost-intensive compared with novel drug development, hurdles have impeded systematic repurposing. Rare disease nonprofit organizations (RDNPs) are well-positioned to overcome barriers and have spearheaded rare disease repurposing efforts for decades. However, no comprehensive data are available on the state of rare disease repurposing or features of successful efforts. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the state of rare

Text Analysis of Trends in Health Equity and Disparities From the Internal Revenue Service Tax Documentation Submitted by US Nonprofit Hospitals Between 2010 and 2019: Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: Many US hospitals are classified as nonprofits and receive tax-exempt status partially in exchange for providing benefits to the community. Proof of compliance is collected with the Schedule H form submitted as part of the annual Internal Revenue Service Form 990 (F990H), including a free-response text section that is known for being ambiguous and difficult to audit. This research is among the first to use natural language processing approaches to evaluate this text section with a focus on health equity and disparities. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to determine the extent to which t

Medical Research Charities and Biopharmaceutical Companies as Partners in Patient-Centred R&D.

Life science research and development (R&D) companies are all too aware of the importance of patient perspectives but also of the barriers to engaging directly with patients, not least compliance, complex technical and regulatory issues, and the need to meet multifaceted expectations. Medical research charities (MRCs), highly technical and professional organisations, work directly with patients; they represent an expert resource for the science of their field, for disease-related patient advocacy issues and to advise and assist R&D companies in devising meaningful trials. Supervising Employees With Criminal History: An Exploratory Study of Manager Strategies and Perceptions.

This study examined supervisory strategies for employees with criminal history from the perspective of supervisors with experience in overseeing formerly incarcerated employees. The primary goal of the study was to determine strategies used by supervisors that can be integrated into management training and disseminated to employers interested in hiring individuals with criminal history. For that purpose, 10 semistructured interviews were conducted with supervisors at Pioneer Human Services (Washington State, USA), a large nonprofit social enterprise that operates businesses employing justice i

Cancer diagnosis and treatment in working-age adults: Implications for employment, health insurance coverage, and financial hardship in the United States.

The rising costs of cancer care and subsequent medical financial hardship for cancer survivors and families are well documented in the United States. Less attention has been paid to employment disruptions and loss of household income after a cancer diagnosis and during treatment, potentially resulting in lasting financial hardship, particularly for working-age adults not yet age-eligible for Medicare coverage and their families. In this article, the authors use a composite patient case to illustrate the adverse consequences of cancer diagnosis and treatment for employment, health insurance cov

Bridging Needs and Expectations of Individuals With Physical Disabilities and Community Services Stakeholders for the Cocreation of an Adapted Physical Activity Platform in Virtual Reality: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity supports the health and well-being of individuals with physical disabilities. Despite the significance of engaging in physical activity, barriers faced by individuals with disabilities, such as limited access to adapted facilities and lack of transportation, can restrict their participation. Community organizations play a role in addressing these challenges, but virtual reality (VR) also offers a way to diversify adapted activities. In some situations, VR can help overcome the resource limitations of organizations by providing accessible, engaging, and highly pers

Lessons from the pandemic: Responding to emerging zoonotic viral diseases-a Keystone Symposia report.

The COVID-19 pandemic caught the world largely unprepared, including scientific and policy communities. On April 10-13, 2022, researchers across academia, industry, government, and nonprofit organizations met at the Keystone symposium "Lessons from the Pandemic: Responding to Emerging Zoonotic Viral Diseases" to discuss the successes and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and what lessons can be applied moving forward. Speakers focused on experiences not only from the COVID-19 pandemic but also from outbreaks of other pathogens, including the Ebola virus, Lassa virus, and Nipah virus. A gener

Healthcare experiences of patients with Down syndrome from primarily Spanish-speaking households.

We report on the health care experiences of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) from families who are primarily Spanish-speaking. Data were collected through three methods: (1) a nationally distributed, 20-item survey, (2) two focus groups with seven family caregivers of individuals with DS who self-identified as living in primarily Spanish speaking households, and (3) 20 interviews with primary care providers (PCPs) who care for patients who are underrepresented minorities. Standard summary statistics were used to analyze the quantitative survey results. Focus group and interview transcripts,

Admission Practices And Cost Of Care For Opioid Use Disorder At Residential Addiction Treatment Programs In The US.

The use of acute, short-term residential care for opioid use disorder has grown rapidly, with policy makers advocating to increase the availability of "treatment beds." However, there are concerns about high costs and misleading recruitment practices. We conducted an audit survey of 613 residential programs nationally, posing as uninsured cash-paying individuals using heroin and seeking addiction treatment. One-third of callers were offered admission before clinical evaluation, usually within one day. Most programs required up-front payments, with for-profit programs charging more than twice a

Harnessing Generalizable Real-World Ophthalmic Big Data: Descriptive Analysis of the Bodhya Eye Consortium Model for Collaborative Research.

BACKGROUND: Eye care organizations and professionals worldwide are increasingly focusing on bridging the gap between population health and medical practice. Recent advances in genomics and anthropology have revealed that most Indian groups trace their ancestry to a blend of 2 genetically distinct populations: Ancestral North Indians, who share genetic affinities with Central Asians, Middle Easterners, Caucasians, and Europeans; and Ancestral South Indians, genetically distinct from groups outside the Indian subcontinent. Studies conducted among North Indian populations can therefore offer insi

Fighting for menstrual equity through period product pantries.

BACKGROUND: Menstruators facing period poverty often struggle with menstrual hygiene and waste management, which can result in harmful short- and long-term health outcomes such as urinary tract infections, yeast infections, and vulvar contact dermatitis. Research indicates that 42% of menstruators in the United States have difficulty affording period products. Traditional methods of distributing period products through social services may unintentionally undermine menstruators' agency, leading to disempowerment and inefficient resource allocation. Period product pantries are a novel approach a

Bioethical challenges in postwar development aid: The Rwandan case study.

This article considers aspects of a development aid that provides medical support to strengthen pediatric orthopedics in Rwanda. We present part of the Afriquia foundation work, a nonprofit foundation from Poland involved in supporting the medical sector in Rwanda as a sign of global solidarity and the human right to health. The main foundation's activity is the treatment of orthopedic problems among Rwandan citizens. We present a case study of two children under the care of the Afiquia foundation. 11-year-old Seraphine treated due to the consequences of right tibia osteomyelitis and 11-year-o
