We report an unusual case of a young Quarter Horse with a large dental fracture fragment displaced into the maxillary sinus, leaving an oroantral communication that caused food impaction and metaplastic calcification in the sinus and facial deformation with cutaneous fistulation. Oral extraction of a remaining tooth fragment from its alveolus was succeeded by a maxillary sinusotomy for removal of the abnormal sinus contents. Since the oroantral fistula did not heal spontaneously following the placement of a silicone dental prosthesis, minimally invasive transbuccal and transnasal endoscopic ap

Closing a recurrent oroantral fistula (OAF) that occurs at an infected sinus augmentation site is a challenge for clinicians. The recurrent OAF has a detrimental impact on bone regeneration and subsequent implant placement. This case report includes three cases in which sinus graft infection and OAF occurred after maxillary sinus augmentation (MSA). In these cases, treatments to control sinus infection were performed using an otolaryngologist; then, intraoral interventions comprising mucosal flap procedures, bone grafts, and barrier membrane applications were performed 2-5 times by oral surgeo

A systematic treatment plan and an appropriate selection of surgical technique are the critical requirements for an effective closure of oroantral fistula (OAF). A 45-year-old female patient had sinus opening after she underwent a surgical tooth extraction 20 years back. On her frequent visits to the dentists some attempts were made for closure including surgical intervention, only for the lesion to return back. Computerized tomography (CT) scan was taken to rule out any bony extension of a lesion, the CT revealed a 1 × 1 cm radiolucency with a through - through communication from the alveolar

Oroantral fistula (OAF) is a pathologic communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus. It is usually associated with maxillary sinusitis, where drainage of sinus infection is a mandatory step during closure of the fistula. The flap used for closure of OAF should be tension free, broadly based and well vascularized. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of closure of OAF using buccal fat pad (BFP) flap with concomitant endoscopic middle meatal antrostomy for maxillary sinus drainage. Nineteen patients with chronic OAF were included in the study. Closure was perfo

This study evaluated the long term effectiveness of pedicled buccal fat pad (BFP) with or without buccal advancement flap in the closure of oroantral fistula (OAF). A prospective clinical study involving 15 patients with chronic OAF was carried out. All cases were managed with pedicled BFP as the primary or secondary procedure. Cases with doubtful outcome were closed in two layers using BFP along with buccal advancement flap. Cases were followed for 3 months (1, 4, 8 and 12 weeks) to evaluate any postoperative complications such as wound dehiscence, necrosis or infection. Females (66.7%) in th

An oroantral fistula is a complication of the maxillary posterior teeth that can occur after a tooth extraction that affects the maxillary sinus. Improper management may lead to a persistent fistula, which may become chronic. In this case report, platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) was used with a collagen membrane to close a chronic fistula in a single patient. A flap was raised, the oroantral fistula tract was eliminated, and the opening was closed with a resorbable membrane as a first layer and covered with a PRF clot as a second layer. The flap was closed, and the patient was followed up for suture

BACKGROUND: The oro antral fistula (OAF) is an unnatural epithelialized communication between oral cavity and maxillary sinus. It may heal spontaneously but a larger fistula requires surgical intervention. OAF causes excruciating pain, escape of fluids from nose, escape of air from mouth into nose, epistaxis, change in voice due to resonance, purulent discharge in case of chronic OAF, post nasal discharge, popping out of antral polyp into oral cavity and sinusitis. Closure of OAF is strenuous, technique sensitive and challenging.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To compare and evaluate the efficacy of bu

Oroantral fistula (OAF) refers to a permanent connection between oral cavity and maxillary sinus. The extraction of maxillary posterior teeth is the most common reason of OAF. Multiple techniques are available to repair this defect. The most used procedures involving local flaps include buccal flap, buccal fat pad (BFP), and palatal rotating flap. We here present an original technique of management of oroantral fistula with displacement of the root into sinus using BFP.

An oroantral fistula (OAF) is a pathological abnormal communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus which may arise as a result of failure of primary healing of an OAF which can result into the maxillary sinusitis. Therefore, a number of methods are attempted to close this connection using various types of flap or graft. The objective of the research was to evaluate the closure of the oroantral fistula using the buccal advancement flap (BAF), platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and buccal pad of fat. The study comprised 30 healthy patients with oroantral fistulas. Based on the method ut

Bone grafts to the maxillary sinus are often required after closure of an oroantral fistula (OAF) to allow for subsequent implant installation. This report describes a single procedure that closes a large OAF using bone grafting to the involved sinus. This technique involves sinus mucosal lifting via elevating the sinus membrane, which is recovered as a continuous layer by combining the residual sinus membranes with a rotated part of oral mucosa around the OAF. Autogenous bone from the ilium was grafted into the prepared sinus space, and the oral side of the graft was covered by a rotated pala

BACKGROUND: Search of the English literature yielded no studies assessing the chosen dental treatment following surgical closure of oroantral communication/oroantral fistula (OAC/OAF). The purpose of the present study was to assess factors affecting the decision to rehabilitate the posterior maxilla following surgical closure of OAC/OAF.
METHODS: Consecutive patients at a single center. A structured form served to collect the data. The differences between groups (cases with versus cases without restoration) were assessed statistically.
RESULTS: A total of 58/121 responding individuals (62.1%

Unilateral chronic maxillary sinusitis is a possible complication of odontogenic disease or dental treatment and is mainly due to the development of an oroantral fistula (OAF). The management of chronic maxillary sinusitis of dental origin (CMSDO) requires a combined treatment via endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) and intraoral surgical treatment of the odontogenic source. The aim of this study is to present the results of our university hospital unit in the treatment and follow-up of a case series of 34 patients treated with a combined surgical approach for CMSDO due to OAF. All patients were tr

CASE REPORT: We report the clinical course of a patient with a rare iatrogenic surgical complication of transposition of the Parotid duct into the maxillary sinus after tooth extraction.
DISCUSSION: Oroantral fistula occurs most frequently following maxillary molar or premolar extraction. Closure of an oroantral fistula is frequently closed using the buccal mucoperiosteal flap first described by Rehrmann in 1936. Transposition of the Parotid duct is a rare surgical complication of this technique.
CONCLUSION: Differential diagnosis of nonspecific discharge from the nose should take this rare

Mucormycosis is a rare, potentially fatal and opportunistic infection caused by fungi belonging to the order Mucorales. Rhinocerebral, gastrointestinal, pulmonary, cutaneous and disseminated are the different forms of mucormycosis. Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is the most common type and presents as a highly destructive infection in immunocompromised hosts, especially in patients with poorly controlled diabetes. The infection originates in the nasal mucosa owing to fungal inoculation and then spreads to the paranasal sinuses, orbits, orbital apex, cavernous sinuses and brain. Our patient was a 3
