Management of Jaw Fractures in Pediatric Patients Using Orthodontic Appliances: A Case Series.

AIMS: Mandibular fractures are common in pediatric patients due to active lifestyles, with the mandible being the most frequently fractured facial bone. In children, fractures are often greenstick, requiring careful management to avoid disrupting growth and dentition. Conventional treatments, such as intermaxillary fixation (IMF) using arch bars, can be challenging in mixed dentition. This case series explores the use of orthodontic appliances as an alternative approach for managing pediatric mandibular fractures. CASE DESCRIPTION: Three pediatric patients with mandibular fractures were treat

Mechanical effect of different patterns for preparation of orthodontic appliances: An experimental study.

Archwire bending is the key to orthodontic treatment, and multi-time bendings are inevitable during manual and robotic automated bending. The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively evaluate the mechanical effects of the different preparation modes and to compare the mechanical properties of the orthodontic loops in one and multiple bends. Three types of typical stainless steel orthodontic loops (vertical loop, T-loop, and L-loop) were used to quantify the mechanical effect of patterns for preparation by experimental comparison between loops with different bending times by using an orthodon

Sterilizing orthodontic appliances: A systematic review and meta-analysis on the available methods.

Infection control is essential to protect both the doctor and the patient by preventing the spread of infectious diseases. There is no exception in the field of dentistry, particularly in orthodontics, where numerous appliances are used for a variety of functions and also because the mouth cavity has the highest concentration of bacteria of any body part. Through this systematic review, we aimed to assess the various methods of sterilization employed in an orthodontic setting. Using relevant keywords, reference searches, and citation searches, the databases such as PubMed, MEDLINE, Web of Scie

The impact of fixed orthodontic appliances on oral microbiome dynamics in Japanese patients.

Fixed orthodontic appliances are common and effective tools to treat malocclusion. Adverse effects of these appliances, such as dental caries and periodontitis, may be associated with alteration of the microbiome. This study investigated the impact of these appliances on the dynamics of the oral microbiome. Seventy-one patients were selected. Supragingival plaque samples were collected before placement (T0) and six months after placement (T1). Saliva samples were collected at T0 and T1, and then when appliance removal (T2). Microbial DNA was analyzed by 16S rRNA meta-sequencing. The diversity

Fixed appliances orthodontic therapy as a risk factor for caries development: Systematic review.

Orthodontic treatment is often mandatory to improve the patient's health condition. However, the fixed appliance can create additional plaque retention areas, which can increase the risk of caries development. Clinically, one can observe various effects of fixed appliance treatment on caries prevalence. This study aims to analyze to what extent orthodontic therapy with fixed appliances is a risk factor for developing caries in pediatric and adult patients. The keywords used in the search strategy were as follows: ("caries" AND "caries risk" AND "caries experience" AND" "orthodontic treatment"

Utilizing orthodontic appliances to retain and disguise a pediatric maxillary obturator throughout growth.

Unique challenges are encountered when providing an obturator for an adolescent patient. Challenges include the need to modify the obturator throughout growth, engaging the mixed dentition or partially erupted teeth with minimal undercuts, the psychosocial challenges of an actively maturing patient, and the possible need for coincidental orthodontic therapy. This clinical report describes the ongoing rehabilitation of a patient who presented at the age of 10 with a biopsy-confirmed palatal mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Incorporating orthodontic brackets for retention of innovative adjustable obtur

[The Ball Abutment: new orthodontic applications for fixed and removable appliances. Case series].

Widely used, especially for supra-implant solutions, the indication of attachments is now extended to orthodontics. The objective of this series of cases was to describe three clinical situations in which attachments on miniscrews have been adapted to orthodontics, leading to the development of a new connection: the ball attachment or Ball Abutment making it « semi removable » anchoring devices which until now had to be fixed. A series of three cases is presented. For each case, the miniscrew(s) already in place during the active orthodontic treatment phase is (or are) used with a palatal devi

Design and manufacturing of patient-specific orthodontic appliances by computer-aided engineering techniques.

Orthodontic treatments are usually performed using fixed brackets or removable oral appliances, which are traditionally made from alginate impressions and wax registrations. Among removable devices, eruption guidance appliances are used for early orthodontic treatments in order to intercept and prevent malocclusion problems. Commercially available eruption guidance appliances, however, are symmetric devices produced using a few standard sizes. For this reason, they are not able to meet all the specific patient's needs since the actual dental anatomies present various geometries and asymmetric

Emergencies in orthodontics. Part 1: Management of general orthodontic problems as well as common problems with fixed appliances.

Fixed appliance treatment is a popular treatment modality with a burgeoning increase in the numbers of children and adults realizing the benefits that can be gained. Appliance breakage is an unavoidable nuisance which is at best inconvenient, and at worst may result in significant pain or discomfort for the patient. General dental practitioners (GDPs) should have the practical knowledge of how to provide timely and appropriate orthodontic 'emergency treatment'. This will significantly reduce the sometimes considerable inconvenience and discomfort for both the patient and his/her parents, and t

Reduction of mandible fractures with direct bonding technique and orthodontic appliances: two case reports.

Intermaxillary fixation (IMF) with the arch bars or looped wires has been widely used to treat mandible fractures. However, manipulation of these appliances takes time and the medical staff is endangered by wire stabbing injuries. A modified method, the direct bonding technique combined with orthodontic appliances, simplifies the IMF concept to overcome these problems. It is faster, safer and easier to apply while the response of patients, with respect to treatment results, ease of the living and oral hygiene is more favorable. This report presents two cases of mandible fractures treated accor
