Functional appliances are frequently used in the treatment of Class II division 1 malocclusions, either in isolation or, more commonly, before a course of fixed appliance therapy. Extensive speculation and investigation into the precise mode of action of these appliances has recently focused on their growth-restraining effect on the maxilla, their growth-enhancing effect on the mandible and dentoalveolar and soft tissue effects. The different types of functional appliances are described in this article, with emphasis placed on practitioners adopting a component approach to design. A checklist

Functioning as an artificial labiolingual duct, the IPE device provides excellent guidance for dental eruption during intermediate finishing or retention treatment. The IPE device can be relined with flexible, transparent elastomer of good mechanical quality, thereby making the appliance individually adaptable to any clinical setting, via study casts or directly in the mouth.

Myofunctional appliances are customarily used to treat Class II malocclusions in growing children to alter their growth. Functional appliances are widely accepted to enhance skeletal relationships in the short term efficiently. It utilizes muscular forces by muscles to make dental and skeleton modifications. The myofunctional appliance might be removable or fixed. The variation of mode and method of action depends on the design, but the forces created by the muscles' stretching provide their effect. According to research, the effectiveness of functional appliances as a therapy for Class II mal

OBJECTIVE: To validate our hypothesis that there would be significant differences in treatment outcomes, including cephalometric values, degree of root resorption, occlusal indices, and functional aspect, between cases treated with labial and lingual appliances.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four consecutively treated Class II cases with extractions and lingual appliance were compared with 25 matched cases treated with extraction and labial appliance. Orthodontic treatment outcomes were evaluated by cephalometric analysis, peer assessment rating, and an objective grading system (OGS). Additio

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate patients' and parents' perception of removable, fixed rigid, and fixed hybrid functional appliances and to compare their impacts on anxiety and discomfort during treatment in different age groups and genders.
METHODS: Data were gathered by means of a questionnaire that included items presumed to be associated with orthodontic compliance. A self-administered questionnaire was used to quantify patients' and parents' perceptions. Three groups were formed regarding the type of functional appliance used: fixed rigid (Functional Mandibular Advancer, FMA), fixed hybrid (Forsus

AIMS: The management of Class II malocclusion is challenging in growing patients, where the objective is to modulate skeletal growth rather than dentoalveolar correction only. Fixed functional appliances (FFA) have become a cornerstone in treating Class II malocclusions, offering an efficient alternative for mandibular advancement in non-compliant patients. However, one side effect of FFA is the proclination of lower incisors, which may require careful management through biomechanical control.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study analysed the impact of altering the angle of FFA attachment

It is of interest to compare two myofunctional appliances (frankal appliance and twin bloc) and two fixed orthodontic appliances (PowerScope and Forsus) in management of class II div 1 malocclusion. A total of 56 Class II division 1 malocclusion patients indicated for treatment with myofunctional appliances and fixed functional appliances were randomized. They were equally divided among frankal appliance (n=14), twin block appliance (n=14), PowerScope (American Orthodontics) (n=14), Forsus (3M Unitek Corp) groups (n=14). Skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of all appliances were compared. SNB i

The effect of the Twin Block functional orthodontic appliances is mostly dento-alveolar with small skeletal effect. There are certain clinical indications where functional appliances can be used successfully in class II malocclusion, e.g., in a growing patient. The use of these appliances is greatly dependent on the patient's compliance, and they simplify the fixed appliance phase. The use of functional jaw orthopedics, at the correct time during growth, can ultimately result in achieving a broad beautiful smile, an excellent functional occlusion, a full face with a beautiful jaw line and late
