Nonsurgical orthodontic correction of facial asymmetry by condylar remodeling and mandibular repositioning following occlusal cant correction with microimplants: a case report.

Recently, the demand for correcting facial asymmetry has been increasing, even when the extent of asymmetry is small. This case report describes nonsurgical orthodontic treatment for facial asymmetry in a 13-year-old female patient, facilitated by moving the deviant mandible to the nondeviated side after correcting for relevant dental compensation using microimplants. Mandibular repositioning was attempted using intermaxillary elastics between the microimplants placed into each jaw and guided by resin that was bonded on the maxillary first molar of the deviated side. To enhance mandibular move

Digital setup accuracy for moderate crowding correction with fixed orthodontic appliances: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the accuracy of a semi-automatic 3D digital setup process in predicting the orthodontic treatment outcome achieved by labial fixed appliances. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-five adult patients (18 to 24 years old) with class I malocclusion and moderate crowding were prospectively enrolled and received treatment on both jaws through the straight-wire technique. Prior to treatment commencement, a semi-automatic digital setup simulating the predicted treatment outcome was performed for each patient through Orthoanalyzer software (3Shape®, Copenhagen, Denmark) to obtain the

Orthodontic correction of acquired open bite with TMJ degeneration: A retrospective study of outcomes and stability.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Newly developed temporary anchorage devices (TADs) serve a strong orthodontic anchorage to intrude molars for correction of anterior open bite (AOB). We measured cephalometric changes in skeletal open bite patients which developed subsequently to temporomandibular joint disorders with bilateral point contacts at terminal molars. METHODS: We retrospectively recruited 32 patients who had been treated their TMD before orthodontic correction (overbite: -3.14 ± 1.86 mm). Partial orthodontic appliances were used to intrude posterior teeth using TADs until positive OB obtained (T

[A new method to orthodontically correct dental occlusal plane canting: wave-shaped arch].

OBJECTIVE: To introduce a technique of second order wave-shaped arch wire to orthodontically treat dental occlusal plane canting (DOPC) with left-right interactive anchorage, and to test its clinical efficacy. METHODS: Among the permanent dentition malocclusion patients who showed no obvious facial asymmetry, we screened for patients who showed anterior occlusal plane canting (AOPC) after routine orthodontic examination, treatment planning, MBT fixed appliance installation and serial arch wires alignment. Each patient had been clinically appraised in frontal view by 2 orthodontists and the pa

Innovative biomechanics for orthodontic correction of torsiversion of maxillary central incisor caused by twin mesiodens.

Mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary teeth found in the premaxilla between the two central incisors. Early and proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan is critical in eluding the extent of treatment needed. This case report presents the successful orthodontic and esthetic management of an unusual case of Indian origin with twin mesiodens in the maxillary arch causing torsiversion and attrition of mandibular incisors due to occlusal trauma.

Transmaxillary osteogenesis distraction combined with orthopedics and orthodontics in the correction of a severe retrusion of the upper maxilla.

A patient having adequate records and diagnosed as having Binder syndrome is presented. Nasomaxillary hypoplasia requires a definitive treatment, use of bone grafts, upper maxillary osteotomies, and advancement or a combination of both. Bone grafts can be reabsorbed, and complete maxillary advance modifies normal occlusion in a certain way, because the posterior sector is not compromised. The aim of this case treatment is to create a new osseous surface that makes the eruption of the permanent dental pieces easier and gives the correct skeletal position to the upper maxilla with distraction os

Correction of an adult Class III malocclusion through regaining of orthodontic space and an implant restoration.

This case report describes the interdisciplinary treatment of a 23-year-old female with Class III malocclusion and a missing maxillary left second premolar. Treatment alternatives were discussed, and the selected treatment plan was presented to illustrate a way to gain space for the premolar implant restoration and correct Class III relationship through maxillary molar retraction followed by maxillary total arch protraction with a palatal temporary skeletal anchorage device. Esthetic anterior alignment and functional occlusal rehabilitation was achieved, and facial balance was maintained at th

Craniofacial Deformities in Patients With Beta-Thalassemia: Orthodontic Versus Surgical Correction-A Systematic Review.

Rapid blood cell turnover and bone marrow expansion caused by beta-thalassemia (βT) result in craniofacial and dentoalveolar anomalies. This report presents a systematic review of the literature over the past 50 years on orthodontic and surgical considerations in the management of βT-affected patients. Seventeen publications encompassed 24 patients, 11 male individuals and 13 female individuals, 7 to 43 years of age. Eleven patients underwent only surgical treatment, eleven combined orthodontic-surgical treatment, and 2 orthodontic treatment. Surgical treatment primarily addressed typical maxi

Case report MM. Surgical-orthodontic correction of bilateral buccal crossbite (Brodie syndrome).

A surgical approach to treatment was required for this 35-year-old patient to correct a malocclusion characterized by a bilateral buccal crossbite. Surgical procedures included a LeFort 1 osteotomy to reduce maxillary width and correct the vertical asymmetry. The mandible was lengthened with a bilateral sagittal split osteotomy. Treatment options for the nongrowing patient are limited in the correction of severe skeletal disharmonies.

The community and orthodontic care. Part II: Community-perceived importance of correcting various dentofacial anomalies. Part III: Community perception of the importance of orthodontic treatment.

Part II. A professionally-managed telephone survey was undertaken to assess the community-perceived importance of correcting various dentofacial anomalies. The sample included 505 respondents, aged eighteen and over, from metropolitan and non-metropolitan households across the state of Victoria. The sample distribution had a 95 per cent confidence limit with a 5 per cent margin of error and closely matched the known population distributions for age, sex and geographical location. This article forms part two of a series. It was found that the correction of functional problems such as "difficult

Correlation analysis of eye and lip canting correction after bimaxillary orthognathic surgery and orthodontic treatment.

BACKGROUND: Facial asymmetry is a frequent indication for orthognathic surgery. Vertical discrepancies such as eye and lip canting strongly influence perceived facial balance. While orthognathic surgery effectively repositions skeletal structures, the extent of soft tissue canting correction remains uncertain. METHODS: This retrospective study included 25 patients who underwent bimaxillary orthognathic surgery followed by orthodontic treatment between 2017 and 2023. Patients were classified into three groups: eye + lip canting (Group A, n = 10), Eye canting, lip canting, soft tissue chin devi

Mini-implant assisted orthodontic correction of lip and occlusal cant of a young adult: A case report.

Patients seek orthodontic treatment to correct unesthetic and asymmetric smiles because even a minimal cant of 4 is well perceived by a layperson. This case report describes a nonsurgical orthodontic management of iatrogenic occlusal canting in a 22-year-old female, who developed it during a previous orthodontic treatment for an impacted canine. The iatrogenic cant was corrected by the intrusion of the left mandibular segment followed by extrusion of left maxillary segment using mini-implants. Mini-implants were inserted in the mandibular left buccal segment (the first between canine and premo

Elastics Selector Gauge as Orthodontics Device Applied to Inter-Maxillary Traction during Malocclusion Correction.

Elastics are the simplest device that can be used during a class correction in orthodontics, and despite the simplicity of a latex band, they are very effective and powerful. The resultant inter-maxillary force affects not only the teeth, but even the mandibular position, and consequently the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). The purpose of our work is to simplify the use of elastics, and to reduce the amount of inventory for orthodontists, because there is a lot of merceology available on the market, and different ways of using the elastics. The use of elastics in clinical practice is based on
