OBJECTIVES: Maxillary impactions are seen as an orthognathic surgical movement that increases the number of complications. The aim of this paper is to research literature on this topic, with special attention to avoiding of complications.
METHODS: A systematic review was carried out according to the PRISMA guidelines. The PROSPERO registration has been performed. A risk of bias assessment was carried out with RevMan and graphics were created. A total of 20 articles were included in this systematic review.
RESULTS: Some interesting and conclusive facts about maxillary impactions. Relapses are

OBJECTIVE: To compare the postoperative position of the maxilla with the surgical treatment objectives (STO) in bimaxillary orthognathic surgery for evaluating the surgical accuracy and investigating the pattern and cause of the discrepancy.
METHODS: Patients undergoing conventional bimaxillary orthognathic surgery by a single oral and maxillofacial surgeon were enrolled. Utilizing the superimposition of preoperative and postoperative computed tomography images, the actual amounts of positional change of both the maxillary central incisor and first molars were compared with those of STO. All

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative bleeding after orthognathic surgery is a rare but life-threatening complication. Maxillary surgery is the main cause of bleeding, after which excessive epistaxis can occur until the 10th postoperative day. Due to the risk of secondary bleeding, the patient discharge process may be complicated for both the patient and clinician. Thus far, no studies have explored massive intra- and postoperative bleeding in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery. Therefore, this study was performed to determine the prevalence of postoperative secondary bleeding and its correlation

Although orthognathic surgery has now become a routine part of oral and maxillofacial surgery practice, concern and apprehension about major jaw surgery continues to plague the minds of many orthodontists faced with the prospect of referring their patients for surgery. Like all surgery, complications also occur with orthognathic procedures, most of which can be prevented by thorough planning and careful surgery. In this article a brief overview of the potential complications associated with orthognathic surgery is presented for the benefit of orthodontists involved in the management of patient

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest that orthognathic surgery can improve facial age and personality profiling. The authors expand on these findings by assessing the role of patient facial profile and sociodemographics on perceived changes following surgery.
METHODS: Preoperative and postoperative images of 65 patients operated on by a single surgeon were randomly assorted and rated by 30 respondents. Patient facial profiles were categorized as convex, concave, or straight. Paired and unpaired t tests were used to assess differences preoperatively and postoperatively. Multivariate regression a

In contemporary orthognathic surgery planning, the genium/chin constitutes an important part that contributes to the maxillofacial profile. The aesthetics of the lower face is affected by the position of the genium which makes reestablishment of genial morphology an essential component. It is hence necessary to evaluate the genium objectively on its individual merit, and any discrepancy is addressed accordingly. This review presents an overview of contemporary genioplasty techniques, their applications, and considerations on stability, osteosynthesis, complications, and the future developments

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this article is to review the recent literature on orthognathic surgery for treatment of malocclusion and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The discussion outlines the refinements of the procedure and advances in technology.
RECENT FINDINGS: Maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) may be performed for complex malocclusion and OSA. Although orthodontic management followed by MMA has been the gold standard in managing complex cases, the surgery first approach for treatment of malocclusion has increased in popularity because of decreased treatment time and improved patient

AIM OF STUDY: The aim of this study was to describe and classify indemnity claims of treatment injuries in orthognathic surgery received by the Danish Patient Compensation Association (DPCA) during a 25-year time span from 1993 to 2018 in order to illustrate the wide scope of treatment injuries, patient's complaints, suffering, and compensation.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All indemnity claims associated with orthognathic surgery were reviewed accessing the DPCA database including osteotomies performed in association with orthodontic treatment only, thus excluding access osteotomies for tumor surge

BACKGROUND: Modern orthognathic surgery (OGS) was established on the basis of contributions from multidisciplinary centers worldwide. This study reports the history and evolution of OGS at the Chang Gung Craniofacial Center (CGCC) and identifies the lessons learned from 35 years of experience.
METHODS: The total number of OGS procedures managed by the CGCC multidisciplinary team between 1981 and 2016 was determined. The database of the senior author (Y.-R.C.) was reviewed for consecutive OGS procedures performed between 2003 and 2016. A literature review was also performed to retrieve the con

INTRODUCTION: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is an obsessive-compulsive related disorder characterized by an individual's preoccupation with the appearance of at least 1 perceived physical flaw. The bodily concerns held by individuals with BDD are largely unnoticeable, if at all, to other individuals. Those living with BDD are compelled to engage in repetitive behaviors or cognitive acts that interfere with daily function and activities. Despite the high prevalence of BDD in patients who seek cosmetic procedures (ie, as high as 1 in 5 such patients) and the availability of validated screening

Although patients with cleft lip and palate often present with poor maxillary growth because of intrinsic and iatrogenic factors, the surgical influence of lip revision surgery, palatal fistula repair, and pharyngeal flap procedures remains uncertain in contrast to that of primary cleft lip repair and palatoplasty. Therefore, this study aimed to reveal factors inhibiting maxillary growth and inducing later orthognathic surgery. A retrospective analysis was conducted on the data of patients with cleft lip and palate who underwent a series of treatments at Keio University Hospital from 1990 to 2

Orthognathic surgery is a procedure that allows oral and maxillofacial surgeons to resolve jaw asymmetry issues and restore function, esthetics, and balance. Orthodontics plays a major part in the pre-surgical and post-surgical phases, thus necessitating a multidisciplinary approach. Certain skeletal discrepancies may remain despite correction with routine growth modification and camouflage treatment, or they may not qualify for these treatments. These skeletal discrepancies are addressed through orthognathic surgeries such as the Le Fort I osteotomy for the maxilla and the bilateral split sag

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After studying this article, the participant should be able to: 1. Identify skeletal differences that are treated with orthognathic surgery; describe the goals of orthognathic surgery; and understand modern virtual surgical planning of orthognathic movement of the mandible, maxilla, and chin. 2. Appreciate the surgical principles of maxilla- versus mandible-first surgery, and orthognathic surgery before orthodontic correction; and understand when an osseous genioplasty may be beneficial, and the potency of this bony movement. 3. Appreciate the utility of fat grafting as an

BACKGROUND: The main objective of contemporary orthognathic surgery is to correct dentofacial deformities. Nonetheless, many adjunct procedures to enhance the esthetic outcome in orthognathic surgical cases have been successfully incorporated to improve patient satisfaction. The authors report our preliminary experience of performing simultaneous orthognathic surgery with Asian double eyelid suture method blepharoplasty in the same surgical setting.
METHOD: This case series report includes all 19 consecutive cases presenting to the Chang Gung Craniofacial Center for combined orthognathic surg
