BACKGROUND: Global childhood myopia is rising, with longer axial length increasing ocular risks. Orthokeratology corrects vision and may slow axial elongation via peripheral defocus, but the efficacy of newer OK lens designs and long-term persistence of effect remain to be comprehensively evaluated.
METHODS: Adhering to PROSPERO and PRISMA 2020, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library were searched through 18 April 2025. Included studies prospectively compared axial-length changes in children (6-18 years) with OK versus single-vision spectacles, soft contact lenses, or co

Myopia has become a leading cause of visual impairment globally, with a rapidly increasing prevalence among children, particularly in urbanised areas of East and Southeast Asia. High and pathologic myopia can lead to irreversible complications, including retinal detachment, glaucoma, and myopic maculopathy. This narrative review synthesises current and emerging strategies for myopia control as of 2025, integrating evidence from optical, pharmacological, behavioural, and surgical domains. Multifocal contact lenses, orthokeratology, and defocus-incorporated spectacles are effective in modulating

PURPOSE: To compare the efficiency of orthokeratology (OK) and defocus-incorporated multiple segment (DIMS) lenses in myopia control in children.
METHODS: This prospective study involved 540 subjects (7-14 years) categorized into three groups: DIMS lenses (180 cases), OK lenses (180 cases), or single-vision spectacles (SVS) (180 cases). After a one-year follow-up, changes in axial length (AL) and differences among the groups were analyzed. The subjects were further divided into a low myopia degree subgroup (LM, -1.50 D ≤ SE ≤ -0.50 D), a moderate myopia degree subgroup (MM, -3.00 D ≤ SE < -1.

PURPOSE: To compare peripheral defocus, higher-order aberrations (HOAs), and contrast visual acuity (CVA) in myopic children wearing orthokeratology (OK) lenses and multifocal soft contact lenses (MSCLs) designed with highly addition.
METHODS: This is a prospective, nonrandomized, controlled study. Subjects at 8 to 13 years of age with spherical equivalent refraction from - 1.00 to - 5.00 dioptres (D) were included in the OK group (n = 30) and MSCL group (n = 23). Relative peripheral corneal defocus (RPCD) and relative peripheral refraction (RPR) were measured before and after wearing lenses.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the safety of overnight orthokeratology (OK) wear and explore whether factors such as age, refraction and allergic conjunctivitis (AC) history were associated with corneal adverse events (AEs) incidence.
METHODS: Medical records of consecutive patients who started OK for myopia correction and continued for more than one year were retrospectively reviewed. Clinical data including sex, baseline age, spherical equivalent refraction (SER), and related medical histories were retrieved. A total of 489 eyes from 260 patients (age: 8-15 years; SER: -1.00 to -6.00 D) were includ

This review discusses the rapid rise of myopia among school-age children in East and Southeast Asia during the last 60 years. It describes the history, epidemiology, and presumed causes of myopia in Asia, but also in Europe and the United States. The recent myopia boom is attributed primarily to the educational pressure in Asian countries, which prompts children to read for long hours, often under poor lighting and on computer screens. This practice severely limits the time spent outdoors and reduces exposure to sunlight and far vision. As a consequence, the eyes grow longer and become myopic.

BACKGROUND: Understanding adherence and discontinuation is essential for evaluating the real-world feasibility of myopia-control strategies. Although dropout is recognised as a concern in adult contact lens wear, its prevalence and causes in paediatric optical myopia-control interventions remain poorly characterised. This study systematically quantified dropout rates and examined reasons for discontinuation across optical modalities used for myopia control in children.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA and registered in PROSPERO (CRD420251177073). PubMed, Sc

This retrospective, nonrandomized cohort study evaluated whether monocular orthokeratology (Ortho-K) combined with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) fumigation was associated with longitudinal ocular outcomes in children with unilateral myopic anisometropia. A total of 101 eligible children were analyzed: 33 in the Ortho-K + Fumigation group, 33 in the Ortho-K group, and 35 in the Spectacle group. The primary outcome was change in axial length (ΔAL) of the initially non-myopic fellow eye. All available post-baseline measurements were analyzed using generalized estimating equations (GEE), with

PURPOSE: Myopia has emerged as a significant public health concern. Recent studies have demonstrated that Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) can effectively decelerate axial length (AL) growth, with eyes possessing smaller back optical zone diameters (BOZD) exhibiting greater effectiveness compared to those with larger BOZD. This study aims to analyze the impact of Ortho-K with varying BOZD.
METHOD: This systematic review involved the retrieval of articles from eight databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, CNKI, Wanfang, Sinomed, and VIP, covering the period from each database's inception

OBJECTIVES: To assess the efficacy of orthokeratology in controlling the rate of myopia progression in children and investigate the factors associated with axial length (AL) growth rate with an average of 48 months of orthokeratology lens wear.
METHODS: As a retrospective study, 84 subjects underwent relatively complete ophthalmologic examinations. After initial lens wear, AL was measured on average every 12 months. The linear mixed-effects model (LMM) was used to compare the differences in AL growth rates at each time interval. The contribution of the independent variables to AL change was a

Myopia occurs in more than 50% of the population in many industrialized countries and is expected to increase; complications associated with axial elongation from myopia are the sixth leading cause of blindness. Thus, understanding its etiology, epidemiology, and the results of various treatment regiments may modify current care and result in a reduction in morbidity from progressive myopia. This rapid increase cannot be explained by genetics alone. Current animal and human research demonstrates that myopia development is a result of the interplay between genetic and the environmental factors.

Myopia has significantly risen in East and Southeast Asia, and the pathological outcomes of this condition, such as myopic maculopathy and optic neuropathy linked to high myopia, have emerged as leading causes of irreversible vision loss. Addressing this issue requires strategies to reduce myopia prevalence and prevent progression to high myopia. Encouraging outdoor activities for schoolchildren and reducing near-work and screen time can effectively prevent myopia development, offering a safe intervention that promotes healthier habits. Several clinical approaches can be employed to decelerate
