Morphological and molecular characterization of Isobinema luisdearmasi sp. nov. (Oxyuridomorpha: Thelastomatoidea: Travassosinematidae) from the mole cricket Gryllotalpa orientalis Burmeister, 1838 (Orthoptera: Gryllotalpidae) in Japan.

Isobinema luisdearmasi sp. nov. (Nematoda: Oxyuridomorpha: Travassosinematidae) is described from the mole cricket Gryllotalpa orientalis Burmeister, 1838 (Orthoptera: Gryllotalpidae) in Kasugai, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The females of I. luisdearmasi sp. nov. are similar to I. flagellocercum Rao, 1958 (type species of the genus) by some morphometric variables overlapping in both species, namely the body length and the comparative length of the oesophagus and tail. The new species can be differentiated from I. flagellocercum by its comparatively slender body and larger eggs. Isobinema luisdear

Geographic variation in body size and tegmen shape of the grasshopper Dichroplus elongatus (Orthoptera: Acrididae) from Central-West Argentina: morphological trait variation along environmental gradients.

How phenotype varies across geographic space constitutes a key question in current evolutionary biology. Species with widespread geographic ranges are helpful models for examining phenotype variation patterns. Here we examined body size and tegmen shape variation in 12 populations of widespread agricultural pest Dichroplus elongatus collected in Central-West Argentina. D. elongatus showed significant phenotypic variation. Combining linear and geometric morphometric techniques reveals differences in body size and tegmen shape between sexes. General linear mixed models (GLMMs) analyses showed th

The Patterns of Altitudinal Gradient Differentiation in the Morphological Traits of Calliptamus italicus (L.) (Orthoptera: Acridoidea) and Their Environmental Driving Mechanisms in the Desert Steppe in the Ili River Basin.

Morphological traits, as core components of functional traits, are fundamental in determining environmental adaptability. However, under climate warming, the adaptive morphological changes and associated ecological risks of locust populations migrating to higher altitudes remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated Calliptamus italicus, the dominant locust species in the desert steppes of the Ili River Basin, to explore the response patterns of its morphological functional traits along an altitudinal gradient and their relationships with environmental factors. Morphological measurements re

Lethal effects of treatment with a special dimeticone formula on head lice and house crickets (Orthoptera, Ensifera: Acheta domestica and Anoplura, phthiraptera: Pediculus humanus). Insights into physical mechanisms.

The present study provides the first convincing explanation of the mode of action of the medical device NYDA, a special dimeticone (CAS 9006-65-9) formula containing 92% of two dimeticones with different viscosities specifically designed for the physical treatment of head lice infestations (pediculosis capitis) by suffocation. Both, lice (Pediculus humanus) and house crickets (Acheta domestica) treated with this anti-head lice product are knocked out to the status "of no major vital signs" within less than 1 min that in consequence is accompanied irreversibly with the death of the respective i

Bite force transmission and mandible shape in grasshoppers, crickets, and allies is not driven by dietary niches.

Although species evolve in response to many intrinsic and extrinsic factors, frequently one factor has a dominating influence on a given organ system. In this context, mouthpart shape and function are thought to correlate strongly with dietary niche and this was advocated for decades, e.g., for insects. Orthoptera (grasshoppers, crickets, and allies) are a prominent case in this respect because mandible shape has been even used to predict feeding preferences. Here, we analyzed mandible shape, force transmission efficiency, and their potential correlation with dietary categories in a phylogenet

New record and diet of a poorly known frog, Amolops daorum (Amphibia, Anura) from Vietnam.

As a result of our field surveys, a new population of the Dao Frog, Amolops daorum (Bain, Lathrop, Murphy, Orlov & Ho, 2003), was found in Son La Province, northern Vietnam, and its identification was based on molecular and morphological analyses. To date, knowledge about the natural history of this species is scarce, including data on its dietary ecology. Using the stomach-flushing method, we analyzed stomach contents of 132 individuals (81 males and 51 females) of A. daorum. We found 501 prey items (458 invertebrates, one vertebrate, and 15 unidentified items), belonging to 11 insect orders

Biomechanics of hearing in katydids.

Animals have evolved a vast diversity of mechanisms to detect sounds. Auditory organs are thus used to detect intraspecific communicative signals and environmental sounds relevant to survival. To hear, terrestrial animals must convert the acoustic energy contained in the airborne sound pressure waves into neural signals. In mammals, spectral quality is assessed by the decomposition of incoming sound waves into elementary frequency components using a sophisticated cochlear system. Some insects like katydids (or bushcrickets) have evolved biophysical mechanisms for auditory processing that are r

Exaggerated mandibles are correlated with enhanced foraging efficacy in male Auckland tree wētā.

Sexual selection has driven the evolution of weaponry for males to fight rivals to gain access to females. Although weapons are predicted to increase males' reproductive success, they are also expected to incur costs and may impair functional activities, including foraging. Using feeding assays, we tested whether the enlarged mandibles of Auckland tree wētā (Hemideina thoracica) impact feeding activity (the total volume of biomass consumed, bite rate, and number of foraging visits) and foraging behaviour (time spent moving, feeding, or stationary). We predicted that increased head capsule size

Local interneurons associated with the mushroom bodies and the central body in the brain of Acheta domesticus.

Within the central part of the brain in male crickets (Acheta domesticus) 150 local interneurons were recorded intracellularly and consequently stained with either Lucifer Yellow CH or cobaltous sulphide. The shapes of the injected cells were reconstructed from serial sections and drawn to scale using known brain regions as landmarks. Several types of neurons were encountered, which differ in their topographical relationships to the mushroom bodies and the central body. Extensive branching was often found in the calyces or the lobes of the mushroom bodies, within the lateral protocerebral neur

Increases in cyclic 3', 5'-guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) occur at ecdysis in an evolutionarily conserved crustacean cardioactive peptide-immunoreactive insect neuronal network.

At the end of each instar, insects shed their old cuticle by performing the stereotyped ecdysis behavior. In the month, Manduca sexta, larval ecdysis is accompanied by increases in intracellular cyclic 3', 5'-guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in a small network of 50 peptidergic neurons within the ventral central nervous system (CNS). Studies on a variety of insects show that this cGMP response has been associated with ecdysis throughout most of insect evolution. In the mealbeetle (Tenebrio, Coleoptera) and the mosquito (Aedes, Diptera), all 50 neurons showed increases in cGMP immunoreactivity (-

Retrograde amnesia in praying mantis after two successive learning processes.

Learning and memory consolidation was investigated in the mantis Stagmatoptera biocellata, by two successive trainings: a) the attack (A) avoidance training in which animals were not allowed to catch a mobile star, followed by the deimatic reaction (DR) avoidance training of not displaying this defensive response, or b) DR-avoidance training followed by A-avoidance training. The results showed that the presence and the 1 of A-avoidance learning and DR-avoidance learning did not affect the learning of the other training. Total retention of A-avoidance memory was demonstrated when A-avoidance tr

Structural, tribological, and mechanical properties of the hind leg joint of a jumping insect: Using katydids to inform bioinspired lubrication systems.

UNLABELLED: This study investigates the structural properties of the hind leg femur-tibia joint in adult katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae), including its tribological and mechanical properties. It is of particular interest because the orthopteran (e.g., grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids) hind leg is highly specialized for jumping. We show that the katydid hind leg femur-tibia joint had unique surfaces and textures, with a friction coefficient (μ) at its coupling surface of 0.053±0.001. Importantly, the sheared surfaces at this joint showed no sign of wear or damage, even though it had un
