Groundwater contamination by chlorinated hydrocarbons represents a particularly difficult separation to achieve and very little is published on the subject. In this paper, we explore the potential for the removal of chlorinated volatile and non-volatile organics from a site in Bedfordshire UK. The compounds of interest include trichloroethylene (TCE), tetrachloroethylene (PCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethylene (DCE), 2,2-dichloropropane (DCP) and vinyl chloride (VC). The separations were first tested in the laboratory. Microfiltration membranes were of no use in this separation. Nanofiltration membran

UV-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) effectively degrade N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) passing through reverse osmosis (RO) units within advanced treatment trains for the potable reuse of municipal wastewater. However, certain utilities have observed the re-formation of NDMA after the AOP from reactions between residual chloramines and NDMA precursors in the AOP product water. Using kinetic modeling and bench-scale RO experiments, we demonstrate that the low pH in the RO permeate (∼5.5) coupled with the effective rejection of NH4+ promotes conversion of the residual monochloramine (NH2

Municipal wastewater reuse is an essential strategy to address global water scarcity. However, its expansion is often constrained by reverse osmosis (RO) membrane scaling at high recovery. Achieving high RO recovery is critical for inland facilities to directly reduce the volume of concentrate requiring disposal. Conventional ion exchange (IX) pretreatment removes scaling ions and helps increase RO recovery, yet its reliance on chemicals produces additional salty spent regenerants that add to the RO concentrate burden, further complicating brine management challenges for inland wastewater reus

OBJECTIVE: Chronic Interstitial Nephritis in Agricultural Communities (CINAC) causes major morbidity and mortality for farmers in North-Central province (NCP) of Sri Lanka. To prevent the CINAC, reverse osmosis (RO) plants are established to purify the water and reduce the exposure to possible nephrotoxins through drinking water. We assessed RO plant maintenance and efficacy in NCP.
METHODS: We have interviewed 10 RO plant operators on plant establishment, maintenance, usage and funding. We also measured total dissolved solids (TDS in ppm) to assess the efficacy of the RO process.
RESULTS: M

Recent studies demonstrate growing interest in supervisory systems based on open architectures, but existing implementations report fragmented combinations of functions and validation evidence. This study developed and functionally validated an open four-layer SCADA-based supervisory architecture for an experimental reverse osmosis (RO) system. Eleven commercial off-the-shelf sensors were integrated through ESP32-based acquisition, MQTT communication, a Raspberry Pi/Flask edge server, SQLite persistence, and a browser-based human-machine interface (HMI). Validation combined historian analysis,

BACKGROUND: Standard reverse osmosis systems for hemodialysis operate at 60-75% recovery rates, wasting 25-40% of feed water as brine. This inefficiency poses a critical challenge in water-scarce regions like Morocco, where freshwater availability is projected to fall below 500 m³ per capita by 2030.
METHODS: This study assessed all 437 dialysis centers across Morocco, analyzing current reverse osmosis system capacity, water rejection rates, and operating hours to calculate the potential benefits of switching to high-efficiency systems with rejection rates below 15%.
RESULTS: Upgrading to hi

The treatment and management of landfill leachate is challenging due to its complex and variable composition. To comply with regulations, reverse osmosis (RO) is applied as an advanced treatment for highly polluting leachate, considering its satisfying removal efficiencies. Still, operational drawbacks such as membrane fouling and concentrate management limit the full promotion of RO technology for leachate purification. This study presents the technical performance of a full-scale RO facility located at the Hamici landfill in Algeria. Leachate characteristics were assessed over 24 months from

A novel combination of forward osmosis (FO) process with coagulation/flocculation (CF) (FO-CF) has been experimentally conceived for the treatment and reuse of textile wastewater. FO is employed to spontaneously recover water from the wastewater via osmosis and thus effectively reduces its volume with a dramatically enhanced dye concentration. CF is then applied to precipitate and remove dyes from the FO concentrated stream with much improved efficiency and reduced chemical dosage. The FO-CF hybrid system exhibits unique advantages of high water flux and recovery rate, well controlled membrane

Among the main restrictions for the implementation of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for removal of micropollutants present in reverse osmosis (RO) brines of secondary effluents account the quenching performed by background organic and inorganic constituents. Natural organic matter (NOM) and soluble microbial products (SMP) are the main effluent organic matter constituents. The inorganic fraction is largely constituted by chlorides and bicarbonate alkalinity with sodium and calcium as main counterions. The quenching influence of these components, separately and their mixture, in the trans

A submerged anaerobic membrane bioreactor with forward osmosis membrane (FO-AnMBR) was operated at 25 °C for the treatment of synthetic wastewater. As the experiment progressed, the water flux reduced due to the membrane fouling and the increasing salinity in the reactor, and achieved at around 3.5 LMH in one cycle. It was worth noting that the level of salinity in the reactor was not a concern in terms of inhibition or toxic effects on the biological processes. The FO-AnMBR process exhibited greater than 96% removal of organic carbon, nearly 100% of total phosphorus and 62% of ammonia-nitroge

A field reverse osmosis system was used to isolate dissolved organic matter (DOM) from two lacustrine and two riverine surface water sources. The rejection of DOM was on the order of 99% and did not vary significantly with pressure. A simple mass balance model using a single measured value of rejection predicted the concentration within the closed-loop isolation system. The effect of operating pressure and solution flux on mass recovery of DOM was evaluated in laboratory and field trials. Under controlled laboratory conditions, >99% of a lacustrine DOM could be accounted for. A fraction of the

This article examines the scientific basis for using humic acids for the chemical stabilization of mineralized water prior to reverse osmosis. The need to develop alternative approaches to water pretreatment is due to the limited effectiveness of traditional antiscale reagents at high mineralization, as well as their potential environmental risks and the likelihood of secondary contamination of water systems. The article focuses on the mechanisms of interaction between humic acids and Ca2+ and Mg2+ hardness ions, which are mediated by complexation with carboxyl and phenolic functional groups.

Using constructed wetlands, produced waters from oil fields (i.e., waters that have been in contact with oil in situ) can be treated to enhance water quality for irrigation purposes, or subsequent discharge to receiving aquatic systems. In produced water containing elevated levels of salt (i.e., brackish-produced waters), the ability to decrease the conductivity of the produced water may influence potential reuse of the water for irrigation purposes. The objectives of this research were (1) to determine the efficacy of a pilot-scale hybrid reverse osmosis (RO)-constructed wetland system for tr

Due to high phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) content, human urine has often proven to suitable raw material for fertiliser production. However, most of the urine diverting toilets or male urinals dilute the urine 2 to 10 times. This decreases the efficiency in the precipitation of P and stripping of N. In this work, a commercial fertiliser blend was used as forward osmosis (FO) draw solution (DS) to concentrate real diluted urine. During the concentration, the urea in the urine is recovered as it diffuses to the fertiliser. Additionally, the combination of concentrate PO43-, reverse Mg2+ flux f

Forward osmosis (FO) offers a promising route for urine concentration and nutrient recovery, yet inorganic scaling under high water recovery remains a significant challenge. This study systematically investigated scaling during FO treatment of synthetic fresh urine (SFU) and synthetic hydrolysed urine (SHU) over three consecutive cycles to 80% water recovery. SFU exhibited moderate flux decline (~14.4 → 4-5 LMH), with minimal hydraulic resistance from sparse calcium-deficient Ca-P deposits (Ca:P ≈ 1.2; ACP/OCP-like). In contrast, SHU caused severe cumulative scaling, progressively reducing flu

The recent development of fabricating thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes by utilizing two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) nanosheets has drawn significant attention due to their potential to enhance membrane performance. The current work focuses on synthesizing 2D nickel-based MOF nanosheets by exfoliating their 3D pillared layered MOF counterpart and then decorating the polyamide (PA) layer of the TFN membranes with different concentrations of the nanosheets. All modified TFN membranes exhibited improved pure water flux (> 50% for the TFN membrane with the highest nanosh
