Constant plasma volume and colloid osmotic pressure after infusion of albumin 20%: A secondary analysis.

Aberrant elimination patterns after intravenous infusion of albumin 20% may predispose to persistent vascular overload or hyper-oncoticity. In the present report, the frequency of deviating elimination patterns was studied by visual examination followed by calculations of the volume and albumin kinetics over 5 hours in 86 volunteers and clinical patients who received 3 mL/kg albumin 20% over 30 min (mean, 231 mL). Constant and virtually unchanged plasma volume expansion (i.e., steady state) developed after 21% of all infusions and developed most often during surgery (64%) but rarely in volunte

Blood Pressure Lowering and Sodium-Glucose Co-transporter 2 Inhibitors (SGLT2is): More Than Osmotic Diuresis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This is an update of data regarding changes in blood pressure using sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) for the treatment of diabetes. The mechanism of blood pressure lowering by SGLT2i was thought to be due to their osmotic diuretic effects. New data, however, has emerged from meta-analyses and studies of people with impaired kidney function demonstrating similar or greater magnitudes of blood pressure reduction in the absence of significant glycosuria. Potential additional mechanisms are proposed and reviewed. RECENT FINDINGS: Two separate meta-analyses in

Influence of osmotic pressure changes on the opening of existing cracks in 2 intervertebral disc models.

STUDY DESIGN: An experimental hydrogel model and a numerical mixture model were used to investigate why the disc herniates while osmotic pressure is decreasing. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of decreasing osmotic pressure on the opening of cracks in the disc. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: In the degeneration process, the disc changes structure (i.e., cracks occur, and osmotic pressure decreases). Disc herniation typically develops when hydration declines, but, on the other hand, it is said that the anulus of a highly hydrated disc has a high risk of rupture. We hypothesized that disc

Formulation and process optimization of multiparticulate pulsatile system delivered by osmotic pressure-activated rupturable membrane.

In this study, a multiparticulate pulsatile drug delivery system activated by a rupturable controlled-release membrane (Eudragit(®) RS) via osmotic pressure (with NaCl as the osmogent) was developed and characterized for omeprazole, omeprazole sodium, and propranolol HCl which have different water solubilities. Multiparticulates in pellet form for incorporation with or without the osmogent were manufactured by three methods and then used to coat a polymeric membrane. Results demonstrated that drug/osmogent-containing pellets manufactured by the extrusion/spheronization method with incorporatio

Osmotic Pressure-Actuated Hydrogel Patch for Passive Sweat Extraction and Visual Sweat Glucose Monitoring at Rest.

Wearable biosensors enable real-time, non-invasive detection of biomarkers in human sweat, providing valuable information for health monitoring, and are regarded as a research focus for next-generation personalized healthcare devices. However, several significant challenges remain, such as efficient sweat extraction and the inherent instability of natural enzymes. Herein, a visual hydrogel patch designed for sedentary populations (e.g., the elderly) that operates based on an osmotic pressure-driven passive sweat extraction strategy is designed for sweat glucose detection. The hydrogel patch co

Role of spinal V1a receptors in regulation of arterial pressure during acute and chronic osmotic stress.

Vasopressinergic neurons in the paraventricular nucleus project to areas in the spinal cord from which sympathetic nerves originate. This pathway is hypothesized to be involved in the regulation of mean arterial pressure (MAP), particularly under various conditions of osmotic stress. Several studies measuring sympathetic nerve activity support this hypothesis. However, the evidence that spinal vasopressin influences MAP under physiological or pathophysiological conditions in conscious animals is limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate, in conscious rats, if the increases in MAP d

Increased plasma colloid osmotic pressure facilitates the uptake of therapeutic macromolecules in a xenograft tumor model.

Elevated tumor interstitial fluid pressure (TIFP) is a characteristic of most solid tumors. Clinically, TIFP may hamper the uptake of chemotherapeutic drugs into the tumor tissue reducing their therapeutic efficacy. In this study, a means of modulating TIFP to increase the flux of macromolecules into tumor tissue is presented, which is based on the rationale that elevated plasma colloid osmotic pressure (COP) pulls water from tumor interstitium lowering the TIFP. Concentrated human serum albumin (20% HSA), used as an agent to enhance COP, reduced the TIFP time-dependently from 8 to 2 mm Hg in

The short-term effects of increasing plasma colloid osmotic pressure in patients with noncardiac pulmonary edema.

We infused hyperoncotic albumin (25 or 50 gm of a 50% solution) into patients with noncardiac pulmonary edema (adult respiratory distress syndrome [ARDS]) to evaluate its effect on the transmicrovascular flux from blood to pulmonary edema fluid of two radiotracers--111In-DTPA (mol wt 504) and 125I-human serum albumin (HSA) (mol wt 69,000). Two groups of patients were studied--one with a modest increase in permeability of the pulmonary alveolocapillary membrane to 125I-HSA (group 1) and another with a large increase in permeability to 125I-HSA (group 2). We used furosemide, when necessary, to m

Towards a load bearing hydrogel: A proof of principle in the use of osmotic pressure for biomimetic cartilage constructs.

Cartilage defects occur frequently and can lead to osteoarthritis. Hydrogels are a promising regenerative strategy for treating such defects, using their ability of mimicking the native extracellular matrix. However, commonly used hydrogels for tissue regeneration are too soft to resist load-bearing in the joint. To overcome this, an implant is being developed in which the mechanical loadbearing function originates from the osmotic pressure generated by the swelling potential of a charged hydrogel, which is restricted from swelling by a textile spacer fabric. This study aims to quantify the re

Model-guided design of lymphatic drug delivery systems using osmotic pressure, viscosity and lymph node size.

Metastatic lymph nodes (LNs) represent a major barrier to effective drug delivery in cancer therapy. To address this challenge, a lymphatic drug delivery system (LDDS) enabling direct intranodal administration has been developed. In LDDS, drug transport and retention are governed by formulation osmotic pressure and viscosity; however, optimization strategies according to LN size and therapeutic objectives remain unclear. Here, we established a quantitative framework that integrates mathematical modeling with machine and deep learning to describe and predict intranodal drug kinetics as a functi

Tonicity and colloid osmotic pressure drive microvascular recovery from low volume hypotensive resuscitation from hemorrhagic shock.

Hypertonic saline solution containing 7.5% sodium chloride provides rapid intravascular volume expansion during severe hypovolemic shock, reducing the total fluid required to restore perfusion. Unlike traditional large-volume crystalloid resuscitation, which dilutes circulating blood components, hypertonic saline mobilizes intracellular and interstitial fluids into the vascular space, improving perfusion with minimal infusion volume. This strategy is particularly valuable in military and emergency settings where rapid stabilization and limited fluid availability are critical. In this study, we

Efficacy of different bioactive glass S53P4 formulations in biofilm eradication and the impact of pH and osmotic pressure.

AIM: The challenging properties of biofilm-associated infections and the rise of multidrug-resistant bacteria are prompting the exploration of alternative treatment options. This study investigates the efficacy of different bioactive glass (BAG) formulations - alone or combined with vancomycin - to eradicate biofilm. Further, we study the influence of BAG on pH and osmotic pressure as important factors limiting bacterial growth. METHOD: Different BAG S53P4 formulations were used for this study, including (a) powder (<45 μm), (b) granules (500-800 µm), (c) a cone-shaped scaffold and (d) two pu

Osmotic Pressure Gradient-Induced In-Plane Dual Orientation: A Versatile Strategy for Ultrastrong, Anti-Swelling Gradient Hydrogels.

Emerging ultrastrong hydrogels hold promise for various applications but often suffer from swelling-induced fragility in wet environments, limiting practical utility. Herein, we report an osmotic pressure gradient-mediated in-plane self-orientation (OPG-ISO) strategy to fabricate ultrastrong, anti-swelling dual self-oriented gradient (DSOG) hydrogels. This approach relies on interfacial diffusion-complexation between concentrated low-molecular-weight (LMW) polycations and a mixture of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and polyanions. The concentrated LMW polycations complex with the polyanions to fo

Full-Scale Multistage Pressure-Retarded Osmosis for Osmotic Energy Generation: Optimization of Specific and Net Energy Production.

Salinity gradient energy, also known as blue energy, is a clean and renewable option for electricity generation with no direct CO2 emissions. Among the available technologies, pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) stands out, although its large-scale implementation is not yet economically viable, so predictive models are essential to assess its real potential. In the present work, a multistage PRO system of up to three stages, with one-three hollow-fiber membrane modules (HFMMs) arranged in series per stage, was simulated and the operating conditions were optimized. The model accounts for axial pres

Electrorotation--a new method for investigating membrane events during thrombocyte activation. Influence of drugs and osmotic pressure.

The measurement of the spin of cells in rotating high-frequency electric fields ('electrorotation') make possible the investigation of dielectric membrane properties of single cells. This method was applied to membrane permeability changes accompanying thrombocyte activation and compared with light-scattering data. Describing the dielectric behavior of platelets by a single-shell model and assuming a sufficiently low membrane conductivity of 1 X 10(-7) S/m we found for nonactivated platelets a membrane capacity of 5.5 mF/m2 and the conductivity of the internal medium was estimated to be 0.12 S

The effects of varying volumes of crystalloid administration before cesarean delivery on maternal hemodynamics and colloid osmotic pressure.

The value of intravenous crystalloid administration in preventing spinal-induced hypotension in the parturient has recently been questioned. Also, the association between increasing crystalloid volume and decreasing postpartum colloid osmotic pressure (COP) raises concern regarding the risk of maternal and fetal pulmonary edema. To study the dose-response effect of varying amounts of crystalloid volume prior to spinal anesthesia, we measured maternal hemodynamic variables and maternal and fetal COP in three groups of healthy parturients receiving spinal anesthesia for elective cesarean deliver
