Lateral and medial tibial plateau angles in normal dogs. An osteological study.

OBJECTIVES: To measure lateral and medial tibial plateau angle values in isolated canine tibiae and to compare lateral and medial tibial plateau angle values between dogs based on sex and breed. METHODS: Tibiae of 90 dogs from 24 different breeds were used. Photographs were taken of the medial and lateral aspects of the tibiae for measurement of the medial and lateral tibial plateau angles. Additionally, the medial tibial plateau angle was measured from radiographs of the tibiae. Two-way analysis of variance was used to test the effects of side, sex and breed on the medial and lateral tibial

Anatomy and prevalence of atlas vertebrae bridges in a Kenyan population: An osteological study.

Atlas bridges are bony outgrowths over the third segment of the vertebral artery. They may exist as incipient, incomplete, or complete bridges, converting the groove into a deep sulcus, incomplete, or complete foramen respectively. These bridges and their associated foramina display bilateral and sex differences in their prevalence and type. Occurrence of these bridges may predispose to vertebrobasilar insufficiency and Barre-Lieou syndrome. The coexistence of lateral and posterior bridges as well as side predilection is not clear in either sex. Their relative occurrence may also point to some

Historical trends and future key insights in osteology research: A global scientometrics and visual analysis.

BACKGROUND: Osteology plays a central role in anatomical, biological, and clinical sciences. However, a comprehensive understanding of its global research landscape, historical development, and emerging trends has been lacking. This study aimed to fill that gap by conducting a scientometrics and visual analysis of bone tissue research over the past 190 years. METHODS: A bibliometric study was conducted using Scopus, Web of Science All Collection, and PubMed. Publications were included if they focused on the structure or function of bones and were peer-reviewed articles. Variables included pub

Osteology of the coronoid process with clinical correlation to coronoid fractures in terrible triad injuries.

BACKGROUND: Terrible triad complex elbow fracture-dislocations are represented by elbow dislocations associated with fractures of the coronoid and radial head. Published literature has focused on classifying coronoid fractures by their radiographic morphology on plain x-ray images and computed tomography imaging. No study has specifically related native coronoid osteology to in situ fracture morphology. We identified 3 distinct bony regions of the coronoid, (medial, intermediate, and lateral ridges) with correlation to common fracture patterns associated with terrible triad injuries. METHODS:

Skull osteology, neuroanatomy, and jaw-related myology of the pig-nosed turtle Carettochelys insculpta (Cryptodira, Trionychia).

The osteology, neuroanatomy, and musculature are known for most primary clades of turtles (i.e., "families"), but knowledge is still lacking for one particular clade, the Carettochelyidae. Carettochelyids are represented by only one living taxon, the pig-nosed turtle Carettochelys insculpta. Here, we use micro-computed tomography of osteological and contrast-enhanced stained specimens to describe the cranial osteology, neuroanatomy, circulatory system, and jaw musculature of Carettochelys insculpta. The jaw-related myology is described in detail for the first time for this taxon, including m.

[Osteocytes and the pathways of mechanical homeostasis optimization from the point of view of functional osteology].

The aim of this work was to determine, on the basis of the results of authors' own research and literature data, the main pathways of osteocyte (OC) influence on the mechanical homeostasis of the skeleton. The following pathways of reorganization of the architecture of bone structures are postulated: at the ultrastructural level without direct cell participation, through the bone matrix synthesis by osteoblasts and OC, through bone matrix resorption by osteoclasts and OC, the latter being able to resorb the surrounding mineral and organic matrix both separately, and conjointly. This reorganiza

Description of the adult skeleton and developmental osteology of the hyperossified horned frog, Ceratophrys cornuta (Anura:Leptodactylidae).

The adult skeleton and tadpole chondrocranium of the leptodactylid frog, Ceratophrys cornuta (Ceratophryinae), are described in detail, including the ontogenetic development of the chondrocranium and the ossification sequence of the skeleton. The chondrocranium of the carnivorous larvae is unique in lacking a frontoparietal fontanelle and possessing a complete dorsal roof of cartilage. Furthermore, the chondrocranium is extremely robust, particularly those elements involved in the feeding mechanism; these include large palatoquadrate cartilages, stout Meckel's, supra-, and infrarostral cartila

Prevalence of the Sphenoidal Emissary Foramen in a Chilean Osteological Sample: Anatomical and Surgical Implications.

Background: The sphenoidal emissary foramen (SEF) is an inconstant foramen of the sphenoid bone that facilitates venous communication between the pterygoid venous plexus and the cavernous sinus. Understanding its prevalence and laterality is crucial to preventing vascular injury during skull base procedures. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 133 adult Chilean dried skulls. Each specimen was examined both internally and externally to record SEF presence and laterality. Three independent observers performed the assessments under direct lighting, achieving excellent

Decision trees for combining morphological traits and measurements of the skull for osteological sex estimation.

Forensic anthropologists commonly estimate osteological sex using separate metric and morphological analyses, without integrating both data types into a single statistical model. Combining data types into one classification model has the potential to increase sex classification accuracies for the skull. Therefore, the present study seeks to improve sex classification accuracies for the skull by combining morphological and metric variables using decision trees. The main objectives are to (1) generate multiple decision trees that combine metric and morphological variables, (2) compare the classi

Genetic Diagnostics in Routine Osteological Assessment of Adult Low Bone Mass Disorders.

CONTEXT: Many different inherited and acquired conditions can result in premature bone fragility/low bone mass disorders (LBMDs). OBJECTIVE: We aimed to elucidate the impact of genetic testing on differential diagnosis of adult LBMDs and at defining clinical criteria for predicting monogenic forms. METHODS: Four clinical centers broadly recruited a cohort of 394 unrelated adult women before menopause and men younger than 55 years with a bone mineral density (BMD) Z-score < -2.0 and/or pathological fractures. After exclusion of secondary causes or unequivocal clinical/biochemical hallmarks of

Unusual osteological findings in sacred relics from the LESJE monastery in central Serbia.

An adult male skeleton was submitted to the Department of Anatomy at the University of Belgrade for evaluation. It was believed to represent the remains of a second to third century Christian saint from the Lesje Monastery in central Serbia. Examination of the remains revealed an old crush fracture of a thoracic vertebra and an unusual, probably congenital, malformation of the atlanto-occipital joint with deformation of the left occipital condyle and resultant narrowing of the foramen magnum. Although the occipital malformations were most likely congenital, they may still have caused, or contr

Osteological, biomolecular and geochemical examination of an early anglo-saxon case of lepromatous leprosy.

We have examined a 5th to 6th century inhumation from Great Chesterford, Essex, UK. The incomplete remains are those of a young male, aged around 21-35 years at death. The remains show osteological evidence of lepromatous leprosy (LL) and this was confirmed by lipid biomarker analysis and ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis, which provided evidence for both multi-copy and single copy loci from the Mycobacterium leprae genome. Genotyping showed the strain belonged to the 3I lineage, but the Great Chesterford isolate appeared to be ancestral to 3I strains found in later medieval cases in southern Britai

Osteological features in pure-bred dogs predisposing to cervical spinal cord compression.

Relative to body size, midsagittal and interpedicular diameters of the cranial and caudal aspects of cervical vertebral foramina (C3-C7) were found to be significantly (P < 0.05) larger in small breeds than in large breeds and Dachshunds, and also larger in Dachshunds (P < 0.05) than in large breeds. This condition increases the risk for spinal cord compression resulting from relative stenosis of the cervical vertebral foramina, especially in large dogs, and this is also exacerbated by the typical shape of the vertebral foramina (i.e. dorsoventrally flattened cranially and bilaterally narrowed

Known unknowns and the osteological paradox: Why bioarchaeology needs agent-based models.

OBJECTIVE: This paper demonstrates computational modeling's value as a tool for mapping the impact of hidden variables and evaluating the accuracy of statistical methods in bioarchaeology. MATERIALS: As a working example, this paper presents an agent-based model of a 1,000-person cohort of individuals who can form an unspecified skeletal lesion at any age between birth and ten years and enter a simulated cemetery at the end of their lives. Skeletal lesions either have no effect on mortality risk (scenario 1) or are associated with doubled mortality risk (scenario 2). METHODS: The agent-based

Evaluation of lesion burden in a bone-by-bone comparison of osteological and radiological methods of analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate differences in lesion identification in skeletal remains with respect to bone type and method of analysis. MATERIALS: 212 mostly 19th century adult skeletons from St. Bride's Church in London. METHODS: Using a standard protocol, an osteologist evaluated each set of remains for lesions. A radiologist used the same system to examine radiographs of the crania, humeri, pelves, tibiae, and femora. RESULTS: Osteological analysis noted more lesions per bone type. All bone types examined showed positive, statistically significant correlations between the number of lesions ide

Osteological pathology in a Humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) and Fin (Balaenoptera physalus) whale skeleton.

The Natural History Collections, Bergen Museum, The University of Bergen, Norway, houses a large collection of Baleen whale skeletons within which one mature Fin (Balaenoptera physalus) and one juvenile Humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) whale skeleton exhibit notable osteological pathologies that are reported in this brief communication. The Humpback skeleton has a large lesion on the maxilla characterised by loss of bone and remodelling. The lesion would appear to be a healing injury caused by trauma to the area of the gums and adjacent soft tissue. This specimen also exhibits numerous locali

The osteology and affinities of Eotyrannus lengi, a tyrannosauroid theropod from the Wealden Supergroup of southern England.

Eotyrannus lengi Hutt et al., 2001 from the Lower Cretaceous Wessex Formation (part of the Wealden Supergroup) of the Isle of Wight, southern England, is described in detail, compared with other theropods, and evaluated in a new phylogenetic analysis. Eotyrannus is represented by a single individual that would have been c. 4.5 m long; it preserves the anterior part of the skull, a partial forelimb and pectoral girdle, various cervical, dorsal and caudal vertebrae, rib fragments, part of the ilium, and hindlimb elements excluding the femur. Lack of fusion with regard to both neurocentral and sa
