Radiophosphate bone scans readily disclosed osteoid osteomas in 20 symptomatic patients, including nine patients whose radiographic findings had been negative. In five of the nine patients adjuvant radiogallium imaging was performed, and four showed a disproportionately low uptake relative to radiophosphate. When this occurs, osteoid osteoma can be distinguished from subacute osteomyelitis, which is particularly helpful if the radiograph is equivocal. Radiophosphate bone imaging's generally accepted excellent sensitivity in disclosing obscure symptom-producing focal bone disorders makes it the

This retrospective study aimed to evaluate patients with similar clinical and radiological features of diaphyseal intramedullary osteoid osteoma, an enigmatic location subtype. Sixteen patients (11 males and 5 females) with an average age of 12.3 years at the time of presentation were reviewed. The lesion was located in the tibia unilaterally in 10 patients, bilaterally in three, and in the femur unilaterally in three. Diagnosis was established based on the typical clinical presentation of OO and the identification of nidus on computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI),

We present a case of a relatively common benign tumor that was a diagnostic dilemma because of its atypical appearance in multiple imaging modalities. Our patient was a 22-year-old man who presented with complaint of three months of shin pain with running. The radiographically demonstrated sclerotic lesion in his right tibia initially was thought most likely to be a stress fracture, but on further evaluation, it had features that suggested a subacute osteomyelitis or Brodie's abscess with focal sequestra. It was in fact, biopsy proven to be an osteoid osteoma with multiple, closely adjacent ni

A benign bone lesion osteoid is characterized by sclerotic bone interface with a central nidus and pain at night which can be influenced by salicylates. When located on vertebrae or ribs it may cause non-structural scoliosis. Authors describe a case of 11-year old girl suffering from pain in lumbar spine at night, with left-side non-structural scoliosis which was unsuccessfully treated by physical therapy. Subsequently she was handled by radical resection of the L5 pedicle on the right side where osteoid osteoma was revealed by means of CT and later verified by histology. Unfortunately, minor

Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone tumor commonly affecting young individuals, with a rare occurrence in older adults. It typically presents with night pain relieved by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and is characterized radiographically by a small, radiolucent nidus surrounded by reactive sclerosis. We present a 70-year-old female patient with persistent right hip pain, initially diagnosed as arthritis, who underwent total hip arthroplasty. Preoperative imaging findings were inconclusive, showing edema and degenerative changes without a definitive lesion. Histopathological examination of

Osteoid osteoma (OO) is a benign bone neoplasm consisting of a central prostaglandin-secreting nidus surrounded by a zone of reactive sclerosis. The diagnosis is suspected in children and young adults with longstanding nighttime pain that is relieved by salicylates or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Early studies suggested that computed tomography had a higher sensitivity and specificity in the diagnosis of OO compared to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). More recent literature suggests MRI done with dynamic postcontrast imaging to be equal to or slightly better at detecting the nidus of

BACKGROUND: An osteoid osteoma (OO) is a benign bone neoplasm that typically occurs in the long bone diaphysis. We found only 8 cases of OOs of the skull base in the literature, and none of them were located in the clivus.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 44-year-old female patient with a history of 2 previous transsphenoidal surgeries with partial removal of an OO of the clivus at another hospital, 11 and 4 years ago, presented to our department with recurrent progressive left-sided headache and facial pain over the past 6 months, which were aggravated at night. A new computed tomography (CT) scan of the

Intra-articular osteoid osteoma (OO) is a rare and difficult diagnosis. We report the case of an 11-year-old boy who presented with inflammatory monoarticular arthritis in the left elbow. This monoarthritis was resistant to all types of treatment. He had an OO, diagnosed late because the first symptoms developed subsequent to the ablation of a wart in the same elbow and were suggestive of arthritis.

Osteoid osteoma is the most common bone-producing tumor that typically presents with "throbbing night pain" and that improves dramatically with use of low-dose salicylates. Few cases of pelvic osteoid osteoma have been reported, and most have involved patients younger than age 30. Surgical excision classically has been the treatment of choice, but, recently, less invasive modalities, including radiofrequency ablation, have begun to supplant surgical management of osteoid osteoma, resulting in a decrease in the need for definitive surgical diagnosis and treatment. We present a rare case of oste

Osteoid osteoma is a benign tumor of bone. It affects teenagers and young adults and classically involves the diaphysis of long bones. A juxta-articular case of osteoid osteoma involving the distal epiphysis of the tibia misdiagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging and correctly addressed by computed tomography scan and bone scans is presented. In the present case, because the location of the disease was juxta-articular, arthroscopy was used to remove the tumor. Our results show that this technique can be used in the treatment of such cases.

An osteoid osteoma is typically a benign bone tumor affecting young adult males, often presenting with nocturnal pain alleviated by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS). It usually manifests as a solitary nidus with surrounding sclerosis. An osteoid osteoma with a multicentric nidus, characterized by multiple nidi, is a rare variant. A 12-year-old girl presented with a one-year history of worsening, nighttime pain in her upper left leg. Plain radiographs revealed two lytic lesions with sclerosis. A computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed two well-defined sclerotic lesions with c

Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone tumor, found in young subjects with typical intense focal pain, nocturnal exacerbation and favorable response to salicylates. Painless osteoid osteomas are rare and their diagnosis is difficult, especially whether their imaging appearance is not typical. We report the case of a 13-year-old boy with a spontaneous painless lesion of the distal phalanx of a toe. The main symptom was a swelling of the distal portion of the toe with an enlargement of its nail. The radiological aspect was not typical. A computed tomography showed a small lucent bone area within a foc

The foot is rarely the focus of osteoid osteoma, and only a few of those cases are related to the fifth metatarsal. The present case demonstrates that atypical symptoms with suspicious findings on plain radiographs that are not associated with trauma must be analyzed carefully to determine the nature of the lesion and perform the precise treatment to obtain and sustain the cure. A 29-year-old man presented to the outpatient clinic with a 2-year history of chronic pain in the lateral aspect of his left forefoot. The onset was not related to trauma, surgery, local infection, osteomyelitis, or an

Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone tumor that appears most frequently in young patients. It is more common in males and it concerns mostly the long bones of the lower limb. A 20-year-old young woman presented to our outpatient department with pain in her left elbow. The symptoms began four years ago. At first, her symptoms were attributed to ulnar neuritis, confirmed by nerve conduction studies. In the following two years, she had undergone two surgical operations for decompression of the ulnar nerve. As a result, she reported poor results, which forced her to take frequently anti-inflammatory d

BACKGROUND: An acetabular location of osteoid osteoma is rare and represents less than 1 % of cases. The purpose of this clinical case report is to highlight the unusual location of osteoid osteoma and the technical difficulty of its removal.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 17-year-old Moroccan Arab boy who presented with pain in his right hip with lameness. The diagnosis of osteoid osteoma was made by imagery and confirmed by histological examination. The treatment consisted of a complete percutaneous resection scanno-guided of the nidus. The evolution was marked by complete healing

Intra- and, respectively, periarticular osteoid osteoma are accompanied by sympathical arthritis which itself can irreversibly destroy the cartilage of the joint. In contrast to other locations, intra- and periarticular osteoid osteoma are rare. Reactive and symptomatic accompanying arthritis may lead to irreversible cartilage destruction especially in chronic courses. Therefore early diagnosis and therapy is crucial. We present a case report and discuss these rare tumors by reviewing the literature.

Background Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone lesion of unknown etiology uncommonly affecting the carpal bones. In the upper extremity, the clinical and imaging picture may be misleading, often mimicking other entities. We present a rare case of a patient with a subchondral osteoid osteoma mimicking a posttraumatic midcarpal synovitis. Case Description A 21-year-old woman presented with persistent pain and swelling of the right wrist. Physical examination revealed swelling and pain on direct palpation over the dorsal aspect of the wrist. Radiographs were normal. Inconclusive computed tomography

Intra-articular osteoid osteoma is rare and difficult to diagnose. We report a 38-year-old woman who presented with an inflammatory monoarticular arthritis in the right ankle in the context of a spondylarthropathy, otherwise well-controlled by leflunomide. This monoarthritis was resistant to all types of treatment. Investigations led to the diagnosis of an intra-articular osteoid osteoma. This original observation is the first description of an osteoid osteoma developing in a patient already known to have inflammatory rheumatism. All previous reported cases were monoarthritis consecutive to th

We present a 13-year-old girl who was referred to our clinic with a 5-month history of right leg pain relieved by salicylates. Initial CT examination demonstrated a lesion in the posterior tibial cortex in keeping with an osteoid osteoma. This was resected and the diagnosis confirmed by histology. However, her pain recurred 2 weeks after the operation and further imaging identified a further nidus in the epiphysis. We present the imaging findings in this unique case of multicentric osteoid osteoma with one nidus located in the epiphysis.
