Anthelmintic effects of forage chicory (Cichorium intybus) against gastrointestinal nematode parasites in experimentally infected cattle.

Two experiments studied the effects of dietary chicory against gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle. In Experiment (Exp.) 1, stabled calves were fed chicory silage (CHI1; n = 9) or ryegrass/clover hay (CTL1; n = 6) with balanced protein/energy intakes between groups. After 16 days, all calves received 10 000 Ostertagia ostertagi and 66 000 Cooperia oncophora third-stage larvae (L3) [day (D) 0 post-infection (p.i.)]. In Exp. 2, calves were assigned to pure chicory (CHI2; n=10) or ryegrass/clover (CTL2; n = 10) pastures. After 7 days, animals received 20 000 O. ostertagi L3/calf (D0 p.i.) and we

Anthelmintic resistance of gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle herds in mid-mountain central France.

Anthelmintic resistance (AR) in gastrointestinal nematodes is insufficiently studied in cattle in many European regions, including France, where only three studies have been conducted in the north-west. This study evaluated the efficacy of benzimidazoles and avermectins in cattle from a mid-mountain region in central France. Faecal egg count reduction tests (FECRT) were performed in 22 groups of 10-25 calves from 16 dairy or beef farms. Each group received either oral oxfendazole (OFZ, 11 groups) or injectable ivermectin (IVM, 11 groups). Faecal samples were collected in a paired study design

Pharmaco-parasitological evaluation of the ricobendazole plus levamisole nematodicidal combination in cattle.

The goals of the current study were to evaluate the potential pharmacokinetic (PK) interactions and the clinical efficacy occurring after the subcutaneous (s.c.) administration of ricobendazole (RBZ) and levamisole (LEV) given both separately and co-administered to calves naturally infected with susceptible gastrointestinal nematodes. The clinical efficacy was shown in two seasons, winter and spring, with predominance of different nematode populations. Groups of 15 calves were treated with RBZ alone, LEV alone and RBZ + LEV combination, and an untreated group was kept as a Control. RBZ and LEV

Occurrence of gastrointestinal parasites in Georgia cattle.

A survey of gastrointestinal nematodes in Georgia cattle was conducted from 1968 through 1973 from actual worm counts from viscera of 145 slaughtered beef cattle or from egg counts made from fecal samples from 3,273 beef and 100 dairy cattle. Beef cattle were grouped as calves, yearlings, and cows. Dairy cattle were grouped as calves, replacement heifers, and cows. Results of fecal examinations positive; 99.5, 99.3, 99.6, and 41.2% of the calves, yearlings, drylot calves, and cows, respectively, were infected with nematodes. Contribution to the Knowledge of Gastrointestinal Nematodes in Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) from the Province of León, Spain: An Epidemiological and Molecular Study.

A study of gastrointestinal nematodes in roe deer was carried out in the regional hunting reserves of Riaño and Mampodre, Province of León, Spain, to provide information on their prevalence and intensity of infection in relation to the sampling areas, age of the animals, and body weight. Through a regulated necropsy of the animals, all of them harbored gastrointestinal nematodes in their digestive tract, with a mean intensity of parasitism of 638 ± 646.1 nematodes/infected animal. Eleven genera were found and 18 species of gastrointestinal nematodes were identified, three of them polymorphic:

The prophylactic effect of ivermectin treatment of calves, three weeks after turnout, on gastro-intestinal helminthiasis.

In two grazing experiments carried out in 1982 and 1983 the prophylactic effect on gastro-intestinal helminthiasis of a single ivermectin treatment of calves 3 weeks after turnout was studied in animals which were turned out early on contaminated pasture and in calves which were turned out late on mown pasture. A single ivermectin treatment 3 weeks after early turnout did not prevent heavy helminth infections. However, such single treatment of calves 3 weeks after a late turnout on mown pasture appears to be a promising way of preventing heavy infections. Late turnout on mown pasture without a

Effects of preventive anthelmintic treatment on acquired resistance to gastrointestinal nematodes in naturally infected cattle.

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of different types of chemoprophylaxis in first season grazing calves on their resistance against a natural reinfection with Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora in the second grazing season. Thirty helminth-naive crossbred calves were randomly divided in three groups of 10 animals. The animals of group B received an ivermectin sustained release bolus on day 0. The calves of group D were treated on days 0 and 56 with a subcutaneous injection of doramectin (0.2 mg kg(-1) BW). Group C was the untreated control group ('immune' co

Use of diagnostic markers to monitor fasciolosis and gastrointestinal nematodes on an organic dairy farm.

A 12-month study was conducted to assess and monitor gastrointestinal tract nematodes and liver fluke in cohorts of cattle on a Scottish organic dairy farm. Various diagnostic markers for helminth parasites of cattle from different age groups were assessed monthly from April 2007 to March 2008. First season grazing stock were subjected to significant challenge from Ostertagia ostertagi nematodes as reflected in serum pepsinogen concentrations, which rose markedly in the second half of the grazing season. In addition, plasma albumin concentrations decreased and faecal egg counts (FEC) increased

Efficacy of doramectin against field nematode infections of cattle in Latin America.

Two studies were conducted, one in Argentina and one in Brazil, to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of doramectin administered subcutaneously at a dose rate of 200 micrograms kg-1 (1 ml per 50 kg) to cattle harboring mixed field infections of gastrointestinal nematodes. In each trial, 20 heifers were randomly allocated to a control or treated group of ten animals each, on the basis of fecal egg counts. Animals in the treated and control groups received an injection of doramectin or saline in the lateral midline of the neck. From 14 to 18 days post-treatment an equal number of animals from eac

Dose confirmation of a novel fixed dose combination injectable (0.2 mg/kg doramectin + 6.0 mg/kg levamisole hydrochloride) against naturally acquired gastrointestinal nematodes in US cattle.

Macrocyclic lactone (ML) resistance in cattle gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) is an increasing problem. Concurrent combination anthelmintic therapy incorporating an existing ML with a second drug class has been proposed to control cattle GINs while slowing the development of ML resistance. Two dose confirmation studies were conducted to investigate the efficacy of a new fixed-dose combination injectable (FDCI) anthelmintic against common cattle GINs known to negatively impact production. The FDCI is formulated with 5 mg/ml doramectin and 150 mg/ml levamisole hydrochloride (HCl). Cattle enrol

On the survival of overwintering bovine gastrointestinal nematode larvae during the subsequent grazing season.

Large numbers of overwintering Nematodirus helvetianus were shown to survive on Maritime marshland pastures throughout the ensuing grazing season, while the numbers of Ostertagia ostertagi and Cooperia oncophora declined rapidly after the first few weeks. It was concluded that pastures carrying heavy overwintering residual infections, particularly of N. helvetianus, may be unsafe for susceptible cattle at any time during the following grazing season.

Identification of compounds responsible for the anthelmintic effects of chicory (Cichorium intybus) by molecular networking and bio-guided fractionation.

Increasing resistance towards anthelmintic drugs has necessitated the search for alternative treatments for the control of gastrointestinal nematode parasites. Animals fed on chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), a temperate (pasture) crop, have reduced parasite burdens, hence making C. intybus a potentially useful source for novel anthelmintic compounds or a diet-based preventive/therapeutic option. Here, we utilized in vitro bioassays with the parasitic nematode Ascaris suum and molecular networking techniques with five chicory cultivars to identify putative active compounds. Network analysis pred

Efficacy of an ivermectin controlled-release capsule against nematode and arthropod endoparasites in sheep.

Five controlled trials were conducted in Germany or in the United Kingdom, using 74 female sheep of merino or Dorset horn breeds, to evaluate the efficacy of an ivermectin controlled-release capsule against naturally acquired or induced infections of gastrointestinal nematodes, lungworms and nasal bot larvae and against incoming infections with gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes. Half of the animals were treated with one ivermectin controlled-release capsule that delivered ivermectin at the rate of 1.6 mg per day for 100 days while the other half remained untreated. Parasites were counte

Effects of low levels of lice and internal nematodes on weight gain and blood parameters in calves in central Texas.

The effects of low levels of both biting and sucking lice, a mixed population of nematodes, and a combination of all these parasites were evaluated in calves held in a barn with no environmental controls in central Texas. Observations at 122 sites on each animal for 16 wk consecutively in 1987 revealed that the largest numbers of all louse species [Haematopinus eurysternus (Nitzsch). Linognathus vituli (L.), and Bovicola bovis (L.)] occurred 3-7 wk after infestation. In 1988 L. vituli populations decreased rapidly after the 3rd wk and B. bovis remained fairly constant for 20 wk consecutively.

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the detection of antibodies to Hypoderma bovis in cattle.

An adaptation of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay has been shown to detect antibodies in the circulation of cattle infected with Hypoderma bovis. Strong positive reactions were obtained from all infected cattle, even those which harboured only one larva. A strong cross reaction was observed in sera taken from cattle infected with H lineatum, but not in cattle infected with Fasciola hepatica or Ostertagia ostertagi.
