Journal of wound, ostomy, and continence nursing : official publication of The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society2026eng
Peristomal skin complications (PSCs) remain a common, costly, and underrecognized challenge in ostomy care, driven by inconsistent education, variable clinical practices, and the absence of standardized terminology and protocols. These complications affect a substantial proportion of people living with an ostomy and are associated with leakage, pain, psychological distress, reduced health-related quality of life (QoL), and preventable health care utilization. To address this global gap, an international panel of ostomy care experts convened as the Peristomal Hygiene Advancement in Skin Educati

AIM: To describe a remote nursing consultation service (Telestoma) and evaluate its effects on ostomy complications.
METHODS: This retrospective observational study analyzed data from 462 patients served by Telestoma (June, 2022-June, 2023). The primary outcome was peristomal skin alteration, and its association with factors such as pouch change interval, stoma-related complaints, and material inadequacy was evaluated. Satisfaction was evaluated with net promoter score (NPS). Telestoma provides structured, synchronous nursing consultations by video call, during which the stoma nurse can adjus

BACKGROUND: Individuals with ostomies experience extensive changes in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and daily routine. Patients and families are typically forced to use trial and error to improve self-management.
METHODS: This is a longitudinal one-group design pilot study of a five-session ostomy self-care curriculum based on the Chronic Care Model to improve HRQOL and self-management for cancer survivors with ostomies. Participants were surveyed to evaluate each session. Multiple instruments were administered to examine outcomes at baseline, post-intervention, and at 6-month follow

BACKGROUND: Ostomy surgery, often required in the treatment of colorectal, bladder, prostate and gynaecological cancers, has profound effects on body image and psychosocial well-being. While previous reviews have examined body image in colorectal cancer patients, no synthesis to date, to our knowledge, has focused on body image across cancer-related ostomy populations.
METHODS: A systematic review methodology was employed, following PRISMA guidelines. Four databases (PsycINFO, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and Web of Science) were systematically searched for peer-reviewed, quantitative studies assessing b

Permanent stoma is an important method often selected in the surgical treatment of colorectal cancer, mainly including but not limited to the sigmoid colon single-lumen stoma after abdominoperineal resection. Since the stoma needs to be retained permanently, preoperative intervention for the stoma, the stoma surgical procedure, prevention and treatment of complications, and long-term postoperative follow-up are all closely related to the patient's quality of life. Under the guidance of the Colorectal Surgery Group of the Society of Surgery, Chinese Medical Association, the Colorectal Tumor Pro

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing enterocolitis and isolated intestinal perforation (IIP) are two different entities that have been often analysed together in the literature. We present our series of IIP cases who received surgical treatment by laparotomy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted with neonates diagnosed of IPP and operated on between 2002 and 2013. We divided the sample into two groups: group O (laparotomy and ostomy) and Group S (laparotomy and primary repair of the perforation). We compared the following variables: mortality, development of complications and

Caring for the adolescent (13-18 years of age) with an ostomy presents multiple challenges. The purpose of this article is to provide strategies to assist the WOC nurse in minimizing the potential impact on growth and development for this age group with an ostomy. This is relevant to the WOC nurse since it is estimated that between 6% and 14% of all adolescents have symptoms of irritable bowel disease, and many will require an ostomy. Thus the WOC nurse will be called upon to provide care to this age group. This article discusses normal adolescent growth and development and provides strategies

PURPOSE: The optimal timing of ostomy closure is a matter of debate. We performed a systematic review of outcomes of early ostomy closure (EC, within 8 weeks) and late ostomy closure (LC, after 8 weeks) in infants with necrotizing enterocolitis.
METHODS: PubMed, EMbase, Web-of-Science, and Cinahl were searched for studies that detailed time to ostomy closure, and time to full enteral nutrition (FEN) or complications after ostomy closure. Patients with Hirschsprung's disease or anorectal malformations were excluded. Analysis was performed using SPSS 17 and RevMan 5.
RESULTS: Of 778 retrieved

BACKGROUND: Many people live with ostomies after life-saving surgery. Ostomy patients often suffer from peristomal dermatitis. Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) has been reported, mostly due to contact allergy (CA) to topical agents.
OBJECTIVES: We present three patients with therapy resistant peristomal dermatitis, suggesting ACD caused by different stoma products.
METHODS: Patch testing was performed with baseline series, additional series, and selected allergens. They were also tested with their own ostomy products as is and separate extracts of the products. Extracts were analysed using

BACKGROUND: Ostomy surgery is associated with a high rate of postoperative complications and poses several theoretical concerns for subsequent total joint arthroplasty (TJA). There is concern that ostomy may negatively impact nutrition or increase risk of known gastrointestinal (GI) complications such as obstruction, constipation, or diarrhea, particularly with the use of postoperative opioids. There is also concern that the open nature of the ostomy may increase the risk of infection. This case series reports outcomes and assesses the risk associated with TJA in patients with previous surgica

OBJECTIVE: To describe how one organization built a business case for a wound, ostomy, and continence (WOC) nurse team expansion.
SETTING: The organization is part of a multihospital system; it is an 862-bed, urban, academic medical center with a gastrointestinal surgery program.
METHODS: The director of nursing and the WOC nurse staff worked collaboratively to build a staffing proposal. Finding a lack of published staffing guidelines for WOC nurses, researchers assessed workload and volume growth, benchmarked internal and external staffing, and conducted a market comparison. The proposal de

UNLABELLED: For patients with an ostomy, a poor fitting appliance may cause leakage, peristomal dermatitis, and frequent appliance changes.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this case study was to report the outcome of fat grafting to augment peristomal soft tissue and improve appliance fit.
CASE STUDY: A 57-year-old woman with a history of Crohn's disease presented with soft-tissue deficiency and uneven contour around her ileostomy site. She was unable to properly fit an ostomy appliance, which resulted in leakage, chronic skin irritation, and frequent appliance changes. The patient underwent 2 round

European journal of pediatric surgery : official journal of Austrian Association of Pediatric Surgery ... [et al] = Zeitschrift fur Kinderchirurgie2012eng
BACKGROUND: An ostomy seems a safe alternative in neonates with an acute abdomen when immediate restoration of bowel continuity is deemed undesirable. Faced with several complications in our center, and the feeling we are not the only center with these complications, we decided to assess the rate and type of complications after both ostomy creation and closure.
METHODS: All data regarding neonates (<30 days of age) who underwent a laparotomy for a suspected abdominal emergency in the period 2000 to 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. These data included demographics such as gender, gestationa
