Age-based life history of Pacific longnose parrotfish Hipposcarus longiceps from New Caledonia.

The Pacific longnose parrotfish, Hipposcarus longiceps, is a medium- to large-bodied scarine labrid that is among the most commonly harvested species in mixed reef fisheries across the Indo-Pacific. Despite its ecological and fisheries importance, assessments of stock status and development of appropriate management strategies for the species have been limited by an absence of biological information. To date, the only detailed studies of the biology of H. longiceps have occurred in tropical regions. This study examined the biology of H. longiceps in southern New Caledonia, towards the southern

A historical vignette. Turbulence around the otoliths. Sappey's hostility and Breschet's defence.

Nowadays, the animosity between medical scholars is seldom apparent. However, during the XIXth century it was not necessarily so. We find an example of this in Sappey's hostility against his colleague anatomist Gilbert Breschet. It concerned the discovery of the otoliths of the inner ear that Breschet attributed to himself. We present here Breschet's defence.

Experimentally induced motion sickness in fish: possible role of the otolith organs.

OBJECTIVE: Although the occurrence of motion sickness is largely attributed to sensory conflict, the reasons for the highly variable inter-individual susceptibility to motion sickness remain unclear. One cause may be asymmetry between otoconial masses in the right and left inner ear. This hypothesis has been supported by experiments in fish under conditions of prolonged weightlessness and parabolic flight. In swordtail fish (Xiphophorus helleri) we examined the extent to which a Coriolis force environment, which has a strong motion sickness-triggering effect, disturbs swimming behaviour or pro

Function of otolith organ in goldfish revealed from analysis of eye movement induced by acceleration.

An otolith organ on ground behave as a detector of both gravity and linear acceleration, and play an important role in controlling posture and eye movement for tilt of the head or translational motion. On the other hand, a gravitational acceleration ingredient to an otolith organ disappears in microgravity environment. However, linear acceleration can be received by otolith organ and produce a sensation that is different from that on Earth. It is suggested that in microgravity signal from the otolith organ may cause abnormality of posture control and eye movement. Therefore, the central nervou

Spatial orientation of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex.

During vestibular nystagmus, optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), and optokinetic afternystagmus (OKAN), the axis of eye rotation tends to align with the vector sum of linear accelerations acting on the head. This includes gravitational acceleration and the linear accelerations generated by translation and centrifugation. We define the summed vector of gravitational and linear accelerations as gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA) and designate the phenomenon of alignment as spatial orientation of the angular vestibuloocular reflex (aVOR). On the basis of studies in the monkey, we postulated that the sp

Space motion sickness.

Space Motion Sickness (SMS) is the malady which frequently occurs shortly after attainment of sustained exposure to hypogravity. It is characterised by a variety of symptoms, which may proceed to nausea and eventually vomiting. Natural adaptation usually occurs if exposure to hypogravity is maintained. The condition appears to be the manifestation of motion sickness that is specific to hypogravity. It is associated with otolith-canal and otolith-eye conflict. SMS may have operational significance in impairing the performance of spacecraft crews. The condition is likely to be amenable to treatm

The effect of stapedectomy on hearing of patients with otosclerosis and Meniere's disease.

To determine new guidelines for stapedectomy in patients with both Meniere's disease and otosclerosis, we studied the position of the saccular membrane and Reissner's membrane in relation to the stapes footplate in eight temporal bones from patients with Meniere's disease. We also reviewed charts of four patients with both otosclerosis and Meniere's disease who had stapedectomy. Histologic and clinical findings were compared with preoperative bone conduction levels at 500 Hz and at high frequencies. We found that the saccular and Reissner's membranes did not contact the stapes footplate ain bo

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is characterized by positional vertigo (brief attacks of rotatory vertigo triggered by head position changes in the direction of gravity) and is the most common peripheral cause of vertigo. There are two types of BPPV pathophysiology: canalolithiasis and cupulolithiasis. In canalolithiasis, otoconial debris is detached from the otolithic membrane and floats freely within the endolymph of the canal. In cupulolithiasis, the otoconial debris released from the otolithic membrane settles on the cupula of the semicircular canal and the specific gravity of

Behavioral and neural responses to high-strength magnetic fields are reduced in otolith mutant mice.

Static high magnetic fields (MFs) interact with the vestibular system of humans and rodents. In rats and mice, exposure to MFs causes perturbations such as head movements, circular locomotion, suppressed rearing, nystagmus, and conditioned taste aversion acquisition. To test the role of otoconia, two mutant mouse models were examined, head-tilt Nox3het (het) and tilted Otop1 (tlt), with mutations, respectively, in Nox3, encoding the NADPH oxidase 3 enzyme, and Otop1, encoding the otopetrin 1 proton channel, which are normally expressed in the otolith organs, and are critical for otoconia forma

Noise-induced damage in the zebrafish inner ear endorgans: evidence for higher acoustic sensitivity of saccular and lagenar hair cells.

The three otolithic endorgans of the inner ear are known to be involved in sound detection in different teleost fishes, yet their relative roles for auditory-vestibular functions within the same species remain uncertain. In zebrafish (Danio rerio), the saccule and utricle are thought to play key functions in encoding auditory and vestibular information, respectively, but the biological function of the lagena is not clear. We hypothesized that the zebrafish saccule serves as a primary auditory endorgan, making it more vulnerable to noise exposure, and that the lagena might have an auditory func

[The influence of otolithic afferentation on the vestibulo-ocular interaction in the patients presenting with an unilateral lesion in a peripheral vestibular neuron].

The objective of the present work was to study the influence of otolithic afferentation on the vestibulo-ocular interaction in 20 patients with vestibular neuronitis (at the stages of decompensation and subcompensation) and in 30 healthy subjects by the electronystagmographic technique. The sinusoidal (program 1) and eccentric (program 2) rotation was applied with the angular velocity of 10 degrees/s (stimulus 1, rotation rate 0.04 Hz), 30 degrees/s (stimulus II, rotation rate 0.12 Hz), 60 degrees/s (stimulus III) and oscillation periods of 18, 6, and 3 s respectively. Recurrent paroxysmal positional vertigo related to oral contraceptive treatment.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a high-prevalence vestibular end-organ disorder caused by the detachment of utricular otoconia which float in the posterior or lateral semicircular canal. In the majority of cases the etiology of BPPV is unknown and it may follow viral infection, vascular disorders or head trauma. BPPV may be recurrent, with some authors demonstrating a correlation between recurrence and female gender. We report herein on ten cases (out of 289 diagnoses of BPPV) of recurrent idiopathic BPPV, occurring in healthy women receiving oral contraceptive treatment, which

[Postural stabilization after otolithic repositioning for posterior semicircular canal canalization].

Today the canal/cupulolithiasic pathogenesis of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) appears well defined; what is less clear is the origin of the postural "instability" often associated with rotatory vertigo. This form is less marked but still resists all know treatments. The purpose of the present study was to determine the actual postural arrangement of subjects suffering from canalolithiasis (CL) of the posterior semicircular canal (PSC) both before and after the positioning maneuver. In this case a personal method of spectral frequency analysis was used in an attempt to clarify the

"Floating" labyrinth. Pathophysiology and treatment of perilymph fistula.

Collapse of the membranous labyrinth of the pars superior is a morphological change observed in 50% of animals with experimentally produced perilymph fistula, although the extent and degree of the collapse may vary greatly. The moderately collapsed membranous labyrinth may drift with CSF and/or perilymph pressure changes and this may stimulate sensory cells of the utricle and/or semicircular canals if the sensory cells are intact and the collapsed wall is in contact with the otolithic membrane and/or cupula. This condition is termed "floating" labyrinth. Caloric irregularity is often observed

The age of rivalry: Eye lens stable isotopes reveal dynamic resource overlap throughout ontogeny in native and invasive fishes.

Competition for shared limiting resources within and between species is a powerful force in biological communities. Modern coexistence theory predicts that higher intra-specific, relative to inter-specific, competition results in species coexistence. However, resource use is rarely constant across animal development, whereby many species experience ontogenetic dietary shifts, suggesting that the relative strengths of competition may change throughout ontogeny. To quantify potential competition between invasive and native stream fishes throughout ontogeny, we measured isotopic niche overlap of

A study of otolith function in patients with orthostatic dizziness.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic dizziness (OD) is the dizziness that occurs when moving from a sitting or a supine to a standing position. It is typically thought to be connected to orthostatic hypotension (OH). The otolithic control of respiratory and cardiovascular system through vestibulosympathetic reflex has been the focus of considerable recent interest. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the orthostatic dizziness and otolith organ function. METHODS: This study was carried on 50 adults aged from 18 to 50 years with normal peripheral hearing. Subjects were divided into two gro

The Role of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins in Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation during Calcium Carbonate Biomineralization.

Some animal organs contain mineralized tissues. These so-called hard tissues are mostly deposits of calcium salts, usually in the form of calcium phosphate or calcium carbonate. Examples of this include fish otoliths and mammalian otoconia, which are found in the inner ear, and they are an essential part of the sensory system that maintains body balance. The composition of ear stones is quite well known, but the role of individual components in the nucleation and growth of these biominerals is enigmatic. It is sure that intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) play an important role in this as
