Saksenaea vasiformis is a species of the order Mucorales rarely reported as a cause of human mucormycosis. We report an unusual case of S. vasiformis otitis occurring in a diabetic woman after penetration of an insect in the right ear. Direct microscopic examination of the clinical sample showed hyaline and non septate hyphae belonging to the order Mucorales. Fungal identification was performed by sequencing the ITS region of the rDNA. To our knowledge, this is the first report of S. vasiformis infection in Tunisia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Otomycosis is an acute, subacute or chronic fungal infection of the pinna, the external auditory meatus and the ear canal caused mainly by several species of saprophytic fungi. Lamisil (Terbinafine) is an allylamine antifungal agent, that is used both in the topical and oral administration for the treatment of dermatophytosis, cutaneous candidiasis, and the pityriasis versicolor. We investigated the in vitro activity of clotrimazole, miconazole, nystatin, and Lamisil against the agents of otomycosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen clinically obtained isolates from otom

Otomycosis has typically been described as fungal infection of the external auditory canal with infrequent complications involving the middle ear. Because of the dearth of data on the prevalence of Otomycosis in this environment and increased rate of immunosuppression, this study was aimed at finding the prevalence and fungal etiological agents responsible for this condition. Aretrospective review of the laboratory reports of ear swabs of patients that presented with signs and symptoms suggestive of fungal infections of the ear like otorrhoea, otalgia and aural fullness were done. The diagnosi

Otomycosis tends to recur despite long-term treatment. To our knowledge, there is no study in the English literature concerning the clinical importance of concomitant otomycosis and dermatomycoses. We investigated the presence of dermatomycoses in 52 patients with otomycosis in order to document the clinical and microbiological importance of their coexistence. Dermatomycoses on the feet and/or hands were identified in 19 patients (36.5%). The most common pathogen for otomycosis was Aspergillus niger, while it was Candida albicans for the dermatomycoses. The same pathogenic fungi were isolated

The pathogenic fungi associated with ear infection among 142 patients with clinical signs of otomycosis are reported. 76(54%) were positive for at least one organism. The isolates included: Aspergillus (63.2%), Candida (35.5%), and Mucor (0.7%). Further analysis showed that Candida species comprised C. albicans (18.4%), C. tropicalis (10.5%), and C. pseudotropicalis (6.6%), while A. fumigatus (39.5%), A. niger (23.7), and Mucor (0.7%), were other significant pathogens. Males and females were almost equally affected, while the preponderance of positive patients (79%) were +21 years old. There w

One hundred-and eight-six fungi were isolated from one hundred-and-eighty cases clinically diagnosed as otomycosis. They comprise 59 species of 26 genera of moulds, and 2 genera of yeasts. This large variety of mould isolates provided ample material for in vitro experiments, to evaluate the anti-fungal activity of six antimycotic substances found in the preparations currently used for the treatment of otomycosis. The antifungal activity of clotrimazole and tolnaftate in vitro was evident. For over 94 per cent of the 59 fungus species tested, the MIC was less than 0.1 micrograms/ml, and for 6 p

The investigation of the fungal etiologies of otomycoses is a rare occurrence in Senegal. The present study aspires to ascertain the profile of these mycoses within the confines of Ziguinchor. Conducted from 3 February 2021 to 31 August 2022, this retrospective descriptive study encompassed a total of 82 patients presenting with clinically suspected otomycosis within the otolaryngology (ENT) department of the Ziguinchor Peace Hospital (ZPH). In this study, two samples were collected from the external auditory canal (EAC) of each patient using sterile swabs. These samples were first observed by

The prevalence of fungal otitis externa, or otomycosis, has been increasing in recent decades. Fungi may act as primary pathogens in this condition, or they may occur as secondary infections after prolonged ototopical treatment with antibiotics, which alters the flora of the external auditory canal (EAC) and enables overgrowth of its fungal inhabitants. We report here a case of otomycosis by Candida parapsilosis, Malassezia obtusa, and Malassezia furfur as a secondary infection following prolonged otic ofloxacin treatment. To the best of our knowledge, although isolation of C. parapsilosis and

Otomycosis, which is otitis externa caused by fungi, is common throughout the world especially in tropical and subtropical countries. However, the epidemiologic data about the etiologic agents of otomycosis in Turkey is limited. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the agents of otomycosis in patients living at Manisa region (located at western Anatolia of Turkey). A total of 2279 cases [1465 male, 813 female; age range 1-87 (mean: 41.7) years] who were clinically prediagnosed as otomycosis at Celal Bayar University Hospital, between February 1995 and July 2011, were included in

BACKGROUND: Otomycosis is usually caused by Candida spp or Aspergillus spp. While Candida is usually multissensitive to available antifungals, Aspergillus is not. Topical antifungals for otomycosis that are available in Portugal are scarce, and systemic treatments have too many interactions and contraindications.
OBJECTIVES: Determine otomycosis epidemiology, microbiology and treatment results.
METHODS: Observational study that included patients followed in Professor Doutor Fernando Fonseca Hospital, between 2011 and 2020. Otomycosis diagnosis was obtained through ear drainage culture, and e

BACKGROUND: Fungal otitis externa is prevalent in tropical and sub-tropical climates; however, over the past two decades, there has been a reported increase in the prevalence of otomycosis in paediatric patients from more temperate climates. This study aimed to review the children diagnosed with otomycosis at the University Hospital Limerick with reference to frequency, causative organism, predisposing factors and management.
METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of paediatric patients from 2001 to 2015. Patients with positive fungal ear swabs and a diagnosis of otomycosis were identi

Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant yeast emerging in immunocompromised and in otherwise healthy individuals. Due to difficulties in microbiological identification of C. auris because of the lack of available laboratory technology in developing countries, the number of patients affected is most likely underestimated. We report the first case of C. auris otitis which now adds Iran as the fifth country around the Persian Gulf, in addition to Kuwait, Oman, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Candida auris is an unknown pathogen in routine laboratories in Iran because most Candida isolates a

Aspergillus ochraceus, a widely distributed filamentous fungus, was isolated and identified by cytology and culture as the cause of unilateral ceruminous purulent otitis in a 4-year-old male mixed-breed dog. The pathogenic role of the fungal isolate was confirmed by a good response to antifungal therapy and the absence of other pathogens. No underlying diseases were identified and the dog recovered after 3 weeks of therapy with oral itraconazole and topical miconazole.

An accurate and systematic myco- and bacteriological appraisal of each case, should comport the lowering of wrong diagnosis and also therapeutic failures in those patients. The target of the AA. is to verify the frequency and the identification as well, of bacteria and/or fungi, unique or in association, responsible for the otitis. And the objective is to start with the most appropriate treatment in spite of the laboratory answer and also to schedule a laboratory protocol to follow in suspected cases of otomycosis.
