PURPOSE: Competent otoscopy is a key otolaryngology skill for a broad range of medical careers, yet undergraduate's confidence to perform otoscopy is reported as low. Smartphone otoscopes have been suggested to improve undergraduates learning of normal eardrum anatomy because unlike the traditional otoscope, the learner and educator share the same image. This study aimed to evaluate whether a smartphone otoscope could enhance medical undergraduates recognition of common ear pathology.
METHODS: 52 medical students were randomised into a standard group that used a traditional otoscope and an in

Tympanostomy tube placement has been commonly used nowadays as a surgical treatment for otitis media. Following the placement, regular scheduled follow-ups for checking the status of the tympanostomy tubes are important during the treatment. The complexity of performing the follow up care mainly lies on identifying the presence and patency of the tympanostomy tube. An automated tube detection program will largely reduce the care costs and enhance the clinical efficiency of the ear nose and throat specialists and general practitioners. In this paper, we develop a computer vision system that is

We conducted a study to determine how accurate various ENT specialists were in estimating the size of 100 tympanic membrane (TM) perforations with standard otoscopy. The specialists included, in descending order of rank, 2 Consultant Surgeons, 2 Senior Registrars, and 2 Registrars, all of whom had confirmed good vision. We compared their estimates, which were made independently and expressed as a percentage of the total area of the TM, with exact measurements calculated with computer-based video-otoscopy. We found that the video-otoscopic calculations were far superior to the estimates of the

BACKGROUND: The most important principle in treating secretory otitis media (SOM) is ventilation of the tympanic cavity. CO2 laser myringotomy achieves this via a self-healing perforation whose diameter essentially determines the duration of transtympanic ventilation.
PATIENTS, METHODS: In this study, laser myringotomy was performed with the CO2 laser otoscope Otoscan in a homogeneous patient collective comprising 81 children (159 ears) suffering from SOM. The tympanic intervention was combined with an adenoidectomy or a CO2 laser tonsillotomy and therefore performed under general insufflatio

Reliable endotracheal intubation is essential for experimental procedures in rats that require controlled ventilation, particularly during thoracic and cardiovascular surgeries. However, airway management in rats remains technically challenging due to anatomical constraints and limited accessibility of available intubation techniques. The goal of this protocol is to describe a simple, low-cost method for orotracheal intubation in rats using video-assisted direct laryngoscopy successfully applied in a cohort of 50 rats. This protocol uses a commercially available video otoscope with an integrat

Otitis Media (OM) is a common and potentially serious middle-ear disorder that mostly affects youngsters. Timely and correct OM diagnosis is critical for successful intervention. Often, it is caused by mucosal disorders that affect tympanic membranes. Otitis Media causes effusion, perforation and retraction also in tympanic membrane. This study investigates the use of deep learning techniques on photographs of the tympanic membrane (TM) to detect OM precisely. The dataset was gathered and approved under supervision of a medical expert at AIIMS Raipur, is divided into four categories: acute oti

A crucial factor in cases of apparent hanging deaths is establishing whether an antemortem hanging or postmortem suspension has occurred. Hanging diagnosis relies upon the history, scene investigation, and gross examination of the body including the ligature furrow and possible resultant injuries including hemorrhages, fractures, and petechiae. However, pathognomonic changes are lacking. Examination of the tympanic membrane may provide additional information to assist in distinguishing antemortem hanging from postmortem suspension. The changes in the tympanic membrane in cases of hanging death

Pneumatic otoscopy to assess the mobility of the tympanic membrane (TM) is a highly recommended diagnostic method of otitis media (OM), a widespread middle ear infection characterized by the fluid accumulation in the middle ear. Nonetheless, limited depth perception and subjective interpretation of small TM displacements have challenged the appropriate and efficient examination of TM dynamics experienced during OM. In this paper, a pneumatic otoscope integrated with low coherence interferometry (LCI) was adapted with a controlled pressure-generating system to record the pneumatic response of t

Background/Objectives: Otitis media (OM), including acute otitis media (AOM) and chronic otitis media (COM), is a common middle ear disease that can lead to significant morbidity if not accurately diagnosed. Otoscopic interpretation remains subjective and operator-dependent, underscoring the need for objective and reproducible diagnostic support. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) offer promising solutions for automated otoscopic image analysis. Methods: We developed an AI-based diagnostic framework consisting of three sequential steps: (1) semi-supervised learning for automatic r
