Tamoxifen and ovarian cysts: a prospective study.

PURPOSE: To prospectively follow a group of women with breast cancer on tamoxifen for the development of ovarian cysts. METHODS: 72 women were followed every 6 months with pelvic examination and vaginal ultrasound. Chi square and Student's t-test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: The duration of treatment was 31.5+/-20 months. The mean age was 51.2+/-9.8 years. 55.6% were post-menopausal. Out of 72 women, 18 (25%) developed ovarian cysts. The mean age of women who developed ovarian cysts was significantly lower than in those who did not (47.0+/-7.0 and 52.5+/-10.2 years, respectiv

Origin of ovarian cancer from benign cysts.

In a case-control study of 1031 epithelial ovarian cancers and 2311 controls conducted in Italy, 56 cases and 116 controls reported history of benign ovarian cysts, corresponding to a relative risk of 1.3 (95% confidence interval = 0.9-1.8). In a subset of 255 histologically reviewed cases, mucinous and endometrioid ovarian neoplasms and neoplasms of stage I or II arose more frequently from cysts, while use of oral contraceptives or parity were not significantly related to history of ovarian cysts.

[Secondary infection of the ovarian endometriotic cysts].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinic manifestations, diagnostic methods and principles of management in the secondary infection of the endometriotic cysts of ovary. METHODS: Thirteen cases of the infected ovarian endometriotic cysts were analysed retrospectively in our hospital from Jan. 1990 to Dec. 1996. The diagnosis was confirmed by the operation and pathologic findings. RESULTS: The clinic manifestations were divided into five types, namely acute, subacute, chronic, occult and stabile types. The definitive diagnosis can be made by abdominal pain, fever and adnexal mass combined with B-scan

Laparoscopic management of ovarian cysts in newborns.

BACKGROUND: Cysts are the most common ovarian masses found in newborn girls. Spontaneous regression, which occurs in approximately 25-50% of cases, is more frequent with smaller cysts. Pre- or postnatal complications are common; these complications may consist of intracystic bleeding, torsion of the cyst or corresponding annex, or self-amputation of the cyst. When the cyst is <4 cm it is possible to perform a simple echographic monitoring to check for the possibility of spontaneous involution; all other cases require surgery. METHODS: Between February 1985 and June 1997, we treated 22 neonata

Oral contraceptive type and functional ovarian cysts.

OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that multiphasic, low-dose monophasic, and high-dose monophasic oral contraceptives share a common protective effect against functional ovarian cysts. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cohort study using the automatic files of Maine Medicaid to assemble a population of 7462 women between the ages of 15 and 44 who were prescribed an oral contraceptive between Jan. 1, 1987, and Dec. 31, 1988. We included as cases 32 women with a principal diagnosis of a functional ovarian cyst confirmed by medical records as being greater than 20 mm in diameter. RESULTS: At compa

Antenatally detected ovarian cysts--a therapeutic dilemma.

Twenty-four instances of ovarian cysts detected antenatally are reported. Most cysts were functional in origin, histologically benign simple cysts. Pregnancy was clinically uncomplicated in all, followed by a spontaneous vaginal delivery in 20 cases between the 33rd and 41st week, four neonates were delivered by a cesarean section for obstetrical reasons. Nine cysts more than 5 cm in diameter at birth were treated surgically. The operative indications were as follows; 5 neonates had clinical symptoms caused by abdominal distention or vomiting. The remaining four showed a sign of hemorrhage fol

[Autonomous ovarian cysts and pseudo-pubertas praecox].

Six prepubertal girls presented with precocious pseudopuberty associated with ovarian follicular cysts. Five patients normalized spontaneously after several months, in one patient the cyst was removed by laparotomy. Elevated estrogen serum levels and failure of gonadotropin responses after gonadotropin releasing hormone were the classical findings in these patients during the acute period of the disease. In a later period, however, estrogen and gonadotropin levels may be normalized although breast development is still present. Surgical treatment was performed in one patient although spontaneou

Sebaceous tumors arising in ovarian dermoid cysts.

The clinicopathologic features of five cases of sebaceous tumors arising in ovarian dermoid cysts and of three previously reported cases are reviewed. They occurred in women with an average age of 58 years and were classified as sebaceous adenoma (five cases), basal cell carcinoma with sebaceous differentiation (two cases), and sebaceous carcinoma (one case). Follow-up information was available for all cases. One patient with basal cell carcinoma with sebaceous differentiation had a pelvic recurrence 2 1/2 years after diagnosis. In no other case did the sebaceous tumor recur or metastasize dur

Management of antenatally diagnosed fetal ovarian cysts.

1. Fetal ovarian cysts are usually unilateral, diagnosed in the third trimester and are uncommon. 2. Average ovarian cyst size is 5 x 5 cm at diagnosis and size does not change throughout the pregnancy. 3. Most cysts are functional in origin and histologically benign, simple cysts. 4. Polyhydramnios is a common finding but associated anomalies are rare. 5. Although large cysts can compress other viscera and torsion or rupture can occur, in utero aspiration has limited value in prenatal management. 6. Vaginal delivery with confirmed fetal pulmonary maturity or at term is appropriate. 7. Soft ti

[Ovarian cysts and celioscopy. Apropos 226 cases].

Tumours of the adnexae are frequent. In most cases it is necessary to look at them directly and to treat them surgically. Laparatomy is a heavy technique. For this reason we use the laparoscope to diagnose cystic lesions and to treat benign tumours. This retrospective study on 226 patients has given us the opportunity to assess the value of the laparoscope in these conditions. From the diagnostic point of view laparoscopy is reliable. No malignant tumour failed to be diagnosed (100% reliable), the anatomopathological examination of specimens in benign conditions was never wrong (100% reliable)

Phasic contraceptive pills and functional ovarian cysts.

This seven-case anecdotal report is presented to alert physicians to the possibility of the formation of functional ovarian cysts during use of phasic contraceptive pills. The patients were studied by the combination of history, physical examination, ultrasound examination, and in two cases surgery. The occurrence of functional ovarian cysts during the use of phasic contraceptive pills is well established while not well appreciated by practicing physicians. This seven-case presentation strongly suggests that phasic contraceptive pills may be a threat to patient health and safety. It is suggest

Structural Gynecological Disease: Fibroids, Endometriosis, Ovarian Cysts.

Fibroids, endometriosis, and ovarian cysts are common conditions. Fibroids can be asymptomatic or present with heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure, and pain. Endometriosis is a common cause of cyclical pelvic pain. Ovarian cysts are generally diagnosed incidentally. Transvaginal ultrasound is the performed imaging modality for all structural gynecological disease. Symptomatic management is recommended for each condition. Fibroids can be managed medically or surgically depending on the patient's symptoms and desire for future fertility. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the first-l

Outcome of sonographically suspected fetal ovarian cysts.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal ovarian cysts (FOCs) are the most common intra-abdominal cystic structures formed during antenatal period. The aim of this study was to evaluate prenatal characteristics and postnatal outcome of sonographically suspected FOCs. METHODS: We reviewed prenatal sonographic data and postnatal medical records of 29 fetuses that were suspected to have ovarian cysts in our hospital, between January 2001 and September 2012. Perinatal outcomes were obtained for all cases. RESULTS: In a total of 29 cases, we confirmed initial antenatal diagnosis of ovarian cyst in 20 cases (68.9%) at po

Ovarian cysts in neonates, children and adolescents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review is intended to increase the understanding of normal ovarian physiology in neonates, prepubescent girls and adolescents and to outline management guidelines for ovarian cysts at each age. RECENT FINDINGS: Ultrasound has increased the level of understanding regarding the development of ovarian cysts. With ultrasound, ovarian cysts are recognized as a consequence of follicular growth and atresia that can be a normal developmental occurrence at all ages. Clinical experience has taught us that ovarian cysts are common, frequently regress without treatment and are sel

Neonatal ovarian cysts: management and follow-up.

Twenty-seven neonatal ovarian cysts were diagnosed in utero during a 13-year period; 9 were complicated and 18 were initially simple, but 8/18 showed evidence of complications in utero or soon after birth, leaving only 10 simple cysts. One simple and 4 complicated cysts were surgically excised early in the study period; 2 simple cysts were treated by needle aspiration at birth because of their large size. The remaining 20 cases were initially managed conservatively. All simple cysts and 10/13 complicated cysts regressed completely within 12 months; 3 that failed to regress were surgically exci

Non-neoplastic ovarian cysts with ectopic pregnancy.

Thirty non-neoplastic ovarian cysts, discovered at laparotomy in association with 27 cases of tubal ectopic pregnancy, were examined to document changes seen in early pregnancy and possibly to identify precursor lesions to the luteinized cysts of later pregnancy. The ages of the patients ranged from 16 to 40 years, and length of gestation varied between 5 and 11 weeks. Of the 30 cysts, 12 were corpus luteum cysts; 10 were called lutein cysts, nonspecific, and had a lining of luteinized cells of a single cell type; three cysts were luteinized follicles; four cysts were unlined or lined by a sin

[Neonatal ovarian cysts. Apropos of 4 cases].

When the authors had seen four cases of ovarian cysts in the newborn during the course of a few months they decided to describe this pathology. All four cases were discovered in utero during the course of ultrasound examination at gestationaL ages between 28 and 36 weeks. Pictures were obtained of round abdominal liquid areas measuring between 45 and 75 mm in diameter, which were separate from the bladder and the kidneys in female fetuses. One of the cysts showed two different ultrasound zones, of which one seemed to be a deposit of blood which was taken to be evidence of torsion of the ovary

Factors associated with ovarian loss and surgical intervention for perinatal ovarian cysts.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal ovarian cysts may spontaneously resolve or cause ovarian torsion. Cyst size and appearance often guide surgical decision making. The natural history of these cysts and impact of perinatal interventions on ovarian outcomes remain unclear. We investigated the association of various clinical parameters with operative intervention and ovarian loss. METHODS: Infants with ovarian cysts meeting our definition of perinatal (diagnosed between 15 weeks gestational age and 1 year) from November 2006-January 2022 were identified. Cysts were characterized by size, morphology, lateral

Pelvic cyst: renal or ovarian?

Ovarian cyst is a common gynecologic finding. Renal cysts develop in 15% of women older than 70 years, and nephroptosis in 20% of the population, primarily in women. Herein, we review these conditions and present a case in which the patient had a cystic kidney in combination with nephroptosis. At vaginal ultrasound performed with the patient in an upright position, the kidney slid down into the pelvis, thus imitating an ovarian mass. At laparoscopy, the patient was positioned head down, and the kidney, lying near the diaphragm, was not seen.
