Identification of a brain fingerprint for overweight and obesity.

The brain plays a central role in the pathophysiology of overweight and obesity. Connectome-based Predictive Modeling (CPM) is a newly developed, data-driven approach that exploits whole-brain functional connectivity to predict a behavior or trait that varies across individuals. We used CPM to determine whether brain "fingerprints" evoked during milkshake consumption could be isolated for common measures of adiposity in 67 adults with overweight and obesity. We found that CPM captures more variance in waist circumference than either percent body fat or BMI, the most frequently used measures to

Prenatal Exposure to Acetaminophen and Overweight in Childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Acetaminophen (paracetamol), a medication commonly used in pregnancy, has hormonal effects, as has been suggested in experimental studies. Developmental exposure to endocrine disruptors could predispose individuals to weight gain. This study evaluated the associations between prenatal acetaminophen exposure and overweight in childhood. METHODS: A total of 30,127 (age 7) and 24,934 (age 11) children in the Danish National Birth Cohort born during 1996 to 2002 were studied. Mothers reported acetaminophen use in telephone interviews conducted during pregnancy, and children's BMI and w

Being Overweight or Obese and the Development of Asthma.

OBJECTIVES: Adult obesity is linked to asthma cases and is estimated to lead to 250 000 new cases yearly. Similar incidence and attributable risk (AR) estimates have not been developed for children. We sought to describe the relationship between overweight and obesity and incident asthma in childhood and quantify AR statistics in the United States for overweight and obesity on pediatric asthma. METHODS: The PEDSnet clinical data research network was used to conduct a retrospective cohort study (January 2009-December 2015) to compare asthma incidence among overweight and/or obese versus health

Vancomycin dosage in overweight and obese children.

PURPOSE: Vancomycin dosages in overweight and obese children were evaluated. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated data for children who were age 2-17 years, received i.v. vancomycin, and were admitted to a children's hospital from September 1, 2007, through October 31, 2009. Patients were then stratified into two groups: normal-weight patients and overweight or obese patients. The primary objective was to compare the number of vancomycin regimens between groups with a trough concentration of 5-15 μg/mL. Secondary objectives included a comparison of dosage changes and toxicities. Multiv

Growth and development of overweight and obese girls.

INTRODUCTION: The pattern of development of obesity during childhood and adolescence is unclear, hindering preventive strategies. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in growth and tempo of maturation between overweight or obese and normal weight girls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data were obtained from 1008 schoolgirls aged 16-18 years for whom earlier data on weight and height were available. The height and body mass were measured and the BMI was calculated. Height and weight in early life were assessed by medical records review. Underweight, overweigh

Allocating scarce medical resources to the overweight.

BACKGROUND: A programmatic research effort investigated how lay people weigh information on hypothetical patients when making decisions regarding the allocation of scarce medical resources. This study is partly replicative and partly innovative, and looks particularly at whether overweight patients would be discriminated against in allocating resources. AIMS: This study aims to determine the importance given to specific patient characteristics when lay participants are asked to allocate scarce medical resources. SAMPLE: In all, 156 British adults (82 males, 73 females), aged 19 to 84 years,

Obstetric outcomes in overweight and obese adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Obese adult pregnant women have increased rates of maternal and neonatal complications. Our objective was to examine adverse obstetric outcomes in overweight adolescent women. STUDY DESIGN: In a retrospective case-control study of 4822 women who were < 19 years old, 3324 appropriate-weight subjects (body mass index, 18.5-24.9 kg/m2) and 1498 overweight subjects (body mass index, > or = 25 kg/m2) were compared. Frequencies and odds ratios for adverse maternal or neonatal events were computed. RESULTS: Compared with appropriate-weight adolescents, primary cesarean delivery (odds rat

Current treatment approaches to overweight in adolescents.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The prevalence of overweight among adolescents aged 12 to 19 in the United States has steadily increased since the 1960s. The purpose of this review is to familiarize primary care clinicians with the most recent primary care, pharmacotherapy, and surgical options for the treatment of overweight in adolescence. RECENT FINDINGS: Initial treatment of the overweight adolescent should involve a comprehensive approach that facilitates changes in diet, exercise, and behavior that engage the entire family as participants and role models. For adolescents in whom a comprehensive prog

Sensitivity to reward: implications for overeating and overweight.

Sensitivity to reward (STR)-a personality trait firmly rooted in the neurobiology of the mesolimbic dopamine system-has been strongly implicated in the risk for addiction. This construct describes the ability to derive pleasure or reward from natural reinforcers like food, and from pharmacologic rewards like addictive drugs. Recently experts in the field of addiction research have acknowledged that psychomotor stimulant drugs are no longer at the heart of all addictions, and that brain circuits can also be deranged with natural rewards like food. The present study tested a model in which STR w

Managing overweight in older children and adolescents.

Because overweight and obesity are chronic health conditions, long-term management is necessary, with particular attention to comorbidities. Lifestyle modification including changes in diet and activity can be accomplished in the primary care setting. Many overweight and obese children and adolescents can achieve weight loss of 0.5 kg per week even over long periods. For some severely obese children, pharmacotherapy or surgery may be necessary.

Morphometry of the pineal gland in overweight individuals.

While obesity is an ever increasing problem in today's world, numerous facts suggest that its side-effects continue to be underestimated. Recent studies link obesity with pineal gland hormone and melatonin. The aim of this study was to determine differences in morphological attributes of the pineal gland in normal and overweight people in terms of pineal width and volume. A lower pineal width and volume in overweight individuals stated in the study may suggest a different excretory activity of the pineal gland.

Epidemiology, morbidity, and treatment of overweight and obesity.

Although still considered more of a cosmetic problem by both the general public and some areas of the medical community, overweight and obesity have reached epidemic proportions worldwide. Overweight and obesity have not only a significant psychological impact but also result in an increased risk for development of numerous chronic and sometimes fatal diseases. The morbidity from obesity-associated disorders increases with higher body mass index and begins within the normal weight range. The costs (direct and indirect) associated with treating obesity and its comorbid conditions are notable an

Overweight and hypertension : a 2-way street?

Cross-sectionally, higher weight is associated with higher blood pressure levels; prospectively, baseline weight and weight gain predict higher blood pressure. The loss of weight is frequently associated with a decrease in blood pressure. These findings suggest that weight gain may pathophysiologically contribute to blood pressure elevation. In this review, we present data to indicate that the reverse is also true; persons of equal weight who had higher initial blood pressures gain more weight in the future. We also propose a plausible hypothesis to explain this reverse relationship. Both the

Bulimia nervosa with and without a history of overweight.

In a review of the records of 454 patients with bulimia nervosa, 87 (19.2%) reported having a history of weight greater than 130% ideal body weight, although they were normal weight at evaluation. As contrasted to patients who had no history of having been overweight, this group of patients had a later onset of bulimia symptoms, weighed more and were more likely to be very dissatisfied with their current weight and to fear becoming overweight. The eating problems were similar in both groups.

B-cell nesidioblastosis in the overweight newborn.

The endocrine pancreata of five overweight newborns (birthweight ranging from 3,800 g to 4,500 g) have been studied. Basal blood glucose and insulin levels were normal in these newborns. A marked and widespread B-cell nesidioblastosis was observed in relation to ten controls (birthweight ranging from 2,900 to 3,500 g). Morphometric analysis showed in the overweight newborns an increase in endocrine tissue, with special reference to B cells. These morphological aspects of the endocrine pancreas in relation to the birthweight were discussed.

Calcium supplementation for people with overweight or obesity.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a major health problem worldwide as it can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and insulin resistance. The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing worldwide across different age groups. There is evidence of an inverse relationship between calcium intake and body weight. The clinical relevance of a small reduction in body weight has been questioned. However, at a population level, a small effect could mitigate the observed global trends. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of calcium supplementation on weight loss in individuals living
