Exosomes-mediated molecular mechanisms underlying the transformation of ovarian tissue into a functional placental analogue in black rockfish ( Sebastes schlegelii).

Viviparity has independently evolved multiple times in teleosts, leading to diverse modes of maternal nutrient provisioning. In black rockfish ( Sebastes schlegelii), embryos gain dry weight during gestation, supported by a placental connection that facilitates maternal-fetal nutrient transfer. Although prior studies have outlined the morphology and evolutionary convergence of the black rockfish placental analogue, its full architecture and underlying molecular mechanisms remain unresolved. Here, we show that the maternal component of the placental analogue, derived from ovarian follicular tis

Anisakids in marine fish from the coast of Chon Buri Province, Thailand.

A total of 1,600 specimens, consisting of 16 different species of marine fish, were dissected and examined for anisakid larvae and adults in visceral organs, abdominal cavity, and muscles. One species of adult-stage nematode was found in two of 16 species of marine fish studied, Johnius carouna and Dendrophysa russelli. No anisakid larvae (third-stage) was found in any of the 16 species of marine fish studied. Morphological study of the adult-stage nematode showed similar morphology to Anisakis simplex. We found that the nematode adult recovered from the marine fish differed from other anisaki

Differences in performance of Aedes aegypti larvae raised at different densities in tires and ovitraps under field conditions in Argentina.

Alteration of fitness components was assessed in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, in automobile tires and vases (ovitraps) under field conditions. Larval numbers were manipulated in both kinds of containers to compare low, high, and control (natural) densities. Densities were set from a census of a wild population, then doubling and reducing to half the mean crowding, m*. Artificially altered densities were not high or low enough to produce differences among treatments. Tires generated more vigorous larval populations and females with higher fecundity than did small containers, althou

Diversity and dynamics of fish ovaries: Insights into reproductive strategies, hormonal regulation, and ovarian development.

Fish ovaries exhibit a remarkable diversity in shape, size, and organization, reflecting the myriad reproductive strategies employed by different species. This review delves into the intricate biology of fish ovaries, highlighting their structural diversity and the hormonal regulation that governs ovarian development and oocyte maturation. Key hormones include pituitary gonadotropins (GTHs) and maturation-inducing hormones (MIHs), which initiate oocyte growth and maturation. GTHs stimulate ovarian production of estradiol-17β and 17α,20β-DP, which induce oocyte maturation via MPF formation. Sex

Temporal control of gene silencing by in ovo electroporation.

The analysis of gene function during embryonic development asks for tight temporal control of gene expression. Classic genetic tools do not allow for this, as the absence of a gene during the early stages of development will preclude its functional analysis during later stages. In contrast, RNAi technology allows one to achieve temporal control of gene silencing especially when used with oviparous animal models. In contrast to mammals, reptiles and birds are easily accessible during embryonic development. We have developed approaches to use RNAi for the analysis of gene function during nervous

Terminology of gonadal anomalies in fish and amphibians resulting from chemical exposures.

Given the recent increase in the number of studies describing the ability of chemicals to exert endocrine-disrupting effects, not only in fish but in a variety of other oviparous groups such as amphibians and reptiles, there is an urgent need to harmonize the terminology currently used in describing pathological changes of the gonads. In addition to difficulties in comparing results from different studies, there is also the risk of miscommunication by using terms that imply a certain clinical relevance which may not be true for the species examined. Especially in the case of the recent and con

Biotransformation causes the sex-specific regulation of polychlorinated biphenyls during metamorphosis of silkworm (Bombyx mori) and their effect on the silkworm development.

The decline in insect populations is indisputable. Currently, the effects of persistent organic pollutants on insect populations have not been sufficiently investigated. Maternal transfer of pollutants is considered to be an inherently correct reason for sex differences in pollutant levels in oviparous organisms. Therefore, in this study, we exposed silkworms (Bombyx mori) to different levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to investigate their effects on silkworm development and the sex-specific regulation of PCBs during metamorphosis. PCB exposure causes disorders in amino acid, energy,

Radix natalensis: the effect of Fasciola hepatica infection on the reproductive activity of the snail.

Experimental infections of Egyptian Radix natalensis (shell height at miracidial exposure: 4 mm) with a French isolate of Fasciola hepatica were carried out under laboratory conditions at 22 °C to specify the characteristics and follow the dynamics of their egg-laying. Controls constituted unexposed R. natalensis of the same size. No significant difference between controls and the uninfected snails of the exposed group was noted, whatever the parameter considered. In controls and exposed snails, the dates of the first egg masses were close to each other (56.4-65.3 days). In contrast, the life

Field evaluation of Olyset nets: a long-lasting insecticidal net against malaria vectors Anopheles culicifacies and Anopheles fluviatilis in a hyperendemic tribal area of Orissa, India.

A village-scale trial was conducted on the efficacy of Olyset nets: a long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) factory treated with 2% wt:wt permethrin against malaria vectors Anopheles culicifacies Giles and Anopheles fluviatilis James, in Sundargarh District, Orissa, India. The study area comprised 22 villages that were randomized into three clusters and designated as Olyset net, untreated net, and no net clusters. Baseline studies showed that both vector species were 100% susceptible to permethrin. Results of wash resistance and bioefficacy of Olyset nets showed 100% mortality in An. culicifaci

The influence of incubation temperature on offspring traits varies across northern and southern populations of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

Maternal provisioning and the developmental environment are fundamental determinants of offspring traits, particularly in oviparous species. However, the extent to which embryonic responses to these factors differ across populations to drive phenotypic variation is not well understood. Here, we examine the contributions of maternal provisioning and incubation temperature to hatchling morphological and metabolic traits across four populations of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), encompassing a large portion of the species' latitudinal range. Our results show that whereas the

In vivo fertilization and development of medaka eggs initiated by artificial insemination.

Fertilization and development in the ovarian cavity of oviparous fish, Oryzias latipes, were examined using the S-rR strain in which the sex genotype can be easily distinguished by the body color of the fish. Mature eggs were fertilized within the ovarian cavity after a sperm suspension was artificially introduced with a small bore-pipette through the urinogenital opening. Three batches of eggs ovulated within 48 hrs were fertilized and began to develop in the ovarian cavity, while eggs ovulated 72 hrs post-insemination (PI) were no longer fertilized. These observations indicate that ovulation

Theoretical and analytical embryology of conjoined twins: part I: embryogenesis.

A review of over 1,800 publications concerning the embryology and pathologic anatomy of conjoined twins provides convincing evidence that they all result from the secondary union of two originally separate monovular embryonic discs. This "fusion" theory seems to be confirmed by the adjustments to union and the pattern and incidence of specific anomalies at the proposed sites of conjunction in more than 1,200 cases, all of which can be arranged in two uninterrupted series of cases, the one united dorsally (in the neural tube) and the other, ventrally (over a shared a yolk sac). No theoretical "

Experimental transmission of Capillaria philippinensis to birds.

Capillaria philippinensis larvae from fish and adult and larval forms of the parasite from gerbil intestines established parent infections when given a stomach tube to several species of birds from Taiwan. Adult males, oviparous and larviparous females and larval stages were found in Nycticorax nycticorax, Bubulcus ibis, Ixobrychus sinensis, Gallinula chloropus and Amaurornis phoenicurus. C. philippinensis also developed in pigeons, Rostratula benghalensis, a few Anas spp. and chickens. Some birds died of the infection while others recovered; most could not be re-infected after repeated exposu

Transcriptome sequencing reveals genetic mechanisms underlying the transition between the laying and brooding phases and gene expression changes associated with divergent reproductive phenotypes in chickens.

Transition from laying to incubation behavior in chicken is an interesting topic in reproductive biology. The decline of incubation behavior in chicken population has led to considerable phenotypic differences in reproductive traits between breeds. However, the exact genetic mechanism of the reproductive phase transition still largely unknown and little is known about the gene expression changes that contribute to the phenotypic differences. We performed mRNA sequencing to investigate the molecular mechanism underlying the transition from laying to brooding and to detect difference in gene reg

The hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis in birds and its role in bird development and reproduction.

This article reviews thyroid function and its hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis control in birds with emphasis on the similarities and differences in thyroid function compared to mammals and other vertebrate classes. Thyroid hormones are important in metabolism and the thermogenesis required for homeothermy in birds, as in mammals, the other homeothermic class of vertebrates. Thyroid hormones play important roles in development and growth in birds, as is the case for all vertebrate classes. The developmental effects of thyroid hormones in birds are presented in the context of differenc

Relative distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls among tissues of neonatal American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis).

Recent papers have investigated the utility of chemical analysis of the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) as a nonlethal indicator of avian and reptilian exposure to persistent environmental contaminants. This study was undertaken to evaluate the chemical distribution among fat, CAM, and residual yolk tissues of live neonatal American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) to investigate the potential utility of CAM use as a nonlethal indicator of exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). CAMs were collected from neonatal alligators at hatch, whereas yolk sacs and fat tissues were taken from

Mobilization of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium by embryonic alligators (Alligator mississippiensis).

The yolk of an alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) egg contains approximately 115 mg of Ca, 180 mg of P, and 17 mg of Mg at oviposition. This compartment is the primary (or sole) source of P and Mg for the forming embryo. Both of these elements are depleted rapidly from the yolk once the embryo enters the growth phase of development. The yolk also is an important source of Ca for the embryo, particularly during the first two-thirds of incubation. During the last trimester of development, however, the embryo supplements Ca from the yolk with Ca mobilized from the eggshell. Indeed, more Ca is

Comparative changes in the serum concentrations of inhibin-B, prolactin, gonadotropins and steroid hormones at different reproductive States in domestic Turkey hens.

The present study was undertaken to compare the changes in circulating levels of inhibin-B, prolactin, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), estradiol-17beta, progesterone and testosterone during the different reproductive states of turkey hens. Blood samples were collected during different reproductive states, at laying, incubating and out of lay. Inhibin-B was measured by ELISA, while other hormones were determined by Chemiluminescent Microparticle Immunoassay (CMIA). The results revealed highly significant differences among the hen's states for all serum hormone conc

Changes in the localization of antigen presenting cells and T cells in the utero-vaginal junction after repeated artificial insemination in laying hens.

The goal of our present study was to observe whether the populations of antigen presenting cells (Ia+ cells) and T cell subsets (CD4+ and CD8+ T cells) change in the utero-vaginal junction (UVJ) of Rhode Island Red laying hens that showed dramatic declines in fertility after repeated artificial insemination (AI). Rhode Island Red laying hens were divided into two groups: a virgin group (R-V) and artificial inseminated group (R-AI), which was exposed to weekly AI for a period of 3 mo. Undiluted fresh semen collected from healthy Tosa-Jidori roosters, a native Japanese breed maintained in Kochi

In ovo manipulation of Nile crocodile embryos: egg windowing and potential dental research applications.

Crocodilians exhibit continuous tooth replacement (i.e., polyphyodonty) and have been identified as suitable models for tooth regeneration research due to the similarity in dental cavity and tooth anatomy between these creatures and humans. Various studies reporting in ovo bird embryo manipulation exist, but such reports for reptiles are virtually non-existent. Egg windowing enables direct access to oviparous vertebrate embryos and is therefore an important component of in ovo embryo manipulation experiments. The aim of the present study was to window Nile crocodile, Crocodylus niloticus eggs
