Spatiotemporal variability of air-sea CO2 fluxes in response to El Niño-related marine heatwaves in the tropical Pacific Ocean.

The tropical Pacific is the largest oceanic source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, where persistent marine heatwaves (MHWs) frequently occur. During persistent MHW events which are associated with strong El Niño events, CO2 outgassing is notably reduced, however, its detailed spatiotemporal response to MHWs has not been fully characterized. In this study, we showed a high degree of consistency between CO2 source regions in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean and the occurrence regions with average annual MHW days exceeding 45 days (co-occurring area covers 80% of the area where M

Interannual variability of human plague occurrence in the Western United States explained by tropical and North Pacific Ocean climate variability.

Plague is a vector-borne, highly virulent zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis. It persists in nature through transmission between its hosts (wild rodents) and vectors (fleas). During epizootics, the disease expands and spills over to other host species such as humans living in or close to affected areas. Here, we investigate the effect of large-scale climate variability on the dynamics of human plague in the western United States using a 56-year time series of plague reports (1950-2005). We found that El Niño Southern Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation in combinat

Sensitive monitoring of iodine species in sea water using capillary electrophoresis: vertical profiles of dissolved iodine in the Pacific Ocean.

Using a novel high-sensitivity capillary electrophoretic method, vertical distributions of iodate, iodide, total inorganic iodine, dissolved organic iodine and total iodine in the North Pacific Ocean (0-5500 m) were determined without any sample pre-treatment other than UV irradiation before total iodine analysis. An extensive set of data demonstrated that the iodine behaviour in the ocean water collected during a cruise in the North Pacific Ocean in February-March 2003 was not conservative but correlated with variations in concentrations of dissolved oxygen and nutrient elements such as silic

New species of Balantidium and Paracichlidotherus (Ciliophora) inhabiting the intestines of four surgeonfish species from the Tuvalu Islands, Pacific Ocean.

Four species of adult herbivorous surgeonfishes (Family Acanthuridae) were collected from the remote South-Pacific island system of Tuvalu. Their intestinal contents were examined, and of four populations of ciliated protists, two new species were discovered and are described. Ciliates were examined after protargol staining and, in some cases, scanning electron microscopy. Members of each population were examined and 10 characters measured for the balantidia, and 13 for the paracichlidotherids. A new Balantidium is described which has an unusually large dextr-oral field of cilia. A new species

A new species of Dermadena (Digenea: Lepocreadiidae) from the stone triggerfish Pseudobalistes naufragium (Tetraodontiformes: Balistidae) in the South American Pacific Ocean.

The present paper describes a new species of Dermadena (Digenea) parasitizing Pseudobalistes naufragium in Puerto Pizarro, northern Peru, using light and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). Additionally, molecular analysis was also performed to determine the phylogenetic affinities of Dermadena within the Lepocreadiidae. The new species is differentiated from Dermadena spatiosa, Dermadena stirlingi and Dermadena lactophrysi by presenting a curved and well-developed external seminal vesicle. Also, SEM revealed numerous dome-shaped tegument protuberances forming glandular papillae with transve

Micro-evolutionary implications of allozymic and morphometric variations in sealworms Pseudoterranova sp. (Ascaridoidea: Anisakidae) among sympatric hosts from the southeastern Pacific Ocean.

We found significant morphometric and electrophoretic differences between sealworm larvae collected from four sympatric fish host species off the central coast of Chile. The South American sea lion, Otaria byronia, is a suitable host and most likely the only definitive host species in the study area. Morphological patterns of caudal papillae in adult males collected from sea lions and electrophoretic evidence from larvae and adults substantiate our conclusion that they belong to just one, new species yet to be described. The genetic and morphometric differences found between sealworm larvae fr

Reductions of dry atmospheric inorganic nitrogen deposition and carbon uptake in the Yellow Sea of the Northwestern Pacific Ocean for the COVID-19 period.

Rapid population growth and industrialization in Northeast Asian countries have led to excessive atmospheric nitrogen (N) inputs into the Yellow Sea and the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. Given its location between China and the Korean Peninsula, the Yellow Sea is influenced by anthropogenic emissions from both regions and receives substantial N deposition, which may enhance primary productivity. We monitored dry inorganic N (nitrate; NO3- and ammonium; NH4+) deposition and analyzed the isotopic compositions of δ15N- and δ18O-NO3-, δ13C-total carbon (TC), and δ15N-total nitrogen (TN) in total sus

Influence of the Tohoku-Pacific Ocean earthquake and its aftershocks on the response to prophylactic therapy with lomerizine in patients with migraine in Tokyo: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: On March 11, 2011, the Tohoku-Pacific Ocean earthquake (magnitude 9.0) struck the eastern part of Japan. Despite being far from the epicenter of the catastrophic earthquake, the effects were strongly felt in Tokyo, and the aftershocks continued for several months. There are no reports regarding the influence of earthquakes on migraine medication. The aim of our study was to determine the impact of earthquakes on prophylactic therapy with lomerizine in patients with migraine in Tokyo. METHODS: The study included patients with migraine who were admitted to outpatient clinics in Toky

Habitat Suitability and Glacial Refugia of the Turbid-Water Coral Turbinaria peltata Across the Indo-West Pacific Ocean Based on MaxEnt Modeling.

As a typical turbid-water reef coral, Turbinaria peltata shows strong tolerance to high temperature and sediment disturbance, yet its basin-scale niche drivers and glacial distribution dynamics across the Indo-West Pacific remain unclear. Here we constructed optimized MaxEnt models using 322 independent distribution points and 21 non-collinear marine environmental variables for modern and Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) scenarios. The model average test AUC reached 0.9874, showing excellent predictive performance. Water depth acted as the most influential predictor in the model (contribution = 44.7

Pacific Ocean-wide profile of CYP1A1 expression, stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios, and organic contaminant burden in sperm whale skin biopsies.

BACKGROUND: Ocean pollution affects marine organisms and ecosystems as well as humans. The International Oceanographic Commission recommends ocean health monitoring programs to investigate the presence of marine contaminants and the health of threatened species and the use of multiple and early-warning biomarker approaches. OBJECTIVE: We explored the hypothesis that biomarker and contaminant analyses in skin biopsies of the threatened sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) could reveal geographical trends in exposure on an oceanwide scale. METHODS: We analyzed cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) expr

Faunal biodiversity of the lower abyssal and hadal zones of the Japan, Ryukyu and Izu-Ogasawara trenches (NW Pacific Ocean; 4534-9775 m).

In-situ video-based observations collected using multiple platforms are increasingly used for biodiversity assessments at abyssal and hadal depths, sometimes complemented by physical sampling. Here, we present an imagery-based guide and biodiversity record of organisms observed in the Japan, Ryukyu and Izu-Ogasawara trenches in the Northwest Pacific Ocean between 4534 m and 9775 m. The guide compiles morphotaxa identifications, reference imagery and observational notes from approximately 460 hours of video footage obtained through baited lander and submersible transect surveys. Incidence of three Kudoa spp., K. neothunni, K. hexapunctata, and K. thunni (Myxosporea: Multivalvulida), in Thunnus tunas distributed in the western Pacific Ocean.

A variety of tunas of the genus Thunnus are consumed daily in Japan as sliced raw fish (sashimi and sushi). The consumption of fresh sliced raw fish, i.e., unfrozen or uncooked, can sometimes cause food poisoning that is manifested by transient diarrhea and vomiting for a single day. One of the causes of this type of food poisoning has been identified as live Kudoa septempunctata (Myxosporea: Multivalvulida) in the olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Furthermore, raw slices of fresh tunas are highly suspected to be a possible causative fish of similar food poisoning in Japan. In the prese

Detection and molecular characteristics of Pyelosomum cochlear (Digenea: Pronocephalidae) in the urinary bladder of the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) in the Northwest Pacific Ocean.

The genus Pyelosomum consists of parasitic flukes occurring primarily in marine turtles; Pyelosomum cochlear Looss 1899 is the only species of this genus that parasitizes the urinary bladder. In this study, we detected flukes in the urinary bladders of 20 of 88 green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) harvested in the Ogasawara Islands, in the Northwest Pacific Ocean. We identified the flukes as P. cochlear based on detailed morphological observations and comparisons of morphometric measurements of the species reported previously. Disparities in bioaccumulation of chlorinated organic pollutants in O. bartramii and seawater from the Northwest Pacific Ocean: Compound - specific mechanisms and health risks.

Chlorinated organic pollutants (COPs), including organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), persist in marine ecosystems despite global restrictions, posing risks to both organisms and human health. This study systematically investigated the bioaccumulation of 24 COPs in seawater and tissues (muscle, stomach, digestive gland) of the neon flying squid (Ommastrephes bartramii) from the Northwest Pacific Ocean. In O. bartramii, ∑OCPs (8.78-353.72 ng g-1 lw, 78.77 ng g-1 lw) exceeded ∑PCBs (2.50-168.25 ng g-1 lw, 31.59 ng g-1 lw), especially in the digestive gland, whil
