Cheek Injection Model for Simultaneous Measurement of Pain and Itch-related Behaviors.

Itch was defined as "an unpleasant cutaneous sensation that provokes a desire to scratch" by Rothman in 1941. In mouse models, scratch bouts are typically counted to evaluate itch induced by pruritogens. However, previous reports have shown that algesic substances also induce scratching behaviors in a mouse neck injection model, which is the most common test used for scratching behaviors. This finding makes it difficult to study itch in mice.  In contrast, capsaicin, a common algogen, reduced scratching behaviors in some neck injection experiments. Therefore, the effect of pain on scratching b

Core outcome measurement instruments for clinical trials in nonspecific low back pain.

To standardize outcome reporting in clinical trials of patients with nonspecific low back pain, an international multidisciplinary panel recommended physical functioning, pain intensity, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) as core outcome domains. Given the lack of a consensus on measurement instruments for these 3 domains in patients with low back pain, this study aimed to generate such consensus. The measurement properties of 17 patient-reported outcome measures for physical functioning, 3 for pain intensity, and 5 for HRQoL were appraised in 3 systematic reviews following the COSMIN

A protocol for chronic pain outcome measurement enhancement by linking PROMIS-29 scale to legacy measures and improving chronic pain stratification.

BACKGROUND: Substantial investment has gone into research on the efficacy and effectiveness of pharmaceutical and nonpharmacologic interventions for chronic pain. However, synthesizing this extensive literature is challenging because of differences in the outcome measures used in studies of similar or competing interventions. The absence of a common metric makes it difficult to replicate findings, pool data from multiple studies, resolve conflicting conclusions, or reach consensus when interpreting findings. METHODS: This study has a seven-member Advisory Council of chronic pain experts. Prel

Measuring the impact of trigeminal neuralgia pain: the Penn Facial Pain Scale-Revised.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The Penn Facial Pain Scale (Penn-FPS) was originally developed as a supplemental module to the Brief Pain Inventory Pain Interference Index (BPI-PII) in order to fully assess the impact of trigeminal neuralgia (TN) pain on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The current objective is to create and establish the content validity of a new stand-alone version of the measure, the Penn-FPS-Revised (Penn-FPS-R). METHODS: Twenty participants (15 USA and 5 UK) with confirmed TN engaged in concept elicitation and cognitive debriefing interviews. These semi-struct

The words patients use to describe chronic pain: implications for measuring pain quality.

Patients with low back pain (LBP; N = 102), fibromyalgia (FM; N = 100), and headache (HA; N = 100) were asked to describe their pain in their own words, and the words and phrases they used were then classified into 7 global domains (eg, Pain Quality, Pain Magnitude) and as many specific subdomains as needed to capture all of the ideas expressed (eg, under Pain Quality, subdomains such as sharp, achy, and throbbing). Fifteen pain quality subdomains were identified as most common. Nine of these demonstrated significant between-group differences in frequency. For example, patients with FM describ

Psychometrics properties of self-reported pain sensitivity measures in individuals with shoulder pain.

BackgroundCentral sensitization (CS) is increasingly recognized as a key contributor to persistent shoulder pain. While self-report tools such as the Central Sensitization Inventory (CSI) and the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire (PSQ) are commonly used to assess CS, the psychometric properties of these tools have not been established in individuals with shoulder pain.ObjectiveThis study aimed to examine the convergent validity and test-retest reliability of the CSI and PSQ by comparing them with objective pain sensitivity measures.MethodsFifty-three adults with chronic shoulder pain completed th

Overlap of pain-related and general measures of disability among adults with chronic pain.

PURPOSE: Chronic pain is known to be correlated with disability. We aimed to determine the overlap between a general self-reported measure of disability and a measure of disability due to pain problems among adults with chronic pain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and analyzed respondents with chronic pain in the past 3 months. General disability was defined as being limited in the kind or amount of work one can do due to any physical, mental, or emotional problem. Pain-related disability was defined as pain limiting one's activity on "mos

Pain-autonomic measures reveal nociceptive sensitization in complex regional pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Allodynia and hyperalgesia are common signs in individuals with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), mainly attributed to sensitization of the nociceptive system. Appropriate diagnostic tools for the objective assessment of such hypersensitivities are still lacking, which are essential for the development of mechanism-based treatment strategies. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the use of pain-autonomic readouts to objectively detect sensitization processes in CRPS. METHODS: Twenty individuals with chronic CRPS were recruited for the study alongside 16 age- and sex-matched h

Construct validity of an instrument to measure neuropathic pain in women with bladder pain syndrome.

AIMS: To determine the construct validity of an instrument to measure neuropathic pain in women with bladder pain syndrome (BPS). Our hypothesis is that neuropathic, bladder, and bowel pain represent different constructs in women with BPS. METHODS: Secondary planned analysis of a prospective cross-sectional study of 150 women with BPS. The relationship between neuropathic pain, urinary, and bowel symptoms was assessed. RESULTS: The correlation of the total neuropathic pain score with total urinary and bowel symptom scores was low to moderate (r = 0.28-0.49). The correlation of specific neuro

Understanding the pain profile in patients with haemophilia: Impaired descending pain inhibition as measured by conditioned pain modulation.

INTRODUCTION: Haemophilic arthropathy is associated with pain that often becomes chronic, likely caused by peripheral and central mechanisms. In the field of haemophilia, to our knowledge, the role of the descending pain pathway, which can also be involved in these pain processes, has not been examined to date. AIM: In light of the dearth of existing literature, we sought to evaluate the function of endogenous descending pain modulation in patients with haemophilia. METHODS: Thirty adult patients with moderate to severe haemophilia A or B (median [interquartile range] age 51.0 [42.0-54.0]) a

Why Unidimensional Pain Measurement Prevails in the Pediatric Acute Pain Context and What Multidimensional Self-Report Methods Can Offer.

Although pain is widely recognized to be a multidimensional experience and defined as such, unidimensional pain measurement focusing on pain intensity prevails in the pediatric acute pain context. Unidimensional assessments fail to provide a comprehensive picture of a child's pain experience and commonly do little to shape clinical interventions. The current review paper overviews the theoretical and empirical literature supporting the multidimensional nature of pediatric acute pain. Literature reporting concordance data for children's self-reported sensory, affective and evaluative pain score

Automated measurement of spontaneous pain-associated limb movement and drug efficacy evaluation in a rat model of neuropathic pain.

BACKGROUND: The withdrawal response elicited by a nociceptive stimulus, i.e., evoked pain measure, is commonly used as an efficacy endpoint in neuropathic pain animal models. It, however, has several limitations, which highlight the importance of examining spontaneous pain. The present study describes an automated method for measuring spontaneous pain behaviour in a rat model of neuropathic pain caused by chronic constriction injury (CCI) of sciatic nerve. METHODS: After CCI surgery, a small magnet was implanted into the operated limb. The rat was placed in a test chamber that was surrounded

Reliability and standard error of measurement of pressure pain thresholds at articular landmarks.

BACKGROUND: Pressure pain threshold (PPT) testing is a widely used quantitative sensory testing method to assess mechanical pain sensitivity. While reference values for PPT at articular-/joint-related and osseous landmarks are available, data on measurement reliability remain limited. This study aimed to determine the intra- and inter-rater reliability of PPT measurements and to report the standard error of measurement (SEM) for joint PPT. METHODS: Healthy participants aged 18-40 years were included in a two-part study. In Part A (N = 40), intra-rater reliability was assessed through three re
