Synthesis, gas-phase photoelectron spectroscopic, and theoretical studies of stannylated dinuclear iron dithiolates.

Stannylated dinuclear iron dithiolates (mu-SSnMe(2)CH(2)S)[Fe(CO)(3)](2), (mu-SCH(2)SnMe(2)CH(2)S) [Fe(CO)(3)](2), and (mu-SCH(2)SnMe(3))(2)[Fe(CO)(3)](2), which are structurally similar to the active site of iron-only hydrogenase, were synthesized and studied by gas-phase photoelectron spectroscopy. The orbital origins of ionizations were assigned by comparison of He I and He II photoelectron spectra and with the aid of hybrid density functional electronic structure calculations. Stannylation lowers the ionization energy of sulfur lone pair orbitals in these systems owing to a geometry-depend

Refining the VSEPR Model: Limits on the Lone Pair Size as Described by the Electron Localization Function.

To investigate exceptions to the VSEPR principle that species with asymmetric lone pairs have bond angles smaller than those of their idealized molecular shapes, we computationally optimized the structures of a wide variety of small molecules and polyatomic anions, including as many experimentally characterized structures as possible, and applied a topological analysis of the electron localization function (ELF) as well as Natural Bond Orbital analysis (NBO). Species were chosen to represent each valence shell electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) shape with asymmetric lone pairs on the central atom

Bis[μ-O-isopropyl (4-eth-oxy-phen-yl)dithio-phospho-nato-κ(2) S:S']bis-{[O-iso-propyl (4-eth-oxy-phen-yl)dithio-phos-phonato-κ(2) S,S']mercury(II)}.

The title compound, [Hg2(C11H16O2PS2)4], is a dinuclear complex with a distorted tetra-hedral geometry around each Hg(II) atom. Although the two Hg(II) atoms are surrounded by the same ligand, two different coordination modes are observed: one is chelating and the other bridging. The Hg-S bonds form two distinct pairs of long and short bonds. One pair includes both chelating and bridging Hg-S bonds with approximately equal bond lengths of 2.4042 (8) and 2.3997 (7) Å, respectively. The other pair is significantly longer at 2.9361 (9) and 2.8105 (8) Å, respectively. This pattern forms a center o

Cooperative Bond Activation and Catalytic CO2 Functionalization with a Geometrically Constrained Bis(silylene)-Stabilized Borylene.

Metal-ligand cooperativity has emerged as an important strategy to tune the reactivity of transition-metal complexes for the catalysis and activation of small molecules. Studies of main-group compounds, however, are scarce. Here, we report the synthesis, structural characterization, and reactivity of a geometrically constrained bis(silylene)-stabilized borylene. The one-pot reaction of [(SiNSi)Li(OEt2)] (SiNSi = 4,5-bis(silylene)-2,7,9,9-tetramethyl-9H-acridin-10-ide) with 1 equiv of [BBr3(SMe2)] in toluene at room temperature followed by reduction with 2 equiv of potassium graphite (KC8) lead

Separation increases passive stress-coping behaviors during forced swim and alters hippocampal dendritic morphology in California mice.

Individuals within monogamous species form bonds that may buffer against the negative effects of stress on physiology and behavior. In some species, involuntary termination of the mother-offspring bond results in increased symptoms of negative affect in the mother, suggesting that the parent-offspring bond may be equally as important as the pair bond. To our knowledge, the extent to which affect in paternal rodents is altered by involuntary termination of the father-offspring bond is currently unknown. Here, we investigated to what extent separation and paternal experience alters passive stres

Local charge-displacement analysis: Targeting local charge-flows in complex intermolecular interactions.

Charge-displacement (CD) analysis has recently proven to be a simple and powerful scheme for quantitatively analyzing the profile the charge redistribution occurring upon intermolecular interactions along a given interaction axis. However, when two molecular fragments bind through complex interactions involving multiple concurrent charge flows, ordinary CD analysis is capable of providing only an averaged picture of the related charge-flow profiles and no detailed information on each of them. In this article, we combine CD analysis with a Hirshfeld partitioning of the molecular charge redistri

Isolation of a phosphinidene sulfide and selenide.

We describe the synthesis of an isolable phosphinidene sulfide and phosphinidene selenide (BnArNP[double bond, length as m-dash]Ch; Ch = S, Se) by reaction of a sterically protected phosphinidene oxide (BnArNP[double bond, length as m-dash]O) with Lawesson's or Woollins' reagents, respectively. These compounds reveal short P[double bond, length as m-dash]E bonds consistent with a high degree of pπ-pπ double bond character. The pendant amido group on the phosphorus atom plays an important role in their stabilization through nitrogen lone pair donation into the P-Ch π* orbital, and evidence for

Reaction-Coordinate Analysis of DMAP-Mediated Allylation of Allylic Alcohols: Coupled Proton Transfer and C-C Bond Formation.

Density functional theory calculations reveal that the DMAP-mediated allylation of cyclic Baylis-Hillman alcohols proceeds through a concerted substitution pathway in which proton transfer is directly coupled to bond reorganization, as an alternative to stepwise pathways involving discrete ionization. Although formation of an allylic cation has been invoked to rationalize this transformation, the energetic feasibility of ionization under neutral conditions has not been explicitly examined. Intrinsic reaction-coordinate (IRC) analysis provides direct insight into how proton transfer and bond re

Fragmentation of nitrone triflates to 9-membered rings.

A new fragmentative rearrangement of nitrone derivatives to form 9-membered rings is reported. The fragmentations are triggered when nitrones are treated with triflic anhydride; a C-C bond antiperiplanar to the cleaving N-O bond is activated either by an oxygen lone pair or by an electron-rich aromatic ring. In the former case, further cyclization of the 9-membered intermediate leads to a rearranged condensed ring system, but when triggered by arenes, 9-membered ring amides are isolated.

Dopamine and monogamy.

Social attachments play a central role in human society. In fact, such attachments are so important that deficits in the ability to form meaningful social bonds are associated with a variety of psychological disorders. Although mother-infant bonding has been studied for many years, we only recently have begun to examine the processes that underlie social bonds between adults. Over the past decade, central dopamine has become a focus of such research, especially its role in pair bonding between mates in species that display monogamous life strategies. Neuroanatomical and pharmacological studies

Hydrogen-atom transfer in reactions of organic radicals with [Co(II)(por)]* (por = porphyrinato) and in subsequent addition of [Co(H)(por)] to olefins.

The mechanisms for hydrogen-atom transfer from the cyanoisopropyl radical (*)C(CH(3))(2)CN to [Co(II)(por)](*) (yielding [Co(III)(H)(por)] and CH(2)=C(CH(3))(CN); por = porphyrinato) and the insertion of vinyl acetate (CH(2)=CHOAc) into the Co-H bond of [Co(H)(por)] (giving [Co(III){CH(OAc)CH(3)}(por)]) were investigated by DFT calculations. The results are compared with experimental data. These reactions are relevant to catalytic chain transfer (CCT) in radical polymerization of olefins mediated by [Co(II)(por)](*), the formation and homolysis of organo-cobalt complexes that mediate living ra

The costs of extra-pair behaviours in birds.

Extra-pair behaviours - reproductive behaviours, including those related to copulation and paternity of offspring, amongst animals outside of a social pair bond - have long intrigued behavioural ecologists, particularly from the female animal's perspective. Female extra-pair paternity is not supported by classic models of sexual selection yet is common across birds. Researchers recognise that variation in extra-pair paternity, both within and between species, is in part driven by the costs to the individual; however, empirical studies tend to focus on benefits. This is because benefits are oft

A Free Phosphaborene Stable at Room Temperature.

Free phosphaborenes (R-P═B-R) are PB analogues of alkynes, and their isolation is a long-sought-after goal. Herein, we demonstrate that the combination of a π-donating and a π-accepting substituent with bulky flanking arene rings enables the isolation of a crystalline free phosphaborene 5 at room temperature. This electron push-pull cooperation, combined with the kinetic protection, hinders its inherent tendency to oligomerize. This species features a PB double bond consisting of a conventional σ bond and a delocalized π bond. The lone pair of electrons at P slightly contributes to the PB bond

Magnetic isotope effect in the photolysis of organotin compounds.

Photolysis of organotin molecules RSnMe3 is shown to be a spin selective radical reaction accompanied by fractionation of magnetic, (117,119)Sn, and nonmagnetic, (118,120)Sn, isotopes between starting reagents and products. A primary photolysis process is a homolytic cleavage of the C-Sn bond and generation of a triplet radical pair as a spin-selective nanoreactor. Nuclear spin dependent triplet-singlet conversion of the pair results in the tin isotope fractionation. Experimentally detected isotope distribution unambiguously demonstrates that the classical, mass-dependent isotope effect is neg

Reactivity of an arsanyl-phosphagallene: decarbonylation of CO2 and COS to form phosphaketenes.

By contrast, reactions with CO2, CS2 and COS are more intriguing, revealing a reactivity profile in which the phosphorus atom can abstrac

Ability of Lewis Acids with Shallow σ-Holes to Engage in Chalcogen Bonds in Different Environments.

Molecules of the type XYT = Ch (T = C, Si, Ge; Ch = S, Se; X,Y = H, CH3, Cl, Br, I) contain a σ-hole along the T = Ch bond extension. This hole can engage with the N lone pair of NCH and NCCH3 so as to form a chalcogen bond. In the case of T = C, these bonds are rather weak, less than 3 kcal/mol, and are slightly weakened in acetone or water. They owe their stability to attractive electrostatic energy, supplemented by dispersion, and a much smaller polarization term. Immersion in solvent reverses the electrostatic interaction to repulsive, while amplifying the polarization energy. The σ-holes

Approaching cumulative quintuple bonds in all-metal uranyl analogs.

While the progression from single (H2), double (O2) and triple (N2) bonds in diatomic molecules to the discovery of transition metal quadruple (Re-Re) and quintuple (Cr-Cr) bonds has significantly expanded our understanding of covalent interactions, the exploration of cumulative multiple bonds in trinuclear systems has remained largely unexplored. Until now, cumulative bonds beyond triple multiplicity have neither been experimentally isolated nor theoretically predicted. Here, we propose a new bonding model-cumulative quintuple bonds-and report the synthesis and characterization of a novel tri

Stability of dark state rhodopsin is mediated by a conserved ion pair in intradiscal loop E-2.

The rhodopsin crystal structure reveals that intradiscal loop E-2 covers the 11-cis-retinal, creating a "retinal plug." Recently, we noticed the ends of loop E-2 are linked by an ion pair between residues Arg-177 and Asp-190, near the highly conserved disulfide bond. This ion pair appears biologically significant; it is conserved in almost all vertebrate opsins and may occur in other G-protein-coupled receptors. We report here that the Arg-177/Asp-190 ion pair is critical for the folding and stability of dark state rhodopsin. We find ion pair mutants that regenerate with retinal are functional
