Paleopathology in osseous remains from the 16th century. A survey of rheumatic diseases.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the rheumatic conditions found in skeletal remains of Amerindian ancestry disinterred from a 16th century Mexican cemetery. METHODS: A physical anthropologist and 2 rheumatologists surveyed the recovered skeletal remains. RESULTS: We examined the skeletal remains of 443 subjects. We found 19 cases of Pott's disease, 17 of osteoarthrosis in various anatomical locations, 2 spondyloarthropathies, probably ankylosing spondylitis or diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis, one probable septic arthritis in the stemoclavicular joint, and 2 compression fractures of the spine.

Paleopathology Meets Public Health: Deep-Time Syndemics and the Ecology of Emerging Infections.

Why do pandemics keep emerging despite decades of surveillance and response? Paleopathology, the study of disease traces in ancient remains, has been revolutionized by ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis and next-generation sequencing (NGS). Reconstructing pathogen genomes from archaeological material enables the identification of extinct lineages, the refinement of disease chronologies, and the characterization of long-term host-pathogen co-evolution. This provides context for public health challenges, including the emergence of pandemics and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Infectious diseases are in

Paleopathology of the skull of Santorio Santorio, father of modern clinical experimental physiology.

The University of Padua (Italy) preserves the skull of Santorio Santorio, father of the modern clinical experimental physiology. A recent study performed with modern anthropological methods and medical instruments (CT scan) revealed the presence of a lobular formation in the left temporal bone, with an irregular morphology, internal bone sequestrum, a well-defined non-continuous sclerosis and both internal and external thinning of the cranial plate. Three oval depressions observed in the cranial vault, edentulism and moderate osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint were also investigated

Age-related disease or disease-related age? Perspectives for paleopathological research.

OBJECTIVE: The interconnection of biological aging and disease throughout the life course profoundly affects almost every aspect of paleopathological research but is rarely explored. This paper presents a theoretical and practical framework for an informed research approach that explicitly acknowledges these complex interrelationships. METHODS: We discuss the existing concept of age-related disease and introduce the new concept of disease-related age. Their relevance and practical applicability are demonstrated through selected paleopathological examples, which propose modifications to existi

Human major infections: Tuberculosis, treponematoses, leprosy-A paleopathological perspective of their evolution.

The key to evolution is reproduction. Pathogens can either kill the human host or can invade the host without causing death, thus ensuring their own survival, reproduction and spread. Tuberculosis, treponematoses and leprosy are widespread chronic infectious diseases whereby the host is not immediately killed. These diseases are examples of the co-evolution of host and pathogen. They can be well studied as the paleopathological record is extensive, spanning over 200 human generations. The paleopathology of each disease has been well documented in the form of published synthetic analyses record

Paleoparasitology and paleopathology. Synergies for reconstructing the past of human infectious diseases and their pathocenosis.

Paleopathology, a discipline studying human and animal diseases of the past, developed at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1910, the father of the discipline, Sir Marc Armand Ruffer, was the first paleopathologist to describe a human parasitic disease; urinary shistosomiasis on Egyptian mummies dating from the Dynastic period. Therefore, paleopathology and paleoparasitology have the same roots. However, since the beginning, these two fields did not evolve at the same scale, as the demography of paleopathologists, combined with that of anthropologists, increased much faster than the commun

Evolution of human tuberculosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis of paleopathological evidence.

Tuberculosis is a re-emerging disease and is a major problem in both developing and developed countries today. An estimated one third of the world's population is infected and almost two million people die from the disease each year. Bone lesions occur in 3-5% of active tuberculosis cases and can be used to diagnose the disease in ancient skeletal remains. A meta-analysis was conducted on 531 palaeopathological tuberculosis cases from 221 sites (7250 BCE to 1899) on all continents for the purpose of testing two hypotheses; (1) the frequency of bone lesions does not change through time and (2)

Thundering hoofbeats and dazzling zebras: A model integrating current rare disease perspectives in paleopathology.

OBJECTIVE: The article reviews the study of rare diseases and their nomenclature, emerging government policies and initiatives, and the concerns voiced by the modern rare disease communities. An interpretive model is then presented for the bioarchaeological interpretations of individuals with paleopathological evidence of rare diseases. MATERIALS: In demonstration of the application of the proposed framework, we evaluate the skeletal remains of an adult female (EZ 3-7-1) excavated in the 1980s from the Middle Woodland (50BCE-CE400) context of the Elizabeth site (11PK512) in the lower Illinois

Dental paleopathology and agricultural intensification in south Asia: new evidence from Bronze Age Harappa.

Patterns of dental disease among Bronze Age people of the Indus Valley Civilization are currently based on early and incomplete reports by non-specialists. This deficiency precludes accurate diachronic analysis of dental disease and its relationship with increasing agriculturalism in the Indian subcontinent. The objective of this paper is to document prevalence of dental disease at Harappa (2500-2000 B.C.), Punjab Province, Pakistan, comparatively evaluate the Harappan dental pathology profile, and use these data to assess theories regarding the dental health consequences of increasingly inten

Diagnostic Methods Used in Detecting Poliomyelitis in Paleopathological Research-A Narrative Review.

OBJECTIVE: This review aims to describe the macroscopic methods used to detect poliomyelitis in human skeletal remains and to highlight the limitations of current diagnostic frameworks. MATERIALS: The reviewed materials consist of published paleopathological literature and case studies analyzing human skeletal remains for evidence of the disease. METHODS: We evaluated existing studies that focus on the macroscopic analysis of secondary skeletal alterations caused by paralysis, such as unilateral limb atrophy, bone shortening, pronounced asymmetry, and compensatory hypertrophy. RESULTS: Curr

Diagnostic Methods Used in Detecting Syphilis in Paleopathological Research-A Literature Review.

Syphilis is a disease caused by Treponema pallidum. It is primarily transmitted sexually or vertically during pregnancy. The origin is twofold, namely, it comes from America or Europe. Syphilis was first recorded in a human skeleton in the 11th century. However, signs of treponemal disease were observed in osteological material from a Pleistocene bear. Hence, it is necessary to study syphilis on bone material to better understand the etiology of the above disease and, consequently, introduce preventive measures. Examination of syphilis on skeletal material can be performed at the macroscopic a

Is the promontory a promising site to diagnose otitis media in paleopathology? A search for evidence.

OBJECTIVE: The promontory of the middle ear was recently suggested to be an appropriate site for diagnosing otitis media (OM) in archaeological bones by endoscopic inspection. The present study scrutinized the underlying assumption that a bulgy, irregular promontorial surface represents a pathological condition. MATERIALS: We compared an allegedly healthy individual and an allegedly diseased individual in skeletal remains of two human individuals from the early Medieval period in Germany. METHODS: The specimens were studied using microscopic analyses of thin ground sections. RESULTS: The os

Paleopathological study of a podal osteochondroma from the prehistoric Hypogeum of Calaforno (Sicily).

In this article, we report a case of isolated podal osteochondroma from the prehistoric Hypogeum of Calaforno (Giarratana, Ragusa, Sicily). Although the phalanx exhibiting the benign tumoral mass comes from a context featuring several commingled remains, the very good state of preservation of this bone allowed us to perform a comprehensive study of the neoplasm by applying a multidisciplinary approach encompassing archeology, morphology, stereomicroscopy, and radiology. The results from this very ancient specimen have been assessed in the light of the available paleopathological literature and

Paleopathological and biomolecular study of tuberculosis in a medieval skeletal collection from England.

Nine human skeletons of medieval date from a rural English burial site show signs of skeletal tuberculosis. They were subject to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays aimed at detecting traces of DNA from infecting mycobacteria, with the purpose both of confirming the paleopathological diagnosis of tuberculosis and determining in individual cases whether disease was due to M. tuberculosis or M. bovis. In all nine cases, evidence for M. tuberculosis complex DNA was found, and in all instances it appeared that disease was due to M. tuberculosis rather than M. bovis. The significance of the find

A critical review of the anthropological and paleopathological literature on osteopetrosis as an ancient rare disease (ARD).

OBJECTIVE: A reappraisal of the available evidence of osteopetrosis in the archaeological record as first step in promoting new approaches to rare diseases in paleopathology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three different approaches are combined: a survey of the last 50 years of bioarchaeological publications; an online search addressing six of the more widely used search engines; macroscopic and radiographic analyses of the human remains from the Neolithic site of Palata 2 (Italy). RESULTS: The combined results of the literature survey and the online search identified six cases of osteopetrosis. Th

Radiological evidence of Goldenhar syndrome in a paleopathological case from a South German ossuary.

We investigated the skull of a juvenile living in Southern Germany between 1400 and 1800 A.D. A remarkable hemifacial microsomia led to further detailed computed tomographic examination especially of the petrous bone revealing a total bony atresia of the external auditory canal as well as distinct anomalies of the middle ear on the same side. The combination of these findings strongly suggests the diagnosis of Goldenhar syndrome. This very heterogeneous syndrome affects primarily aural, ocular, oral and mandibular development, whereby the constellation of anomalies indicate their origin at app

An Investigation of Micro-CT Analysis of Bone as a New Diagnostic Method for Paleopathological Cases of Osteomalacia.

OBJECTIVE: This paper looks to broaden the methodological possibilities for diagnosing osteomalacia in archaeological bone using micro-CT analysis. Increasing the identification of osteomalacia in paleopathology will provide support for important interpretive frameworks. MATERIALS: Nine embedded and two unembedded rib fragments were sourced from St. Martin's Birmingham and Ancaster, UK, and Lisieux Michelet, France. Of the 11 samples, nine were previously confirmed as osteomalacic, and presented with varying levels of diagenesis and two were non-osteomalacic controls, one of which exhibits di
