The implementation and initial evaluation of a physical therapy program for captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Due to advances in captive nonhuman primate (NHP) medical care, the number of geriatric chimpanzees (≥35-years old) is growing. With old age comes a variety of physical conditions, including arthritis, stroke, and mobility impairments. Programs aimed at enhancing the welfare of geriatric chimpanzees are now quite common, but there are few published empirical evaluations of the efficacy of such programs. The current study aimed to create, implement, and evaluate the effects of participation in a physical therapy (PT) program on physical health, mobility, welfare, and behavior. Nine chimpanzees

[Comparison of the Latissimus dorsi insertions on the iliac crest in chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) and in man].

INTRODUCTION: Comparing to other primates, one of the most important specificities of the human anatomy are consequences of bipedalism. Although bone consequences are well known (lumbar lordosis, horizontal position of the foramen magnum, lengthening of the lower limbs, reduction of the pelvis, specialization of the foot), consequences of our locomotion on the Latissimus dorsi are still unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One dissection of a chimpanzee Latissimus dorsi (Pan troglodytes) has been performed and compared to 30 human Latissimus dorsi dissections (10 fresh cadavers and 20 formoled cad

Survey of Behavioral Indices of Welfare in Research Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in the United States.

Chimpanzees demand specialized housing and care and the highest degree of attention to animal welfare. The current project used a survey method to collate information on chimpanzee housing and behavioral indices of welfare across all 6 of the chimpanzee research facilities in the United States. Data were compiled on 701 chimpanzees ranging from 2 to 62 y old (mean age, 26.0 y). All chimpanzees except for one were socially housed; the median group size was 7 animals, and group sizes ranged from 1 to 14. All of the subjects had access to outdoor spaces each day. Daily access to a natural substra

Effects of body region and time on hair cortisol concentrations in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Hair cortisol concentrations (HCC) are increasingly recognized as an integrated measure of the systemic cortisol secretion. Yet, we still know very little about confounding effects on HCC in animals. The present study therefore used hair from semi-wild and zoo living chimpanzees to investigate (1) intra-individual variability of HCC (body-region effect), and (2) the stability of HCC along the hair shaft (traditionally called the washout effect). Our results indicate that absolute HCC varied substantially between certain body regions, but a factor analysis revealed that these HCC differences we

Oral induction of anesthesia with droperidol and transmucosal carfentanil citrate in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Five chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) initially received oral droperidol sedation (1.25 mg for a juvenile chimpanzee, body wt = 18.5 kg, and 2.5 mg for adults, body wt >20 kg, range: 18.5-71 kg) followed by transmucosal carfentanil administration at 2.0 microg/kg. This preinduction regimen was developed to produce heavy sedation or even light anesthesia in order to eliminate the need for or at least minimize the stress of darting with tiletamine/zolazepam at 3 mg/kg i.m. This study was designed to assess the safety and efficacy of transmucosal carfentanil. Once each animal was unresponsive to ext

Comprehension of cause-effect relations in a tool-using task by chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Five chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) were tested to assess their understanding of causality in a tool task. The task consisted of a transparent tube with a trap-hole drilled in its middle. A reward was randomly placed on either side of the hole. Depending on which side the chimpanzee inserted the stick into, the candy was either pushed out of the tube or into the trap. In Experiment 1, the success rate of 2 chimpanzees rose highly above chance, but that of the other subjects did not. Results show that the 2 successful chimpanzees selected the correct side for insertion beforehand. Experiment 2 r

PROSPECTIVE POPULATION MANAGEMENT FOR HEPATITIS B IN THE CHIMPANZEE (PAN TROGLODYTES) SSP® POPULATION.

Hepatitis B virus causes horizontally transmitted infectious hepatopathy of primates and may progress to hepatocellular carcinoma. Historically, a small number of chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ) living in accredited North American zoos have been confirmed with positive hepatitis B serology consistent with exposure. However, the overall status for this population and the interpretation of these individual test results have not been established previously. The current U.S. zoo-housed population (n = 259) was assessed serologically for hepatitis B by surface protein antigen (HbsAg) and surface an

Stresses exerted in the hindlimb muscles of common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) during bipedal locomotion.

Recent studies have indicated that chimpanzee bipedality is mechanically inefficient and dynamically unlike that of humans, thus undermining the chimpanzee analogy for mechanical aspects of the early evolution of hominid bipedalism. This paper continues this theme by measuring the forces and stresses engendered by the muscles during bipedal locomotion, for an untrained chimpanzee and for data from chimpanzees which have been encouraged to walk bipedally, presented in the literature. Peak stresses in the triceps surae were lower for the untrained chimpanzee than for the trained subjects because

Diagrammatic representation for chromosomal mutagenesis studies. III. Radiation-induced rearrangements in Pan troglodytes (chimpanzee).

A qualitative study is presented of chromosomal rearrangements induced by gamma-irradiation at 2 Gy and 3 Gy in peripheral blood lymphocytes of the chimpanzee Pan troglodytes. From a sample of 460 cells, karyotyped after R-banding, 1047 rearrangements were detected. Each type of rearrangement is analyzed according to the diagrammatic method previously developed. The non-random nature of the induction of the rearrangements is clear. The chimpanzee seems highly sensitive to the induction of dicentrics. This may be related to the existence, in its karyotype, of sensitive juxta-telomeric heterochr

Association between precentral gyrus morphology and modality-specific intentional communication in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

The precentral gyrus (preCG) is morphologically defined posteriorly by the central sulcus (CS) and anteriorly by the superior and inferior precentral sulci (preCS). Stimulation of the preCG along the dorsal-ventral plane elicits motor activation across the body in a topographic manner. In this study, we used postimage analyses to characterize the shape of the CS and preCS in a sample of 278 magnetic resonance image scans of chimpanzees. Using these data, we initially described the six most prominent preCG shapes variants, their asymmetries, and heritability. We also tested for their associatio

Sex differences in health burdens across the lifespan in wild chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii).

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Understanding health and aging in one of our closest relatives, wild chimpanzees, provides key insights into the evolutionary origins of human disease risk. In humans, females often experience higher rates of disease than men despite having longer lifespans. Here we examine age- and sex- related patterns of health burdens in three communities of wild chimpanzees to investigate whether males exhibit health disadvantages, as predicted by life history trade-offs, or whether females exhibit health disadvantages in line with the health-survival paradox. METHODOLOGY: We a

Serum vitamin D in sanctuary chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) in range countries: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D is essential for skeletal health, calcium homeostasis and general health. The major and more stable form of vitamin D in circulation is 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D); this is the most valuable indicator of vitamin D status. There are studies on laboratory and zoo-housed chimpanzees; however, serum vitamin D status has not been documented in chimpanzees in range countries. OBJECTIVES: (1) Determine the range of circulating 25-OH-D concentrations in chimpanzees in range countries. (2) Assess the influence of age, sex, and sun exposure on 25-OH-D serum concentrations. Molecular evidence for sustained transmission of zoonotic Ascaris suum among zoo chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

Chimpanzees in the Copenhagen Zoo frequently excrete ascarid worms onto the cage floor in spite of a regular anthelmintic treatment program. Previously it had been shown that the source of the infections was of pig origin. However, it was unknown whether the recurrence of the infection was due to reintroduction of eggs from an external source or to a sustained transmission cycle within the zoo. We found that isolated eggs were able to embryonate to the infective J3 stage and PCR-RFLP analysis on the ITS region amplified from single embryonated eggs suggest these to be Ascaris suum. In addition

Diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension and atrial fibrillation in an adult chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes).

This report describes the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in an adult male captive chimpanzee. Although cardiovascular disease in general is common in human and great apes, diagnosis and treatment of PAH in nonhuman primates are uncommon. In the case we present, the adult chimpanzee was diagnosed with an arrhythmia during an annual physical examination and later with PAH during a scheduled cardiovascular evaluation. PAH can either be primary or secondary and can lead to right ventricular overload and heart failure. This description is the first case study of pu

Diagnosis and treatment of ocular coccidioidomycosis in a female captive chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes): a case study.

We report here the first documented case of ocular coccidioidomycosis in a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes). In 1996, a 12-year-old female chimpanzee was undergoing treatment with an experimental triazole, BayR3783, for coccidioidomycosis when she was diagnosed with severe conjunctivitis in the right eye. Subsequent development of a coccidioidal granuloma of the ventral conjunctiva and anterior uvea was noted over the next several months, distorting the lens, iris, pupil, and sclera and progressing to uveitis. Treatment with BayR3783 and subconjunctival injections of triamcinolone were successful

Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 and Prolactin Levels in Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) Across the Lifespan.

As human and chimpanzee genomes show high homology for IGF1 and PRL, we analyzed the sera of 367 healthy chimpanzees obtained during routine physical examinations in a single colony and measured chimpanzee insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 and prolactin (PRL) levels across the lifespan using standard human immunoassays. Assuming chimpanzee IGF-1 levels peak during puberty as in humans, we randomly defined puberty as the age at which most IGF-1 levels were equal to or above the 90th percentile for each sex (males, ages ≥7.00 but <9.20 years; females, ≥5.00 but <8.00 years). IGF-1 levels steadi

Morphological variation in adult chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus) of the Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire.

Twenty five adult chimpanzee skeletons (Pan troglodytes verus) of known age and sex (15 females, 10 males) from a long-term study site in Taï National Park, Cote d'Ivoire present new data on variation. These skeletons provide a rare opportunity to measure the cranium and postcranium from the same individuals. We compare measurements and indices of the Taï sample with those of relatively complete Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii skeletons from Gombe National Park, Tanzania. Measurements of Pan paniscus are included as an outside comparison. The Taï and Gombe samples are analyzed by sex; combined

Is genetic drift to blame for testicular dysgenesis syndrome in Semliki chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii)?

BACKGROUND: We present 3 likely cases of testicular dysgenesis syndrome (TDS) within a community of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii). We tested whether genetic drift may be the culprit, as a genetic cause has been suspected to account for TDS among other wildlife. METHODS: We successfully sequenced a 367-bp segment spanning the first hypervariable region within the D-loop of the mitochondrial genome for 78 DNA samples. RESULTS: We found 24 polymorphic sequence sites consisting of 7 singletons and 17 parsimony informative sites. This sample contained 9 haplotypes with a diversity

Timing of ectocranial suture activity in Pan troglodytes as related to cranial volume and dental eruption.

Research has shown that Pan and Homo have similar ectocranial suture synostosis patterns possibly because of their phylogenetic relationship. However, unlike human data, it is unclear if the ontogeny of suture activity for Pan exhibits a relationship with the expanding neurocranium or the masticatory apparatus. These relationships were assessed by examining the associations between ectocranial suture status and morphology and cranial volume (as a proxy for neurocranial expansion) and dental development (as an indicator of adulthood and proxy for masticatory influence) in a large sample of Pan
