Chagas disease in the Brazilian Amazon: IV. a new cross-sectional study.

A new conglomerate family sample of 194 dwellings with 996 resident persons were studied in the town of Barcelos, State of Amazonas, in order to re-evaluate the risk of Chagas disease. During the survey the persons were interviewed and in this occasion we showed to them a collection of Panstrongylus, Rhodnius and Triatoma, asking if they recognized and eventually have been bitten by this kind of bugs. At this time we collected 500 ul of blood in microtainer tubes from 886 interviewed persons who gave permission after informed consent. A screening test for T. cruzi antibodies based on agglutina

Mitochondrial genomes of three kissing bugs (Reduviidae: Triatominae) and their phylogenetic implications.

The reduviid subfamily Triatominae, also called kissing bugs, are vectors of Chagas disease, which is one of the most seriously neglected tropical parasitic diseases. Only three complete mitochondrial genomes of kissing bugs from the genus Triatoma have been sequenced to date. To better understand the diversity of mitochondrial genomes and the evolution of kissing bugs, mitochondrial genomes of three kissing bugs, Triatoma migrans, Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus, and Rhodnius pictipes, were sequenced using next-generation sequencing and a comparative mitochondrial genomic analysis of three gen

Trypanosoma cruzi isolated from a triatomine found in one of the biggest metropolitan areas of Latin America.

INTRODUCTION: To characterize Trypanosoma cruzi (TcI) isolated from a Panstrongylus megistus specimen found in one of the biggest metropolitan areas of Latin America, the relationship between the TcI group of T. cruzi and the transmission cycle in the urban environment was studied. METHODS: The T. cruzi strain, Pm, was isolated in a culture medium from the evolutionary forms present in the hindgut of a live male specimen of P. megistus found in the Jabaquara subway in São Paulo City. The sample from the triatomine showed trypomastigote forms of Trypanosomatidae, which were inoculated in the p

Risks associated with dispersive nocturnal flights of sylvatic Triatominae to artificial lights in a model house in the northeastern plains of Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Control initiatives and continuous surveillance of vector-borne transmission have proved to be effective measures for diminishing the incidence of Chagas disease in endemic countries. However, the active dispersal of infected sylvatic adult triatomines by flight represents one of the main obstacles to eliminating domestic transmission. METHODS: In order to determine the risk that active dispersal of sylvatic adult triatomines represents in Colombian northeastern plains, we quantified the distribution and abundance of triatomines in palm trees (primarily Attalea butyracea) using li

American trypanosomiasis.

American trypanosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by the flagellate protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. Chagas disease is endemic in Latin America, where an estimated 10-14 million people are infected, and an emerging disease in Europe and the USA. Trypanosoma cruzi is transmitted by blood-sucking bugs of the family Reduviidae. Rhodnius prolixus, Panstrongylus megistus, Triatoma infestans, and T. dimidiata are the main vectors in the sylvatic cycle. Non vector-borne transmission includes blood transfusion, congenital and oral transmission, transplantation, and accidental infections. Most cases o

On the possibility of autochthonous Chagas disease in Roraima, Amazon region, Brazil, 2000-2001.

Chagas disease has been almost entirely eradicated from the arid zones in Central and Northeastern Brazil where rare or no autochthonous cases have been reported. However, in the last 10 years the disease has increasingly been registered in the Amazon Region. Aiming to investigate the possibility of the occurrence of autochthonous cycle of Chagas disease in Roraima, triatomine collections, vectorial susceptibility studies (this one to be shown elsewhere), parasitological and serological analyses were conducted in three agricultural settlement areas (Rorainópolis, Passarão Project and Ilha Comm

Epidemiology of Chagas disease in Ecuador. A brief review.

Chagas disease is a complex public health problem that has been underestimated in Ecuador. Here we review the relevant published information, and present unpublished and new data that help to understand the current Chagas disease epidemiological situation and its evolution in the country. Three main characteristics have been identified: (i) persistence of Trypanosoma cruzi transmission in already known foci; (ii) a marked endemicity in some urban areas of Guayaquil; and (iii) the transformation of new Amazon foci into truly endemic areas. The situation in other suspect areas remains uncertain.

Triatomine fauna in the state of Bahia, Brazil: What changed after 40 years of the vector-control program?

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases are a growing threat to global health, and endemic Chagas disease has emerged as one of the most important health problems in America. The main strategy to prevent Trypanosoma cruzi transmission is chemical control of vectors. This study presents a descriptive analysis of synanthropic triatomines before and after the implementation of a vector-control program in Bahia, Brazil. METHODS: Descriptive analysis and geospatial statistics were performed on triatomine data, (1) the relative abundance and (2) proportional spatial distribution, from Bahia during

Orally-transmitted Chagas disease: Epidemiological, clinical, serological and molecular outcomes of a school microepidemic in Chichiriviche de la Costa, Venezuela.

Oral transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi is a frequent cause of acute Chagas disease (ChD). In the present cross-sectional study, we report the epidemiological, clinical, serological and molecular outcomes of the second largest outbreak of oral ChD described in the literature. It occurred in March 2009 in Chichiriviche de la Costa, a rural seashore community at the central littoral in Venezuela. The vehicle was an artisanal guava juice prepared at the local school and Panstrongylus geniculatus was the vector involved. TcI genotype was isolated from patients and vector; some showed a mixture of h

Susceptibility of different triatomine species to Trypanosoma rangeli experimental infection.

Trypanosoma rangeli is a kinetoplastid protozoan parasite that has been found in the majority of Latin American countries, overlapping its distribution area with that of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. This parasite shares the same reservoirs and vectors as T. cruzi. Triatomines from genus Rhodnius are considered the most susceptible hosts to infection. In this work, we report the susceptibility of different triatomine species (Rhodnius neglectus, Panstrongylus megistus, Triatoma infestans, T. sordida, T. braziliensis, and T. vitticeps) to experimental infection by T.

Inter-relation of sylvatic and domestic transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi in areas with and without domestic vectorial transmission in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

During the period 1980-1986, we captured triatomine bugs and mammalian reservoir hosts from sylvatic and domestic situations in different municipalities of the State of Minas Gerais. Trypanosoma cruzi was isolated from captured bugs, mammals and patients. After cultivation in LIT medium, the electrophoretic enzyme profiles were determined. We obtained a total of 32 parasite isolates from regions with active domestic transmission, and 24 isolates from areas under control. For the first areas the results suggest introduction of T. cruzi from sylvatic habitats, through incursion of infected oposs

Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and isoenzyme analysis of Trypanosoma rangeli strains.

Sixteen Trypanosoma rangeli strains were compared by isoenzyme and randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. Eight strains were isolated from either Rhodnius prolixus or Homo sapiens from Honduras, Colombia and Venezuela. Another eight strains were isolated from either Panstrongylus megistus or the rodent Echimys dasythrix from the State of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. All six T. rangeli strains isolated from P. megistus were co-infections with Trypanosoma cruzi, demonstrating an overlap of the sylvatic cycles of these parasites and that the accurate identification of species is

Metabolic signatures of triatomine vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi unveiled by metabolomics.

Chagas disease is a trypanosomiasis whose causative agent is the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which is transmitted to humans by hematophagous insects known as triatomines and affects a large proportion of South America. The digestive tract of the insect vectors in which T. cruzi develops constitutes a dynamic environment that affects the development of the parasite. Thus, we set out to investigate the chemical composition of the triatomine intestinal tract through a metabolomics approach. We performed Direct Infusion Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry on fecal

Microdistribution of sylvatic triatomine populations in central-coastal Ecuador.

Chagas disease is a serious public health problem in Ecuador, where nearly 230,000 individuals show Trypanosoma cruzi infection. Sylvatic T. cruzi transmission is a threat to current control strategies. This is because of the possibility of house reinfestation by sylvatic triatomines after insecticide treatment. This work quantified the spatial distribution of triatomines in sylvatic habitats and its relationship with nearby human dwellings. A simple random sampling design using live-baited traps and manual searches for triatomines was used in areas near human communities in Manabi province, E
