Despite the numerous advancements in cardiac implantable electronic defibrillator (CIED) designs and implantation techniques, device-related infections continue to represent significant morbidity and mortality. Although Gram-positive bacteria remain the most commonly reported organisms, various other bacterial families have been reported. We describe a 61-year-old patient with a history of non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy who presented with implantable cardioverter defibrillator pocket infection due to Stenotrophomonas maltophilia and Pantoea calida that developed a few days following the device g

Pantoea agglomerans infections in humans are uncommon. Most common infections reported are septic arthritis or synovitis. We report the case of a 25-year-old, healthy male, who presented with indurated swelling over the posterolateral aspect of his right thigh, associated with pain for one month. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed muscle edema with cystic areas in the posterior-most part of the vastus lateralis of the right thigh. The condition was clinically diagnosed as a right-sided benign tumor of the vastus lateralis muscle. However, Pantoea agglomerans was isolated on a culture of

The attraction of washed, medium-free cells of Pantoea (Enterobacter) agglomerans to wild, adult Rhagoletis mendax Curran, the blueberry maggot fly, was evaluated in managed blueberry fields in Maine. Attraction was evaluated using Pherocon AM and Ladd traps, each tested with or without washed bacterial cells. Field studies showed significant increases in fly captures on the Pherocon AM traps. Apple volatiles odors on Ladd traps seemed to cancel the effects of bacterial odors. Aerobic heterotrophic bacteria were isolated and identified from alimentary organs within wild R. mendax. Isolates ind

BACKGROUND: Bacteria in the Pantoea genus are plant and soil associated Gram-negative rods described as nosocomial pathogens and as rare causes of community-acquired infections. The latter have been classically associated with gardening and plant thorn injuries and immunocompromised states are additional risk factors. We report a patient with pica and geophagia, Pantoea sepsis, and sickle cell crisis, associations not previously described.
CASE REPORT: A 23-year-old pregnant female presented to the emergency department with sickle cell pain crisis. On the third day of hospitalization the pati

BACKGROUND: Totally implantable venous access ports (PORTs) are indispensable for oncology patients and others requiring prolonged intravenous therapy, eliminating repeated venipuncture and offering durable, low-maintenance vascular access. However, device-related infection remains the most frequent complication. Pantoea agglomerans (P. agglomerans), an environmental, plant-associated bacterium, rarely causes human disease, and reports of P. agglomerans colonization specifically within the PORT reservoir are scarce.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 72-year-old Asian female who was un

BACKGROUND: The lipopeptide herbicolin A (HA) secreted by the biocontrol agent Pantoea agglomerans ZJU23 is a promising antifungal drug to combat fungal pathogens by targeting lipid rafts, both in agricultural and clinical settings. Improvement of HA production would be of great significance in promoting its commercialization. This study aims to enhance the HA production in ZJU23 by combining fermentation optimization and strain engineering.
RESULTS: Based on the results in the single-factor experiments, corn steep liquor, temperature and initial pH were identified as the significant affectin

Species of Pantoea are mainly environmental strains and plant pathogens, rarely causing human infections. Here, we describe two cases of hemodialysis catheter-related bloodstream infection caused by Pantoea in patients with uremia. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of catheter related bloodstream infection caused by Pantoea dispersa (P. dispersa) in hemodialysis patients, as well as the first case of bloodstream infection caused by Pantoea anthophila (P. anthophila). Multiple blood cultures from the catheter showed the presence of Pantoea, and the isolated P. dispersa and P. an

BACKGROUND: Pantoea agglomerans is an environmental pathogen known to cause infection in immunocompromised individuals, particularly after thorn injuries. However, previous data showed few cases of human disease caused by contaminated medical products such as parenteral nutrition, anesthetic agents, blood, and peritoneal dialysis solutions. Infection in hemodialysis patients is rare. In this study, we presented a detailed account of several hemodialysis patients infected with this contagious pathogen and compared them with noninfected dialysis patients.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed th

Diabetes-related cognitive dysfunction (DRCD) is a serious complication induced by diabetes. However, there are currently no specific remedies for DRCD. Here, we show that streptozotocin-induced DRCD can be prevented without causing side effects through oral administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) derived from Pantoea agglomerans. Oral administration of LPS (OAL) prevented the cerebral cortex atrophy and tau phosphorylation induced by DRCD. Moreover, we observed that neuroprotective transformation of microglia (brain tissue-resident macrophages) is important for preventing DRCD through OAL.

Carotenoids are widely used in functional foods, cosmetics, and health supplements, and their importance and scope of use are continuously expanding. Here, we characterized carotenoid biosynthetic genes of the plant-pathogenic bacterium Pantoea ananatis, which carries a carotenoid biosynthetic gene cluster (including crtE, X, Y, I, B, and Z) on a plasmid. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis revealed that the crtEXYIB gene cluster is transcribed as a single transcript and crtZ is independently transcribed in the opposite direction. Using splicing by overlap extensi

The genus Pantoea forms a complex of more than 25 species, among which several cause diseases of various crop plants, including rice. Notably, strains of Pantoea ananatis and P. stewartii have been repeatedly reported to cause bacterial leaf blight of rice, whereas other authors have observed that P. agglomerans can also cause bacterial leaf blight of rice. The contribution of these and perhaps other species of Pantoea to plant diseases and yield losses of crop plants is currently not well documented, partly due to the lack of efficient diagnostic tools. Using 32 whole-genome sequences of the

Gram-negative bacteria of the genus Pantoea are emerging bacterial causes of diverse sporadic and outbreak-linked infections. Chronic Pantoea abscesses are unusual and may give rise to a differential diagnosis of malignancy. Foreign body retention and host immune defects may be risk factors for such chronic infections.

AIMS: To isolate plant growth-promoting bacterium from Western Ghat forests in India.
METHODS AND RESULTS: A Gram-negative, rod shaped, cream white coloured strain Pantoea NII-186 isolated from Western Ghat soil sample. The taxonomic position of the bacterium was confirmed by sequencing of 16S rRNA and phylogenetic analysis. A strain grew at a wide range of temperature ranging from 5-40 degrees C, but optimum growth was observed at 28-30 degrees C. It showed multiple plant growth-promoting attributes such as phosphate solubilization activity, indole acetic acid (IAA) production, siderophore p

Pantoea ananatis(P. ananatis) is a facultative anaerobic gram-negative bacillus in the Enterobacteriaceae. It is commonly found in plants, soil, and water, rarely causing human infection. Here, we present the first cerebrospinal fluid infection case caused by P. ananatis in humans. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of central nervous system infection caused by P. ananatis. A 49-year-old male patient presented with acute traumatic left parietal subdural hematoma and subarachnoid hemorrhage, for which he underwent emergent intracranial hematoma evacuation and decompressive cranie

Arthritis after plant injury is often apparently aseptic. We report two cases due to Pantoea agglomerans. In one case, the bacterium was isolated only from the pediatric blood culture media, BACTEC Peds Plus, monitored in BACTEC 9240, and not from the other media inoculated with the joint fluid. This procedure could help improve the diagnosis of septic arthritis.
