Two new cases of inverted urothelial papilloma in the upper urinary tract are described and added to the 22 cases previously reported in the literature. In both cases inverted papilloma was localized beneath macroscopic normal surface, and in one of the cases the changes were found scattered widely in the upper urinary tract. The possible etiology and the symptomatology are discussed, and the need for follow-up of these patients is emphasized.

Two cases of inverted papilloma, developed on the bladder neck in 36- and 23-year old males, are presented. From the Japanese literature, 40 cases of inverted papillomas have been collected and are reviewed. In addition, a review of the consecutive series of 173 pathological specimens, obtained by bladder biopsy and at the time of bladder surgery over the past 5 years disclosed a resembling lesion in two cases of bladder tumors. An inverted growth of transitional-cell carcinoma was observed in one case. Transitional-cell carcinoma with abundant microcysts was covered by the non-neoplastic tran

OBJECTIVE: To distinguish squamous cell carcinoma in inverted papilloma (IP-SCC) from IP, the utility of CT scoring system was investigated.
METHODS: We extracted cases histopathologically diagnosed with IP and IP-SCC of the sinonasal cavity from June 2004 to May 2021. Preoperative unenhanced CT images were used to evaluate the presence or absence of bone destruction and erosion: Score 1 = positive for bone destruction and/or erosion; Score 0 = negative for bone destruction and erosion. The CT scores in 10 sites of the sinonasal cavity and their adjacent areas were calculated.
RESULTS: Fifty

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Differentiating inverted papilloma (IP) from squamous cell carcinoma arising in IP (IP+SCC) is challenging when computed tomography (CT) demonstrates no bone destruction. This study aimed to identify CT and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features that distinguish IP from IP+SCC in cases without bone destruction on CT.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 30 patients with histologically confirmed sinonasal IP (n=15) or IP+SCC (n=15) who underwent preoperative CT and MRI between 2010 and 2023. Imaging variables assessed included tumor origin, tumor volume, CT enhanc

Primary middle ear inverted papilloma is an exceedingly rare finding posing a diagnostic challenge, as symptomatology often mimics common clinical entities like serous otitis media. Clinical and radiological findings are not specific, whilst high recurrence rates, local destruction, and potential malignant transformation constitute an overall demanding surgical challenge, requiring aggressive procedures. We report the case of a primary inverted papilloma of the middle ear, discussing diagnostic and therapeutic issues.

PURPOSE: Periocular inverted papilloma (IP) is a rare, locally aggressive tumor with a propensity for recurrence and malignant transformation. Historically treated via wide excision, this study examines the characteristics and management of periocular IP, comparing those confined to the nasolacrimal system with those invading the orbit.
METHODS: An Institutional Review Board-approved, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-compliant retrospective, comparative case series was conducted in patients with IP of the orbit or nasolacrimal system across 15 clinical sites.
RESULTS: Of 2

Inverted papilloma is a rare benign neoplasm that usually originates in the lateral nasal wall. It can be a locally aggressive lesion and invade nearby structures. While primarily a nasal neoplasm, cases of an inverted papilloma involving the temporal bone, pharynx, nasopharynx, and lacrimal sac have been reported. We describe the case of a 67-year-old man with a history of nasal inverted papilloma who presented with a recurrent nasal mass and a large mass on the left side of his upper neck. The patient's history included inverted papillomas in multiple locations: the temporal bone, the sinona

Inverted papilloma of the bladder is an uncommon urothelial neoplasm. Although it is traditionally regarded as a benign tumor, there are conflicting data on multiplicity, reoccurrence rate, and association with urothelial carcinoma. From 2005 to 2011, 14 cases of inverted papilloma of the bladder were diagnosed at our hospital. Clinical features of 14 cases were summarized. These patients ranged in age from 25 to 81 years (mean, 61 years). The most frequently occurring symptom was gross hematuria. Eleven bladder tumors arose from the trigone or near the bladder neck. One case was associated wi

The inverted papilloma is a unilateral sinonasal benign tumor which is characterized by aggressive local invasion, high recurrence rate, and transformation into malignancy. The etiology of inverted papilloma is still unknown. Possible causes include allergy, chronic sinusitis, occupational exposure to dusts and aerosols, tobacco, and viral infections. Treatment is complete surgical excision and close postoperative follow-up is necessary. Here we report a case of inverted papilloma arising from the hard palate with malignant transformation in a 41-year-old female. Clinical and histological feat

BACKGROUND: Inverted papillomas are primarily benign neoplasms that occur in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Many aspects of sinonasal inverted papillomas are still controversial and active fields of research. Inverted papillomas generate considerable interest because they are locally aggressive, have a propensity to recur and are associated with malignancy. However, neither the etiology and pathogenesis of these tumors nor the putative role as a precursor to carcinoma and the factors responsible for associated malignancy have been clarified. Whether carcinomas in inverted papillomas a

OBJECTIVE: To introduce the experience of management of inverted papilloma in frontal sinus in hospital.
METHODS: Six patients with inverted papilloma in frontal sinus treated between 1999 and 2006 were reported, with special emphasis on the clinical symptoms, surgical technique and prognosis.
RESULTS: Among 6 patients with frontal sinus involvement, there were 5 males and 1 female, aged between 24 and 66 years. All 6 patients were managed with endoscopic resection and additional open approach (glabellar nasal keyhole approach). Follow-up ranged from 2 -8 years. Five patients treated with th

Inverted papilloma of the upper urinary tract is a rare tumor and generally considered to be a benign. We present two cases of benign ureteral inverted papilloma. They were discovered after to study a upper urinary infection and a gross hematuria respectively. Both cases appear to be associated with asynchronous and synchronous bladder carcinoma, so it is very important a strict follow-up.

Clinical studies were conducted on 9 cases of inverted papilloma of the urinary bladder which were transurethrally resected between August, 1987 and July, 1995 at our hospital, in males between 29 and 81 years of age (mean:58.3). Six of the 9 inverted papillomas were localized at the bladder neck and 3 in the trigone. Cystoscopic examinations revealed that inverted papillomas were divided into two types, one with a thick and short stalk with a smooth surface and the other with a thin and long stalk with/without a partial papillary surface. The majority of the former was located in the trigone

Three patients with inverted papilloma of the ureter are described. A range of histological features was seen, including one showing malignant change. This condition, which is probably more common than previously thought, can be successfully treated by conservative surgery and close follow-up.

Inverted papilloma is a benign, neoplastic condition of the sinusonasal cavity, independent from other polypoid lesions of the same area. Our case, presented below is, we believe, unique in that it lends credit to the possible multicentric origin of the disease; which started in the right nasal fossa, followed by the left and then the right tympanic cavities in that order.

Four cases of inverted papilloma in the upper urinary tract are reported-three were located in the ureter and one in the renal pelvis. Clinical and pathological findings are described. In two cases the patients had a history of transitional cell carcinoma; while in one case, inverted papilloma was found in the same lesion as transitional cell carcinoma. The question of malignant transformation of inverted papilloma is discussed. It is concluded that inverted papilloma is a benign tumor with a very low frequency of recurrence, but regular follow-up is advised.

RATIONALE: Sinonasal tumours are rare occurrences accounting for 3-4% of tumours (benign/malignant/co-existing) in the head-and-neck region, making it difficult to render an absolute diagnosis and treatment, thereof keeping in mind the tumour presentation and quality of life of the patient.
PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient reported with complaints of swelling over the right side of the face associated with recent onset of pain in the same region.
DIAGNOSIS: Upon clinical, radiographic and histopathological examination, it was diagnosed as right Sinonasal inverted papilloma (SNIP).

OBJECTIVE: The extent of the surgery required when sinonasal inverted papilloma (IP) originates in the maxillary sinus is still the subject of debate. The principal aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of exclusive endoscopic removal or when combined with a limited vestibular anterior antrostomy of the maxillary IP.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was carried out of 64 patients with IP treated in our university tertiary referral center from 1993-2007. Endoscopic removal of the IP was done for all patients, either exclusively or combined with an open approach. All patients were foll

Inverted papillomas are benign epithelial tumors usually arising from the mucous membrane of the sinonasal cavity and the urinary tract. Similar tumors of the conjunctiva are much rarer. We describe a case of juxtalimbal inverted papilloma in an 11-year-old boy who presented with a pigmented lesion that simulated a conjunctival nevus. Excisional biopsy established the diagnosis of inverted papilloma. The patient was carefully followed for 2 years, because the tumor's behavior in the conjunctiva is unknown. There was no recurrence of the lesion.
