Over the past few decades, epidemiology and natural history studies have led to improved understanding of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and to promising prevention strategies. HPV infection is the cause of anogenital warts and cervical cancer, as well as a proportion of other anogenital and head and neck cancers. Data from clinical trials have resulted in recommendations that support the use of an HPV test in the context of cervical cancer screening and management. Prophylactic HPV vaccine trials have demonstrated high efficacy, and an HPV vaccine that prevents cervical cancer precursor

Vaccines for preventing human papillomavirus (HPV) infection are far along in clinical development and testing, and hold great promise for reducing HPV infections and HPV-associated disease. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States, affecting an estimated 75% of the U.S. population. HPV infection is highly prevalent in sexually active adolescents and young adults. Sexual activity is the most important risk factor for infection, with 64% to 82% of sexually active adolescent girls testing positive for HPV. Clinical manifestations of HPV infection include genital

Anogenital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that typically follows a self-limiting transient course for both sexes. The HPV incidences and prevalences vary greatly, because they reflect the sexual activity of the individuals studied and of the population they are in contact with. Higher prevalences are seen in young, sexually active groups and in high-risk areas for cervical and penile cancer, e.g. in Colombia. There has also been an increasing trend with time in Western Europe, paralleling the spread of other STDs and changes in sexual behavior. Pen

PURPOSE: Emerging research indicates that viral infections may contribute to the development of certain vestibular disorders. This study aimed to explore the association of peripheral vestibular disorders (PVDs) with human papillomavirus (HPV) using a comprehensive population-based dataset from Taiwan's Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2010.
METHODS: We examined a cohort comprising 94,215 patients with a new diagnosis of PVDs and 471,075 propensity-score matched controls, utilizing propensity score matching. Multiple logistic regressions were carried out to evaluate the potential link b

Infection with human papillomavirus (HPV) is recognized as one of the major causes of infection-related cancer worldwide, as well as the causal factor in other diseases. Strong evidence for a causal etiology with HPV has been stated by the International Agency for Research on Cancer for cancers of the cervix uteri, penis, vulva, vagina, anus and oropharynx (including base of the tongue and tonsils). Of the estimated 12.7 million new cancers occurring in 2008 worldwide, 4.8% were attributable to HPV infection, with substantially higher incidence and mortality rates seen in developing versus dev

BACKGROUND: No studies have examined human papillomavirus (HPV) infections among couples early in their sexual relationships when transmission is most likely. Our objective was to describe the distribution of HPV infections among recently formed couples, using the partnership as the unit of analysis.
METHODS: Women aged 18-24 years attending a university or junior college in Montreal enrolled in a longitudinal study with their new male partners. Self-collected vaginal swabs and clinician-collected swabs from the penis and scrotum were tested for 36 HPV genotypes. Participants self-reported se

PURPOSE: The link between human papillomavirus (HPV) infections and salivary gland cancer is still a subject of ongoing debate. This study aimed to explore the association between HPV infections and salivary gland cancer in a Taiwanese cohort. We hypothesize that HPV infection is associated with an increased risk of developing salivary gland cancer.
METHODS: This case-control study included 416 individuals aged ≥ 20 years who had received their first diagnosis of salivary gland cancer as cases, and 2080 propensity-score-matched controls. We performed multivariate logistic regressions to evalu

Currently available prophylactic vaccines have no therapeutic efficacy for preexisting human papillomavirus (HPVs) infections, do not target all oncogenic HPVs and are insufficient to eliminate the burden of HPV induced cancer. We aim to develop an alternative HPV vaccine which is broadly effective and capable of clearing preexisting infection. In an initial attempt to develop a broadly reactive therapeutic vaccine, we designed a putative papillomavirus (PV) ancestor antigen (circulating sequence derived antigenic sequences E1E2-CDSE1E2) based on the conserved E1 and E2 protein sequences from

The relationship between severe-grade cervical lesions and clusters of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes in a taxonomic classification was surveyed in 232 women with previous abnormal cytology. HPV co-infections were clustered according to phylogenetic criteria. Multiple infections were detected in 22.0% of the entire sample. Clade A10 (represented by HPV-6 and HPV-11) appeared more frequently in multiple infections than clade A9, which was represented by five of the most common high-risk types, including HPV-16. Although HPV-16 was the most frequent genotype, it was not more prevalent in m

411 women who had dysplasia, selected from an ambulatory group as well as 240 women from a random control group were examined, by using cervical smears, which were initially diagnosed as human papilloma viruses-DNA (HPV-DNA) of the type 6/11, or 16/18, or 31/33/35. This was achieved by the in-situ nucleic acid hybridisation technique. The results of the HPV-DNA typing were tabulated with the cytological diagnosis (Munich Papanicolaou (Pap.) group-classification). The control group corresponding to Pap.Gr. I, and was HPV-DNA positive in 6 (2.5%) of the 240 cases. The group of 180 patients with

Three major classes of interferons have been identified (alpha, beta, and gamma). All three have been tested in clinical trials in condylomata acuminata, or genital warts, with positive results. Administration by topical, intralesional, intramuscular, and subcutaneous routes results in regression of human papillomavirus genital disease. Significant reduction in measurable lesions occurs in some patients within days of initiation of therapy. Responses appear to be both time and dose dependent. Although disease resolution is highly variable from patient to patient, approximately 75 to 80 percent

Forty-five women with a confirmed genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and their regular male sexual partners were examined. The diagnosis of the women was based on the colposcopic examination with cytological and histological samples. The men were studied by using a similar microscopic technique. Penisscopic and histological examinations showed that 22 out of the 45 men had genital HPV infection although only 7 men showed visible condylomatous warts. In addition, nine men had clinical lesions highly suggestive to HPV infection in penisscopy but they had unspecific histological samples

Although human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are common in HIV-infected adults, little is known about children. Our objective was to examine the prevalence of and risks for HPV of the oral mucosal and external genital areas in nonsexually active (NSA) perinatally (P) HIV+ children and compare with HIV-exposed but uninfected (HEU) children. A convenience sample attending a pediatric clinic were enrolled. Samples for HPV were obtained from the oral and anogenital areas and tested for one of 37 HPV types. The mean age of the 48 PHIV+ children was 14.3±3.9 years vs. 6.2±4.8 for the 52 HEU (p<0.0
