Studies that define natural responses to bacterial sepsis assumed new relevance after the lethal bioterrorist attacks with Bacillus anthracis (anthrax), a spore-forming, toxigenic gram-positive bacillus. Considerable effort has focused on identifying adjunctive therapeutics and vaccines to prevent future deaths, but translation of promising compounds into the clinical setting necessitates an animal model that recapitulates responses observed in humans. Here we describe a nonhuman primate (Papio c. cynocephalus) model of B. anthracis infection using infusion of toxigenic B. anthracis Sterne 34F

Cell and neuron densities vary across the cortical sheet in a predictable manner across different primate species (Collins et al., 2010b). Primary motor cortex, M1, is characterized by lower neuron densities relative to other cortical areas. M1 contains a motor representation map of contralateral body parts from tail to tongue in a mediolateral sequence. Different functional movement representations within M1 likely require specialized microcircuitry for control of different body parts, and these differences in circuitry may be reflected by variation in cell and neuron densities. Here we deter

In immature wild savannah baboons (Papio cynocephalus), we observed symptoms consistent with copper (Cu) deficiency and, more specifically, with a disorder referred to as white monkey syndrome (WMS) in laboratory primates. The objectives of this study were to characterize this pathology, and test three hypotheses that (1) Cu deficiency may have been induced by zinc (Zn) toxicity, (2) it may have been induced by molybdenum (Mo) toxicity, and (3) cumulative rainfall during the perinatal period and particularly during gestation is an ecological factor distinguishing infants afflicted with WMS fro

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Spontaneous viral encephalitis is rare in the baboon; yet, during a 13-month period (1993-1994), eight juvenile baboons (Papio cynocephalus spp.) developed acute, progressive nonsuppurative meningoencephalomyelitis caused by an unknown agent. Clinical signs of disease included disorientation and truncal ataxia that rapidly progressed to hemiparesis or paraparesis. Clinicopathologic findings were not remarkable and appreciable gross lesions were not seen at necropsy. Microscopic examination revealed CNS lesions that were characterized by lymphoplasmacytic perivascular cu

In order to study the microanatomy of the lateral sellar compartment (cavernous sinus) medial wall, serial histological sections of human fetuses and adults, as well as dissections under operative microscope, were performed. The results were compared to high resolution Magnetic Resonance Images in human, to microdissections and to serial histological sections in adult nonhuman primates (Papio Cynocephalus anubis). We were able to show that the sellar compartment and both lateral sellar osteodural compartments are not separated from each other by a dural wall, but by a more or less dense, inter

Despite many studies of the 'cavernous sinus' lateral wall, the anatomy of this area remains controversial. We performed a comparative microanatomical and histoarchitectural study in 14 humans and in 10 nonhuman primates (Papio cynocephalus anubis). Venous channels and cranial nerves were embedded in the 'interperiosteodural space'. The dura propria of the lateral wall could be removed without entering the venous compartment. The oculomotor and trochlear nerves were accompanied by an arachnoidal and dural sheath. The oculomotor nerve sheath stopped under the anterior clinoid process in baboons

BACKGROUND: The baboons (Papio cynocephalus) have similarities with human placentation and fetal development. Fetal blood sampling allows investigators to assess fetal condition at a specific point in gestation as well as transplacental transfer of medications. Unfortunately, assessing fetal status during gestation has been difficult and fetal instrumentation associated with high rate of pregnancy loss. Our objectives are to describe the technique of ultrasound guided cordocentesis (UGC) in baboons, report post-procedural outcomes, and review existing publications.
METHODS: This is a procedur

Social learning, information transmission and culture play vital roles in the lives of social animals, influencing their survival, reproduction and ability to adapt to changing environments. However, the effect of anthropogenic disturbances on these processes is poorly understood in free-living animals. To investigate the impact of anthropogenic disturbance on social learning and information transmission, we simulated individual removal from contact networks derived from long-term behavioural datasets. We simulate the effects of individual removal on network efficiency and social learning for

The Vandenbergh effect, or male-mediated maturation, occurs when females reach sexual maturation upon exposure to a novel male. Male-mediated maturation is found across mammals, including in geladas, Theropithecus gelada, where it may be an adaptive counterstrategy to infanticide that follows the immigration of a new male; maturing after male immigration maximizes a female's chances of weaning her first offspring before the next infanticidal male immigrates (the 'optimal timing hypothesis'). Alternatively, the nonadaptive 'Bruce effect by-product hypothesis' posits that male-mediated maturatio

BACKGROUND: Conductive anaesthesia of the nerves around the head is one of the methods of intraoperative pain relief (under deep anaesthesia but before proceeding with the procedure). Performing this procedure on primates is especially challenging for the veterinarian, due to their cranial anatomy and topography, which has more in common with the human skull than with the skulls of other animals. Knowledge of key bony structures, including cranial foramina, is essential for effective anaesthesia of the cranial nerves.
RESULTS: In this study, the differences in the topography of the cranial fo

Viruses can be transmitted from animals to humans (and vice versa) and across animal species. As such, host-virus interactions and transmission have attracted considerable attention. Non-human primates (NHPs), our closest evolutionary relatives, are susceptible to human viruses and certain pathogens are known to circulate between humans and NHPs. Here, we generated global statistics on VI-NHPs based on a literature search and public data mining. In total, 140 NHP species from 12 families are reported to be infected by 186 DNA and RNA virus species, 68.8% of which are also found in humans, indi

Old World monkeys (OWM), simians inhabiting Africa and Asia, are currently affected by at least four infectious retroviruses, namely, simian foamy virus (SFV), simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), simian T-lymphotropic virus (STLV), and simian type D retrovirus (SRV). OWM also show chromosomal evidence of having been infected in the past with four more retroviral species, baboon endogenous virus (BaEV), Papio cynocephalus endogenous virus (PcEV), simian endogenous retrovirus (SERV), and Rhesus endogenous retrovirus-K (RhERV-K/SERV-K1). For some of the viruses, transmission to other primates st

Repeated censuses of a population of yellow baboons (Papio cynocephalus) in Amboseli National Park, Kenya, revealed a decrease from over 2,500 animals in 1963-1964 to 123 individuals in 1979, or from a density of about 73 to 1.8 baboons per km2 over a 15-year period. Median group size decreased from 43 in 1964 to 27 in 1979. The largest and smallest groups declined the most; groups near the median have maintained fairly stable size and age distributions. The population seemed to have stabilized by 1983 at approximately 150 animals in six groups (median group size 28; density 2.2/km2). Although

Human disturbance is an ongoing threat to many wildlife species, manifesting as habitat destruction, resource overuse, or increased disease exposure, among others. With increasing human: non-human primate (NHP) encounters, NHPs are increasingly susceptible to human-introduced diseases, including those with parasitic origins. As such, epidemiology of parasitic disease is becoming an important consideration for NHP conservation strategies. To investigate the relationship between parasite infections and human disturbance we studied yellow baboons (Papio cynocephalus) living outside of national pa

A housing and tether system was designed to permit sampling of body fluids, chronic monitoring of physiologic parameters (e.g. blood pressure, heart rate), performance of species typical behavioral interactions (aggression, affiliation, reproduction, etc), physical exercise (work on a motorized treadmill), assessment of water and diet consumption, as well as feces and urine collection. The system provided primates with the opportunity to engage in species typical social behavior and thereby minimized conditions which have been identified as contributing to the development of abnormal behaviors

Dental eruption schedules previously used to age wild baboons have in the past derived from studies of captive animals housed under standard conditions and fed standard laboratory diets. This paper reports for the first time eruption schedules derived from wild baboons, the yellow baboons (Papio hamadryas cynocephalus) of Mikumi National Park, Tanzania, and compares these schedules with those of other baboon subspecies inhabiting both similar and dissimilar environments. Eighteen males and twelve females from the Viramba groups, ranging in age from 21 to 103 months, were trapped, and dental im

Many primates exhibit female philopatry and live in stable, female-bonded social groups. Permanent group fusions are rarely documented in these populations. We present a case study on a fusion of two social groups from a hybrid population of baboons (Papio cynocephalus x P. anubis) living in the Amboseli basin of Kenya. The fusion occurred following a period of increased human-induced mortality in one of the two social groups. After the fusion, females from the smaller group became the lowest ranking. We compared female behavior in the months following the fusion to the behavior of females in

In Kenya, Leishmania major is responsible for human cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Natural infection with L. major of a vervet monkey and experimental susceptibility of some nonhuman primates (NHPs) from Kenya has been established. However, there has been no comprehensive study of the prevalence of zoonotic CL in Kenya. And also, no investigation has been done to assess whether NHPs could be potential reservoir hosts of L. major even when the involvement of reservoir animals is obligatory in transmission of this parasite. To achieve this, wild caught Chlorocebus aethiops (Vervet monkeys n=213),

A primate lymphotropic lentivirus was isolated on the human T-cell line HuT 78 after cocultivation of a lymph node from a pig-tailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) that had died with malignant lymphoma. This isolate, originally designated M. nemestrina immunodeficiency virus (MnIV) and now classified as simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV/Mne), was inoculated intravenously into three juvenile rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta), three juvenile pig-tailed macaques (M. nemestrina), and two juvenile baboons (Papio cynocephalus). All six macaques became viremic by 3 weeks after inoculation, whereas neithe

Clinically normal baboons (Papio cynocephalus anubis [Kingfjdon, 1971]) were used in an experiment which (1) examined growth in 48 subjects randomly assigned to three diet treatments (LC = low calorie; MC = medium calorie; HC = high calorie); (2) tested the hypothesis that different amounts of caloric availability during the neonatal period (birth to 16 weeks) had a significant effect on growth and development as measured by weight, crown-rump length, and triceps circumference in the subsequent infant, juvenile, and adolescent periods; (3) evaluated the rate of growth in these subjects; and (4
