rCBF differences between panic disorder patients and control subjects during anticipatory anxiety and rest.

BACKGROUND: Our goal was to identify brain structures involved in anticipatory anxiety in panic disorder (PD) patients compared to control subjects. METHODS: Seventeen PD patients and 21 healthy control subjects were studied with H(2)(15)O positron emission tomography scan, before and after a pentagastrin challenge. RESULTS: During anticipatory anxiety we found hypoactivity in the precentral gyrus, the inferior frontal gyrus, the right amygdala, and the anterior insula in PD patients compared to control subjects. Hyperactivity in patients compared to control subjects was observed in the para

fMRI activity in the medial temporal lobe during recognition memory as a function of study-test interval.

The phenomenon of temporally graded retrograde amnesia (loss of information acquired before the onset of amnesia) suggests that the hippocampus, and possibly other medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures, have a time-limited role in memory. In three experiments, we made a first attempt to use fMRI to assess activity in the hippocampal region (the CA fields of the hippocampus, the dentate gyrus, and the subiculum) and the adjacent parahippocampal gyrus (parahippocampal, entorhinal, and perirhinal cortices) during recognition memory testing as a function of study-test interval. Experiment 1 (n = 5

Altered whole-brain gray matter volume in high myopia patients: a voxel-based morphometry study.

High myopia (HM) was associated with impaired long-distance vision. Previous neuroimaging studies showed that abnormal visual experience leads to dysfunction in brain activity in HM even corrected. However, whether alterations in brain structure occur in HM remains unknown. In this study, we analyzed the difference in the whole-brain gray matter volume (GMV) and white matter volume between HM patients and healthy controls (HCs) using a voxel-based morphology method. A total of 82 HM patients (52 men and 30 women) and 58 HCs (28 men and 30 women), matched closely in terms of age and education,

Occipital interhemispheric approach without excision of tentorium for the tumor in the medial temporal region: technical note.

BACKGROUND: An occipital interhemispheric approach for the lesions in the middle part of the medial temporal region has been reported. However, this approach usually requires the excision of the tentorium to provide satisfactory exposure. In this case, we used this approach without the excision of the tentorium to remove the parahippocampal gyrus tumor, which was located superolateral to tentorial edge in the middle part of the medial temporal region. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 22-year-old man who had seizures for 3 years presented with a tumor in the right parahippocampal gyrus. The tumor was succe

Cortical thinning in temporo-parietal junction (TPJ) in non-affective first-episode of psychosis patients with persistent negative symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Negative symptoms represent an unmet therapeutic need in many patients with schizophrenia. In an extension to our previous voxel-based morphometry findings, we employed a more specific, vertex-based approach to explore cortical thinning in relation to persistent negative symptoms (PNS) in non-affective first-episode of psychosis (FEP) patients to advance our understanding of the pathophysiology of primary negative symptoms. METHODS: This study included 62 non-affective FEP patients and 60 non-clinical controls; 16 patients were identified with PNS (i.e., at least 1 primary negativ

The differences in neural network activity between methamphetamine abusers and healthy subjects performing an emotion-matching task: functional MRI study.

Methamphetamine (MA) abusers commonly exhibit socially problematic behaviors, such as diminished empathy, decreased emotional regulation and interpersonal violence, which may be attributable to alterations in emotional experience. However, few studies have used functional MRI to examine directly the emotional experience of threatening or fearful non-face images in MA abusers. In this study, we investigated possible differences in neural correlates of negative emotional experiences between abstinent MA abusers and healthy subjects using complex visual scenes depicting fear or threat derived fro

The neural basis of olfactory function and its relationship with anhedonia in individuals with schizotypy: An exploratory study.

Previous studies have established a linkage between olfactory deficits and negative symptoms in schizophrenia. However, it is not known whether olfactory function is associated with hedonic traits in individuals with schizotypy. Seventeen individuals with schizotypy and 18 age- and sex-matched controls participated in this study. Hedonic traits were assessed with the Chapman Scales for Physical and Social Anhedonia (CSAS and CPAS). Olfactory function was assessed with the Sniffin' Stick Test (olfactory threshold, odour discrimination and odour identification). All participants undertook a stru

Hierarchical integrated processing of reward-related regions in obese males: A graph-theoretical-based study.

Abnormal activities in reward-related regions are associated with overeating or obesity. Preliminary studies have shown that changes in neural activity in obesity include not only regional reward regions abnormalities but also impairments in the communication between reward-related regions and multiple functional areas. A recent study has shown that the transitions between different neural networks are nonrandom and hierarchical, and that activation of particular brain networks is more likely to occur after other brain networks. The aims of this study were to investigate the key nodes of rewar

Construction and validation of a brain magnetic resonance imaging template for normal older Koreans.

BACKGROUND: Spatial normalization to a standardized brain template is a crucial step in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. Brain templates made from sufficient sample size have low brain variability, improving the accuracy of spatial normalization. Using population-specific template improves accuracy of spatial normalization because brain morphology varies according to ethnicity and age. METHODS: We constructed a brain template of normal Korean elderly (KNE200) using MRI scans 100 male and 100 female aged over 60 years old with normal cognition. We compared the deformation after spatia

Editorial: Brain Mediators of the Cannabis-Prodromal Psychosis Connection.

The article by Yu and Jia et al.1 in this issue of the Journal investigates the role of a subregion of the parahippocampal gyrus called the right uncus ("hook") as a possible mediator of the known increase of psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) due to the consumption of cannabinoids (ie, cannabis).2 The authors chose a pattern of plausible inference worthy of pursuit. Cannabis continues to be one of the most widely used drugs globally, only behind alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco; 188 million people used cannabis worldwide in 2017.3 In January 2019, the WHO's Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (E

Pathological changes in the parahippocampal region in select non-Alzheimer's dementias.

The transentorhinal and entorhinal regions of the human brain extend over the ambient gyrus and anterior portions of the parahippocampal gyrus. They are important components of the limbic loop which receives its major afferents from the neocortical sensory association areas and generates powerful efferent projections both directly and via intermediary relay stations to the prefrontal cortex. The bilateral structural preservation of limbic loop components is a prerequisite for the maintenance of intact memory functions. In progressive neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, arg

Altered intrinsic brain activity in patients with CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy.

CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy is an adult-onset white matter disease with high disability and mortality, while little is known about its pathogenesis. This study introduced amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging(rsfMRI) to compare the spontaneous brain activities of patients and healthy controls, aiming to enhance our understanding of the disease. RsfMRI was performed on 16 patients and 23 healthy controls, and preprocessed for calculation of ALFF and ReHo. Permutation tests with threshold

Causal effects of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease on cerebral cortical structure: a Mendelian randomization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have highlighted changes in the cerebral cortical structure and cognitive function among nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients. However, the impact of NAFLD on cerebral cortical structure and specific affected brain regions remains unclear. Therefore, we aimed to explore the potential causal relationship between NAFLD and cerebral cortical structure. METHODS: We conducted a Mendelian randomization (MR) study using genetic predictors of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), NAFLD, and percent liver fat (PLF) and combined them with genome-wide association stud

Less is more: Parahippocampal resection or endoscopic assistance in ambient cistern surgery? Qualitative and quantitative assessment of subtemporal approach.

The ambient cistern is an arachnoid complex that extends from the crural cistern to lateral border of cerebral colliculi. The subtemporal approach has been recognized as the best access to reach pathologies in the ambient cistern, however many disadvantages exist. The present work aims to analyze quantitatively the area of exposure provided by the subtemporal access. The objective is to evaluate if there are advantages of using the neuroendoscope in conventional subtemporal access when compared to the subtemporal access with resection of the parahippocampal gyrus. A subtemporal approach was pe

An fMRI study of emotional face encoding in youth at risk for bipolar disorder.

Face memory deficits may be a bipolar disorder (BD) endophenotype. BD (n=27) and unaffected youth at risk (n=13) exhibited middle frontal gyrus hypoactivation during successful vs. unsuccessful encoding. Parahippocampal gyrus dysfunction was found in BD and at-risk youth (vs. low-risk, n=37). Middle occipital gyrus hypoactivation was only present in BD.
